1 April 6, th Sunday of Lent Holy Name of Mary Parish Serving San Dimas and La Verne and surrounding communities Staffed by the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Dear Lord, We ask You to bless us, Your holy people. Open our hearts to Your call to be the ears, eyes, and voice of children and young people everywhere. Give us the vision and grace needed to fulfill the special commitments that each of us has made to making our homes, churches, schools, communities and world a safer place for all God s children. Amen
2 Page 2 Each April the Conference of Bishops asks the Church in the United States to focus our attention to the protection of children. I am happy to have this opportunity to update you on just what that means here at Holy Name of Mary. In 2002, in response to the abuse crisis that rocked the American Church, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) adopted the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. In this document, which was revised in 2011, the bishops committed to creating a safe environment within the Church for our children and youth. In response to the Charter the Archdiocese of Los Angeles established the Office of Safeguard the Children in order to provide support, education, training and resources to help prevent child sexual abuse and to address children's safety in our parishes, schools, homes and communities. Additionally, each parish was mandated by the Archdiocese to form a Safeguard the Children Committee. The members of the Holy Name of Mary Safeguard the Children Committee are committed to the safety of all children and youth of the parish. The joyful display that graces our lawn this weekend was created by and is a reminder of the many children of our school and faith formation programs who use these facilities each day. We work diligently in our own committee and with the recently formed Safety Committee to ensure that Holy Name of Mary Parish and School is a safe environment for all. The Safeguard the Children Committee is charged with ensuring that the parish complies with all of the policies and procedures established by both the USCCB and the Archdiocesan Office of Safeguard the Children. I am happy to report that we have been audited by both the USCCB and the Archdiocese and no exceptions were found. A very important mandate from the Office of Safeguard the Children is that all adults who work with young people, whether paid staff or volunteers, attend a VIRTUS Protecting God s Children Workshop. The VIRTUS program trains adults to recognize the signs of abuse and to respond to suspicions of abuse in an appropriate manner. Simply stated, we are asked to become the eyes, ears and mouth of our children and vulnerable adults. While the program is required only of those working with children here at the parish, the reality is that the protection of our precious children is the responsibility of the entire community. As a committee we invite all adults in the parish who are important in the life of a child to consider attending a VIRTUS Workshop. Together we can make the parish and the community a safer place for all children. For more information about the Safeguard the Children program I encourage you to visit our page on the parish website ( Thoughts or questions can also be directed to hnmsafeguard@gmail.com.

4 Page 4 From the desk of your humble servant. Leadership Summit Last Saturday, ninety-seven members of the parish leadership team gathered to set a foundation for our 5- year strategic plan. This effort will incorporate the excellent work completed in 2011 and take into consideration the benefits of our new parish hall. Over the next several months parish staff and the Pastoral Council will refine this effort and report the outcome to you next September, if not sooner. Our first task will be to sort through the recommendations that came from Saturday s discussion, and then refine that to provide clear focus. After that will come priorities and goal statements. With the sincerest of intention, I ask you all to pray to the Holy Spirit to guide us as we develop our plan; there isn t much benefit to hitting the target if it isn t the right target to begin with. So, let s pray that the plan we produce is the plan blessed by God. A big Thank You goes out to all of you wonderful people who gave up your Saturday to participate in our Leadership Summit! Your energy and enthusiasm were encouraging! We met with the Archdiocese last week and we now have permission to go out to bid based on our current funding level and cost estimates. We will be sending out requests for quote to seven approved contractors within the week. The bids will be due May 15. If all goes well and the bids come in at or below budget, we will begin construction this summer. Our Hall for All will be begin to RISE! We still need your support. The Archdiocese discounts outstanding pledges 20% which for us is over $200,000. They also add the interest on our loan $53,000. We agreed to lower the cost of the project an equal amount in order to go forward at this time. We can t afford to wait construction costs will go up and we need the Hall now! We think some bids will come in below budget, but we can t count on it. If we raise an additional $300,000 by May 30th, we can build the Hall as it is currently designed. So, if you haven t made a pledge, please join the 1,600 parishioners whose generosity has gotten us to this important milestone. Please use a pledge card you can get one under the poster in the narthex. Life Nights: All high age teenagers are invited to join us for Life Night every Sunday after the 5:00pm Life Teen Mass. Chowchilla Family Express Palm Sunday morning at 4:00 AM the Chowchilla Family Express Bus will again leave our parking lot and drive to Montebello and pick up more passengers. From there, the bus will travel five hours to the woman s prison facilities in Chowchilla, CA. This program affords incarcerated women an opportunity to visit with their children and extended families. These visits enable these women to be engaged in the lives of their children and families. This program was established by the State of California because, unlike male inmates, most incarcerated women do not receive visits from their children or their families As we have done in the past, we will offer each passenger: early morning hospitality, a snack sack, and a McDonalds gift card to be used at a dinner stop in Bakersfield on the return trip. There will also be a stuffed animal given to each child on the return trip. Thanks to the wonderful generosity of our Holy Name of Mary Family we have adequate gift cards, stuffed animals and money to purchase snack sacks for this trip. The Chowchilla Family Express bus is operated under contract by the Center For Restorative Justice Works (CRJW) and funded by the State of California. The contract for this service expires on 30 June At this point we do not know whether or not there will be a renewal contract for this service. If this bus service is refunded, we will work with the CRJW staff to assure a bus leaves HNM at least once a quarter. Please keep the needs of the children, the families and the mothers in your prayers. dn. marv When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you? (Mt 25) To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. -Thomas Campbell Fundraising: New Policy, New Procedure If you re planning a fundraising event, please complete and submit the on-line form (see our parish website). Since November, all fundraising events need to be coordinated and approved by the Charity Coordinating Committee. The purpose of this process is to prevent conflicting and competing events and to ensure that all those who seek donations on the premises are here legitimately.
