3 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS The Religious Education Program will be open from 9:30AM to 1:00PM Monday thru Wednesday during the summer. We will open Monday nights again on August 31 st. Please call for more information. We will be sending out information on when class starts with teacher information and a calendar this coming week. Classes start Saturday, September 12 th for grades K thru 4 th. Please register soon so that your child may be placed in a class. Please call our office if you do not receive this information. Lastly, we are in need of volunteers to help us teach a 5 th, 6 th and two 7 th grade classes. It would be ideal to have two teachers in a class. Please pray about it, talk to those who teach religion class. It is such a wonderful experience to be able to share and witness your faith to the future of our church. Lesson plans would be provided as well as classes to prepare you. Please call (845) for more information. Please continue praying for our students. We all need to pray for each other. FOOD PANTRY Next Sunday, August 30 th, is the last Sunday of the month of August, which is Loaves and Fishes Sunday for us at St. Peter s Church when our parish Food Pantry seeks help in providing food for those in our community who are hungry. There will a box in the rear of church to receive donations. Thank you for your generous support. MISSION APPEAL TODAY We welcome Brother John Blazo, a Maryknoll Missioner who will speak at the Masses today on behalf of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Maryknoll is the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America. Maryknoll s task is to bring God s Word to foreign lands. Maryknollers share the Gospel, not in word alone, but in practical and concrete actions by feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, giving shelter to the homeless and comforting the oppressed. DESPENSA DE ALIMENTOS Este domingo próximo, día 30º de agosto, es el último Domingo del mes de agosto, el cual es Domingo de Panes y Peces para nosotros aquí en la Iglesia San Pedro, que es cuando nuestra Despensa de Alimentos, busca ayuda para proveer alimentos para aquellos en nuestra comunidad que pasan hambre. Habrá una caja en el vestíbulo de la iglesia para recibir sus donaciones. Gracias por su apoyo generoso CAMPAÑA PARA LAS MISIONES Damos la bienvenida al Hermano John Blazo, un Misionero de la Orden de Maryknoll, quien nos hablará en las Misas de hoy en favor de la Sociedad de la Propagación de la Fe. Maryknoll es la Sociedad de las Misiones Extranjeras de la Iglesia Católica en Estados Unidos. El objetivo de Maryknoll es llevar la Palabra de Dios a tierras extranjeras. Los Misioneros de Maryknoll comparten el Evangelio, no solamente en la palabra, sino en acciones prácticas y concretas dando de comer al hambriento, vistiendo al desnudo, vivienda al que no tiene techo y consuelo a los oprimidos. 4 POPE FRANCIS ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME Authentic human development has a moral character. It presumes full respect for the human person, but it must also be concerned for the world around us and take into account the nature of each being and of its mutual connection in an ordered system.[8] Accordingly, our human ability to transform reality must proceed in line with God s original gift of all that is.[9] 6. My predecessor Benedict XVI likewise proposed eliminating the structural causes of the dysfunctions of the world economy and correcting models of growth which have proved incapable of ensuring respect for the environment.[10] He observed that the world cannot be analyzed by isolating only one of its aspects, since the book of nature is one and indivisible, and includes the environment, life, sexuality, the family, social relations, and so forth. It follows that the deterioration of nature is closely connected to the culture which shapes human coexistence.[11] Pope Benedict asked us to recognize that the natural environment has been gravely damaged by our irresponsible behavior. The social environment has also suffered damage. Both are ultimately due to the same evil: the notion that there are no indisputable truths to guide our lives, and hence human freedom is limitless. We have forgotten that man is not only a freedom which he creates for himself. Man does not create himself. He is spirit and will, but also nature.[12] With paternal concern, Benedict urged us to realize that creation is harmed where we ourselves have the final word, where everything is simply our property and we use it for ourselves alone. The misuse of creation begins when we no longer recognize any higher instance than ourselves, when we see nothing else but ourselves.[13] United by the same concern 7. These statements of the Popes echo the reflections of numerous scientists, philosophers, theologians and civic groups, all of which have enriched the Church s thinking on these questions. Outside the Catholic Church, other Churches and Christian communities and other religions as well have expressed deep concern and offered valuable reflections on issues which all of us find disturbing. To give just one striking example, I would mention the statements made by the beloved Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, with whom we share the hope of full ecclesial communion. 8. Patriarch Bartholomew has spoken in particular of the need for each of us to repent of the ways we have harmed the planet, for inasmuch as we all generate small ecological damage, we are called to acknowledge our contribution, smaller or greater, to the disfigurement and destruction of creation.[14] He has repeatedly stated this firmly and persuasively, challenging us to acknowledge our sins against creation: For human beings to destroy the biological diversity of God s creation; for human beings to degrade the integrity of the earth by causing changes in its climate, by stripping the earth of its natural forests or destroying its wetlands; for human beings to contaminate the earth s waters, its land, its air, and its life these are sins.[15] For to commit a crime against the natural world is a sin against ourselves and a sin against God.[16] PAPA FRANCISCO SOBRE EL CUIDADO DE LA CASA COMÚN Unidos por una misma preocupación El auténtico desarrollo humano posee un carácter moral y supone el pleno respeto a la persona humana, pero también debe prestar atención al mundo natural y «tener en cuenta la naturaleza de cada ser y su mutua conexión en un sistema ordenado»[8]. Por lo tanto, la capacidad de transformar la realidad que tiene el ser humano debe desarrollarse sobre la base de la donación originaria de las cosas por parte de Dios[9]. 6. Mi predecesor Benedicto XVI renovó la invitación a «eliminar las causas estructurales de las disfunciones de la economía mundial y corregir los modelos de crecimiento que parecen incapaces de garantizar el respeto del medio ambiente»[10]. Recordó que el mundo no puede ser analizado sólo aislando uno de sus aspectos, porque «el libro de la naturaleza es uno e indivisible», e incluye el ambiente, la vida, la sexualidad, la familia, las relaciones sociales, etc. Por consiguiente, «la degradación de la naturaleza está estrechamente unida a la cultura que modela la convivencia humana»[11]. El Papa Benedicto nos propuso reconocer que el ambiente natural está lleno de heridas producidas por nuestro comportamiento irresponsable. También el ambiente social tiene sus heridas. Pero todas ellas se deben en el fondo al mismo mal, es decir, a la idea de que no existen verdades indiscutibles que guíen nuestras vidas, por lo cual la libertad humana no tiene límites. Se olvida que «el hombre no es solamente una libertad que él se crea por sí solo. El hombre no se crea a sí mismo. Es espíritu y voluntad, pero también naturaleza»[12]. Con paternal preocupación, nos invitó a tomar conciencia de que la creación se ve perjudicada «donde nosotros mismos somos las últimas instancias, donde el conjunto es simplemente una propiedad nuestra y el consumo es sólo para nosotros mismos. El derroche de la creación comienza donde no reconocemos ya ninguna instancia por encima de nosotros, sino que sólo nos vemos a nosotros mismos»[13]. 7. Estos aportes de los Papas recogen la reflexión de innumerables científicos, filósofos, teólogos y organizaciones sociales que enriquecieron el pensamiento de la Iglesia sobre estas cuestiones. Pero no podemos ignorar que, también fuera de la Iglesia Católica, otras Iglesias y Comunidades cristianas como también otras religiones han desarrollado una amplia preocupación y una valiosa reflexión sobre estos temas que nos preocupan a todos. Para poner sólo un ejemplo destacable, quiero recoger brevemente parte del aporte del querido Patriarca Ecuménico Bartolomé, con el que compartimos la esperanza de la comunión eclesial plena. 8. El Patriarca Bartolomé se ha referido particularmente a la necesidad de que cada uno se arrepienta de sus propias maneras de dañar el planeta, porque, «en la medida en que todos generamos pequeños daños ecológicos», estamos llamados a reconocer «nuestra contribución pequeña o grande a la desfiguración y destrucción de la creación»[14]. Sobre este punto él se ha expresado repetidamente de una manera firme y estimulante, invitándonos a reconocer los pecados contra la creación: «Que los seres humanos destruyan la diversidad biológica en la creación divina; que los seres humanos degraden la integridad de la tierra y contribuyan al cambio climático, desnudando la tierra de sus bosques naturales o destruyendo sus zonas húmedas; que los seres humanos contaminen las aguas, el suelo, el aire. Todos estos son pecados»[15]. Porque «un crimen contra la naturaleza es un crimen contra nosotros mismos y un pecado contra Dios»[16] St. Peters s Church
