As you look at the Progress Reports, reflect on the accomplishments and make plans with your child on how they can reach their goals. During the holiday break, try to spend some quality time with your child discussing their future plans. Help them to implement short term achievable goals. Our children need to feel successful in order to achieve. Together, formulate a plan and monitor their progress. Please contact the school as well for assistance if you need to. We at Williamsburg Charter High School are committed to leading our children to graduate with a high school diploma and to be successful. We thank you for sending your children to our school. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry It is my deepest hope that you and your family were able to find joy and happiness during this holiday season. Around this time of year, many people are making resolutions or establishing goals. However, a goal without a plan is just a wish. This month, I encourage you to ask your student what his/her goals are and more importantly, what their plans are. Here are items that should be part of their plan for academic success: See teachers after school for Extra-Help- Most teachers are available from 3:45-4:15pm to offer extra-help, review course content, and listen. Complete and Submit All Assignments- Thursday January 14, 2016 will be the last day for students to submit late work for Quarter 2 (where applicable). Attend - Students taking Regents exams in January are highly encouraged to attend sessions. Sessions are held Mondays, Tuesdays,, and Fridays from 3:45-5:00pm and are available until January 22, Study for Exams- Finals begin on January 19, Students should be reviewing their notes, organizing their notebooks, reading over the holiday break, and studying with classmates. The school library is open during all lunch periods. Students must show ID to enter and must follow library protocols at all times. Pass Semester 1- Semester ending grades are calculated by averaging Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 grades. Students must have at least a 70 average at the end of the semester in order to earn credits for the course. If your child did not pass the first Quarter, he/she must earn at least an 85 in Quarter 2, in order to pass the semester and earn credit. Please encourage your child to speak to his/her teachers about their grades and what they can do to improve. Cuando revise los reportes de progreso, refleje sobre los logros y haga planes con su hijo sobre cómo pueden alcanzar sus metas. Las sesiones son los lunes, martes, jueves y viernes de 3:45-5:00pm hasta el 22 de enero del Estudia para sus exámenes Los exámenes finales comienzan el 19 de enero del Los estudiantes deben repasar sus notas, organizar sus cuadernos, leer durante sus vacaciones, y estudiar con sus compañeros de clase. La biblioteca en la escuela está abierta todos los periodos del almuerzo. Los estudiantes deben presentar identificación y seguir las reglas en todo momento. 3 January 2016 Dear Parents and Guardians, Message from Student Support Services Welcome back! I hope that the Holiday Season was full of joy for you and your loved ones. The New Year is a time that many of us look forward to, as it symbolizes a new beginning, a second chance and an opportunity to get things right. As we begin the second half of the academic school year, this is the perfect opportunity for our students to begin anew and to try to get it right, in particular for students who may not have performed as well as they had hoped in the first quarter. A great British educational writer by the name of William Edward Hickson wrote: If at first you don t succeed, try, try, try again. Although these words are few and simple, they remain very powerful and can serve as an inspiration for us all to do better by virtue of just TRYING. The school has recently begun a pilot program called WHY TRY for a significant number of our students who require a little extra motivation and encouragement not to give up but to keep trying, and in trying, we are confident that they will attain success. The program helps them to develop a personal Game Plan for success by taking them through a series of metaphors such as: The Motivation Formula, The Reality Ride, Tearing off Labels, Climbing Out, Jumping Hurdles, Desire, Time, Effort, just to list a few. We are very excited about the program as our goal at Williamsburg Charter High School is to ensure the success of every student by whatever means necessary. This year we have collectively committed ourselves to the idea that Failure is NOT an Option and to that end, we will keeping TRYING to find innovative and out of the box methodologies to reach our students. There is no charge to have your photo in the yearbook. Everyone will be photographed. Families may wish to take advantage of these highly professional color portraits offered in three photo packages and delivered to the school. Weather Advisory In the case of weather-related or other emergency closings, the WCHS will be closed if all NYC Department of Education (DOE) public schools are closed due to severe weather. Should WCHS be closed but other schools are open, information will be posted on NY1 and 1010WINS and you will be notified via auto-call when possible. Should you not have access to these systems or if you have questions, feel free to contact your child s Grade Director or your child s advisor.

4 Mensaje de Servicios de Apoyo Estudiantil Enero del 2016 Estimados padres y tutores, Bienvenido de vuelta! Espero que haya pasado una feliz temporada de festejos con sus seres queridos. El año nuevo es una temporada que muchos esperamos porque simboliza un nuevo comienzo, una segunda oportunidad y la oportunidad para hacer las cosas bien. Al comenzar la segunda mitad del año escolar , es la oportunidad perfecta para que nuestros estudiantes comiencen de nuevo y hagan las cosas bien en particular los estudiantes quienes no tuvieron el resultado que esperaban el primer trimestre. Un gran escritor educativo Inglés William Edward Hickson escribió: Si al principio no logras, trate y trate de intentarlo de nuevo. Aunque estas palabras son pocas y simples, son muy poderosas y sirven como inspiración para todos nosotros para hacer mejor tan solo con TRATAR. La escuela recientemente comenzó un nuevo programa llamado POR QUÉ TRATAR para ciertos estudiantes quienes necesitan más motivación y apoyo para que no se rindan y sigan tratando para que tengan éxito. El programa les ayuda desarrollar un plan de acción para tener éxito llevándolos por una serie de metáforas como: La Fórmula de la Motivación, El Paseo de la Realidad, Acabar con Caracterizaciones, Escaldar Hacia Fuera, Saltar Obstáculos, Deseo, Tiempo, Esfuerzo, para enumerar algunas. Estamos muy entusiasmados por este programa porque nuestra meta en la escuela Williamsburg Chárter es asegurar que todos nuestros estudiantes tengan éxito sea como sea. Este año estamos comprometidos a la idea que el fracaso NO es una opción y seguiremos tratando a encontrar metodologías innovadores y fuera de lo común para alcanzar a nuestros estudiantes.
