I want to make sure that you have all of the important dates so that you can keep yourself up to date on all of the upcoming events during this time. Upcoming events include: March 11 th - Half day of school for students, teacher planning day. Students will be released at 11:00am from school. This marks the end of the 3 rd quarter (WHOA!). March 5 th - Madison Bash. Come join us at Madison #1 for the 4 th annual Madison Bash! March 9 th - Heights Night with the Phoenix Suns at 7pm! Come help raise money for our school and cheer on the Phoenix Suns as they take on the New York Knicks. Heights will participate in the 50/50 raffle. We need raffle helpers that can sell tickets up to 3 rd quarter of the game. Any raffle helpers will receive a free entry ticket. All others who would like to join us can purchase tickets for $22 each. March 14 th 18 th : Spring Break. There will be no school for that week. The office will be closed as well. March 25 Spring Holiday. No School. April 6 th AzMERIT Writing Test- Third graders will be taking the AzMERIT Computer Based Test. April 8th: Spring Family Festival and a Movie Night: This is the PTO sponsored event join us as we celebrate and honor time with our personal family and our Heights family. We will also be having a Fun Run at the beginning of the night. Be there early and enjoy some fun exercise in one of the best locations in Phoenix. Please make plans to join us! April 11 th April 22 nd : AzMERIT Testing. This is the state and district testing week for all students in 3 rd -8 th grade. Third and fourth graders will be taking the AzMERIT Computer Based Test. This test is built on the state standards. States use standardized tests to measure whether students are meeting these standards. Please be sure your 3 rd and 4 th grade children are in attendance these weeks as our schedules are very limited. April 14 th : AIMS Science Test- Only Fourth graders will be take the AIMS science test. AIMS Science is a Standards Based Assessment that measures student proficiency of the Arizona Academic Content Standard in Science. April 25 th April 29 th and May 2 nd May 5 th - NWEA MAP testing. This is Madison s district wide assessment to measure student performance and growth. Students have been assessed in August and December, now in April they will have their final MAP assessment for the year. 4/25-4/29 is K-2 NWEA/MAP testing; 5/2-5/5 is 3 rd -4 th NWEA/MAP testing. 4 Information Regarding Homeless Students Students may be considered homeless if they are: In a shelter, motel vehicle, or campground On the street In an abandoned building, trailer or other inadequate accommodations Doubled up with friends or relatives because they cannot find or afford housing If children are homeless they have certain rights or protections under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act. These protections include the right to: Be enrolled immediately without birth certificates, immunizations or school records Attend school while the school arranges for the transfer of school and immunization records or any other required documents Enroll in school without giving a permanent address. Schools cannot delay enrollment. Continue in the school they attended before becoming homeless or the school of their attendance Receive transportation to and from the school they attended before becoming homeless or the school of their attendance, if requested. Public Notice for Destruction of Records The Madison Elementary School District retains student cumulative files for three years after the student s promotion or withdrawal from the district. Following a student s 8 th grade promotion, or when a withdrawn student turns 16 years old, permanent student records are archived to microfilm. Only the student s enrollment form, immunization records, last grade report, last standardized test results, and the withdrawal form are permanently archived, when applicable. All cumulative student records (except for permanent information stored on microfilm) will be destroyed three years after the school year of last attendance. Special Education records are retained for five years after the student is withdrawn or dismissed from Special Ed. Special Ed records are not microfilmed. Before any records are destroyed, parents have the right to review and obtain copies of their child s records. 5 SPRING BREAK CAMP registration is open! Camp will be held from Monday, March 14th through Friday, March 18th at Rose Lane Elementary School (1155 E. Rose Lane), and from 7 am to 6 pm. We have special activities planned for all age groups: Tuesday, the 15th - Preschool through 1st Grade - McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park Wednesday, the 16th - 2nd and 3rd Grades - Glow in the Dark Putt Putt at Glow Putt Thursday, the 17th - 4th through 8th Grades - Spring Training Game (Rockies vs. Angels) Friday, the 18th - All Grades Spirit Assembly (Comic Con) Registration will close and tuition will be due on Friday, March 4th - please register now to ensure your child's spot at camp. NEWS FROM EAGLES NEST CAFE National School Breakfast Week is March 7-11 We have a few activities going on to celebrate. All week we will be having Celebrity Servers at breakfast. Come see who will be serving up the most important meal of the day. Also we will be having nutrition trivia questions daily. The first correct answer in each grade level will win a prize. Be a winner and choose a healthy breakfast at school. Parents are always welcome to join their students for lunch or breakfast. Any concerns or questions feel free to stop in or give me a call.
