THE HISTORY OF NISSAN IN THE UK Nissan established a small trading company in It imported cars from Japan and sold them in the UK. The company only had 0.2% of the market in 1970 but it grew fast. By 1974 it was the UK s leading car importer. When the UK became a major extort market, Nissan decided to build an assembly plant. After a long search it found a suitable site in Tyne and Wear. Cars began rolling off the production line in At first, the plant had to limit production because of the JAMA import restriction agreement. But by 1988 UK companies supplied the majority of components and Nissan achieved the target of 60% local content. The plant was able to increase production. In 1991 Nissan set up a new distribution company and it started operations in January 1992 with a network of 150 dealers. By the end of the year there were 267. SALES ANALYSIS Sales began the year at 30,000 units in January and increased to 32,000 units in February. There was a rise to 38,000 in March due to the introduction of a new price discounting scheme. This was followed by a fall in April when the sales dropped to 36,000 units. Our competitors launched a rival product in the spring and this resulted in a dramatic fall to 25,000 in May. But we ran a summer advertising campaign and they stood at 33,000 in September. The dramatic rise to 45,000 in October resulted in the launch of our new autumn range. But then we experienced problems meeting demand and sales fell in November and remained at 39,000 in December. A SHORT HISTORY OF OLIVETTI The engineer Camilo Olivetti was 40 years old when he started the company in At his factory in Ivrea, he designed and produced the first Italian typewriter. Today the company headquarters are still in Ivrea, near Turin, but the company is much larger than it was in those days and there are offices all around the world. By 1930 there was a staff of 700 and the company produced 13,000 machines a year. Some went to customers in Italy, but Olivetti exported more typewriters to other countries. Camilo s son, Adriano, started working for the company in 1924 and later he became the boss. He introduced a standard speed for the production line, and he employed technology and design specialists. The company developed new and better typewriters and then calculators and accounting Lecto comprensión de Textos en Inglés Arri, Daniela 7

After Adriano died in 1960, the company had a period of financial problems. Other manufacturers, especially the Japanese, made faster progress in electronic technology than the Italian company. In 1978, Carlo de Benedetti became the new boss. Olivetti increased its distribution and service networks and made agreements with other companies to design and produce more sophisticated office equipment. Soon it became one of the world s leading companies in information technology and communications. There are now five independent companies in the Olivetti group- one for personal computers, one for other office equipment, one for systems and services and two specializing in telecommunications Cuáles de estas preguntas ha podido predecir a partir del título y lo visual? 12 Guía 12 Objetivos: Forma interrogativa del Simple Past Verbos modales: Can y Could Nuevos nexos lógicos Estrategias de lectura: lectura global y búsqueda de información específica. 1. THE HISTORY OF MONEY These days, money is high-tech. we have notes and coins specially made. We have credit cards. We are constantly using money or credit cards. Banks and stock exchanges can move millions at the touch of a button. Each country has its own individual culture. But although nations vary enormously, in some ways they are all the same. Each country has developed its own language, art and, of course its own money. But 1. How did 20 th century money developed? Ancient societies practiced trade. They exchanged goods in order to survive. What kind of money did they use? In the past, most societies used objects. Some were valuable because they were exotic and beautiful, others could be eaten or used. Some early forms of money were animal skins, beads, salt, feathers, etc. They were used to pay for goods and also to pay fines and debts. This practice had some disadvantages. For example, it was difficult to measure value accurately, to calculate different amounts and to keep objects for a long time. For these reasons societies began to use another kind of money This consisted of precious metals cut into small pieces and weighed. This is the beginning of metal money. Extraído de: Material de Lectocomprensión para Cs. Económicas. Mgtr. Susana Liruso Lecto comprensión de Textos en Inglés Arri, Daniela 12
De esta forma, en la pregunta Where did Maria work in 2011? How did 20th century money develop? b) What kind of money did they use? Importante: los auxiliares do/does/did NO tienen equivalente en castellano. Banks and stock exchanges can move millions at the touch of a button. Others could be eaten or used. Lecto comprensión de Textos en Inglés Arri, Daniela 13
14 I. Qué función cumplen estas palabras: VERBO, SUSTANTIVO o ADJETIVO? Son verbos modales: CAN, COULD, MAY, MIGHT, SHOULD, WOULD, WILL, SHALL, OUGHT TO. II. Lea nuevamente los ejemplos anteriores. Qué indican can y could?
Case 1 McDonald s The famous fast food company, McDonald s, launched campaign 55 to help it compete against rivals like Burger King and Wendy s. They had a six-week promotion costing $320 million. McDonald s offered a Big Mac (a type of hamburger) for 55 cents instead of $1.90. When customers were at the cash register, they found that they had to buy French fries and a drink at the full price to get the cheap burger. Case 3 Irish Tourist Board The Irish Tourist Board used to have the shamrock as its symbol. Recently it spent 100 developing a new logo to attract tourists to Ireland. The logo showed to people with their arms outstretched in welcome. A tiny shamrock can be seen between the two bodies. The new logo was part of a campaign to promote Ireland as a modern country offering good food to a company. It was put on all the Tourist Board promotional material. The television and advertising campaign included music by the well-known group Cranberries and showed pictures of a romantic, loving Ireland. It was very successful abroad. Tourism increased by 14% in four months. Unfortunately the Irish people didn t like the logo. The Minister of Tourism ordered the Tourist Board to get rid of the logo and bring back the shamrock or something similar. Lecto comprensión de Textos en Inglés Arri, Daniela 16
The famous fast food company, Mc Donald s, launched Campaign 55 to help it compete against rivals like Burger King and Wendy s. b) When customers were at the cash register, they found that they had to buy french fries and a drink at the full price to get the cheap burger.
III. En el texto de la guía 9 se encuentra la siguiente oración Teams are formed vertically and horizontally so that all parts of the organization participate in sharing information and planning improvements. La construcción so that indica propósito. Interprete cuál es ese propósito. 5. The Irish Tourist Board used to have the shamrock The Minister of Tourism ordered the Tourist Board to get rid of then logo La expresión used to (=solía) siempre va seguida de un verbo en infinitivo pero no indica propósito.
