2 Competition Official Selection - Shorts Nos alegra haber encontrado, entre la vasta producción nacional de cortometrajes, una serie de trabajos que reflejan búsquedas personales. Justamente por ello, se vuelven atractivos y a su vez indispensables para el espíritu de esta sección. Como en ediciones pasadas, presentamos, por un lado, un programa competitivo de cortometrajes argentinos, y por otro, una muestra muy variada de otros tantos trabajos locales. Además, gracias a la colaboración del Festival Internacional de Cine de Gijón y del Principado de Asturias, se podrá ver una serie de cortos asturianos de reciente producción, que establecen un interesante diálogo con la producción nacional. Violeta Bava y Eloísa Solaas We are pleased to find among the vast output of national short features a series of works reflecting personal quests. That is exactly the reason why they become at once alluring and indispensable to the spirit of this section. As in past editions, we present an Argentine shorts competitive program and a wide sample of other local works. Additionally, a series of recent Asturian shorts, which establish an interesting dialogue with local productions, is brought to you courtesy of Gijón International Film Festival and the Principality of Asturias. Con una joven pareja de enamorados como protagonista, In the Eye Abides the Heart propone reflexionar acerca de los usos y costumbres de las relaciones amorosas a través del tiempo. La elección de recursos narrativos, que remiten al cine mudo, abren paso a otra reflexión, acerca de otros usos y costumbres: los del lenguaje cinematográfico. The song in this short's title is based on a German traditional song translated into English in In order to illustrate it, Mary Sweeney chose Buenos Aires as the location of the story. With a young couple as main characters, In the Eye Abides the Heart proposes a reflection on the uses and customs of love relationships through time. The choice of narrative tools reminiscent of silent films, gives way to another reflection, on another set of uses and customs: those of the language of cinema. Mary Sweeney Se inició como asistente de montaje, y, ocasionalmente, sonidista y actriz. Se destacó fundamentalmente como editora de varios títulos de David Lynch, desde Twin Peaks ( , el film y la serie televisiva) en adelante: fue editora y productora de Carretera perdida (1997), Una historia sencilla (1999) y El camino de los sueños (2001), y productora de Inland Empire (2006). She started her career as an assistant editor and, on occasions, sound operator and actress. Best-known as editor of various David Lynch titles, from Twin Peaks ( , film and TV series) on: editor and producer of Lost Highway (1997), The Straight Story (1999) and Mulholland Drive (2001) and producer of Inland Empire (2006).

Ana Ana tiene 12 años y, como todos los veranos, se va de vacaciones a la casa de campo con su mamá, su tía y sus dos primos. Este verano va a ser diferente de todos. La guerra (The War) El escenario es el pasado, donde un burgués y un peón de campo atraviesan la llanura huyendo de un enemigo que los acosa y que no vemos. The scenery is the past, where a bourgeois and a laborer from the country cross the plain fleeing from an enemy that stalks them and we don't see. Hacia dentro Un ser está descontento con el mundo exterior. Se mira en un espejo y ve en sus ojos algo que lo lleva a meterse hacia dentro, creyendo que ahí, encontrará lo que busca. Pero no resulta así. A being is unhappy with the outside world. 12 Competition Asturian Shorts Exhibition Muestra de cortos asturianos Maquis (Se llamó maquis al movimiento guerrillero republicano que continuó en España la lucha armada contra el franquismo, una vez terminada la Guerra Civil.) Desde mediados de los noventa, el cortometraje en España repitió hasta la extenuación el mismo esquema que venía lastrando a sus hermanos mayores: cine académico, obsesionado por contar una historia y contarla bien. Mucho pequeño cine encorsetado y endogámico rodado con la sola obsesión de seducir a algún productor y sonsacarle financiación para el primer largo. Pero cuando en una región el caso de Asturias apenas se conceden ayudas a los nuevos realizadores, no hay escuelas de cine ni prácticamente lugares donde mostrar lo que se rueda, sólo quedan dos soluciones, el exilio o la guerrilla: lanzarse al monte y, cámara en mano digital, por supuesto, resistir desde la trinchera de la más absoluta y radical libertad creativa. Esta fue la actitud de buena parte de los realizadores que forman parte del programa Rellumes* Todo encaja: cine en los márgenes en una región periférica. Ramón Lluis Bande parte de un poema de Xuan Bello para firmar con Paniceiros, un retrato austero de la Asturias rural anclada en el tiempo y sobreviviendo del orgullo de tiempos mejores. Lluvina mira con lucidez y melancolía el pasado y la falta de futuro de las ciudades levantadas alrededor del carbón. Recuerdos de las huelgas, los jubilados por silicosis a los cuarenta De algún modo, Nenyure, de Jorge Rivero, muestra el mismo desencanto y las mismas ciudades derrotadas, aunque con una mirada más abstracta y terrible. A Fin A es la angustia de una espera que se vuelve insostenible, agonía, paciencia y pulso, mientras que Bon Voyeur, de Iraida Lombardía, es un derroche de nervio digital, puro y loco cine punk. Las películas de José Enrique Iglesias y Santos Hevia, rodadas en 35 milímetros, además de inscribirse en el más puro cine narrativo, representan cierto cine de la diáspora. Uno reside en Polonia; el otro, en Bélgica. El primero, en Pomiedzy, nos entrega un pequeño y poderoso melodrama sobre paternidades no deseadas. Hevia, en Matar el Tiempu, vuelve a su aldea natal para encontrarse con sus dos únicos habitantes, aún amarrados a viejos rencores y odios. * Rellumes significa destellos en asturiano. Fran Gayo

13 79125 Competencia Muestra cortos asturianos Asturian Shorts Exhibition Maquis ( Maquis was the name given to the Republican guerrilla movement which continued armed resistance against Franco in Spain, once the Civil War was over.) Since the mid '90s, the Spanish short subject replicated ad nauseam the same tired formula that had been straitjacketing its older brothers: academic cinema, obsessed with telling a story and telling it right. Much small, corseted, and endogamic cinema shot with the sole obsession of seducing some producer and coaxing some funding for a first feature film out of him. However, when a region Asturias is the case in point hardly supports new filmmakers, there are neither film schools nor anywhere to show what has been shot, only two solutions remain, exile or guerrilla: venturing into the wilderness and, camera in hand digital, of course resist from the trenches of the most absolute, radical creative freedom. This was the attitude of a good many filmmakers making up the Rellumes* program Everything fits: marginal cinema in a peripheral region. Ramón Lluis Bande takes a poem by Xuan Bello in order to paint, with Paniceiros, an austere portrait of a time-forsaken rural Asturias surviving on the proud memory of better days. With melancholy and lucidity, Lluvina looks at the past and the non-existing future of the cities built around coal-mining. Memories of strikes and men retiring at forty because of silicosis Somehow, Jorge Rivero's Nenyure, displays the same disenchantment and the same defeated cities, albeit with a more abstract, terrible gaze. A Fin A is the anguish of a wait that becomes untenable, agony, patience and pulse, whereas Iraida Lombardía's Bon Voyeur is an profusion of digital nerve; pure and crazy punk cinema. José Enrique Iglesias and Santos Hevia's films, shot on 35 mm, besides belonging to the purest narrative cinema, represent a certain diaspora cinema. One lives in Poland; the other, in Belgium. The first, in Pomiedzy, offers a small, poignant melodrama on unwanted paternity. Hevia, in Matar el Tiempu, returns to his home village only to find its only two inhabitants, still tied to old grudges and hates. * Rellumes means flashes in Asturian. FG
