4 Entrevista EXTRATERRESTRES DE VALLADOLID Urano Players son de Valladolid, pero tras la escucha de Voyager Rock s, su primer largo de presentación, autoeditado a finales del pasado 2009, uno se plantea si Valladolid está en nuestra galaxia o mucho más allá de sus confines. Urano Players facturan un hip hop experimental y electrónico repleto de nubes cósmicas, de reflexiones complejas sobre la vida cotidiana urbanita, a través de textos abstractos y rimas que se alejan de lo evidente como un cohete intergaláctico se aleja de la tierra. una entrevista de GNZ 07

5 URANO PLAYERS A modo de presentación ante nuestros lectores... quién compone Urano Players y qué papel jugáis cada uno? Urano Players está compuesto por Erik (MC), Edu (MC), Miguel Grimaldo (Mc y Beatmaker), Morenno H (Mc y Beatmaker), Zar1 (Dj y Beatmaker) y Porre (Dj y Beatmaker). Cuándo, cómo y por qué os juntasteis como grupo? Nos juntamos como grupo a mediados de 2007 básicamente por una afinidad musical y un concepto y visión similar de la música. Todos proveníamos de antiguas formaciones, antiguos grupos y llegó un momento en que el camino nos juntó y empezamos a ir maquinando temas. El primer tema que hicimos como Urano Players fue Nebulosas ( Acido y Oxigeno, Erik) y a partir de ahí seguimos maquinando cosas, hasta que llegó el momento de preparar este trabajo en conjunto. Es evidente que le dais mucha importancia a las bases musicales de vuestras canciones y que escucháis muchos estilos diferentes cómo es el proceso de composición de un tema de Urano Players? No tenemos un proceso de composición definido. Todos los productores del grupo tienen un mismo concepto de sonido para Urano Players, existe una afinidad musical, así que cuando alguno de ellos hace un ritmo que nos cuadra básicamente escribimos sobre él y vamos dando forma al tema. Y cómo os inspiráis para componer unas letras como las vuestras, tan abstractas pero a la vez tan cercanas? Nos inspiramos en todo. Todo lo que nos rodea es fuente de inspiración, hablamos de nuestro entorno de una forma quizá un poco abstracta como dices, y hablar del entorno implica hablar de cosas cercanas. Es el día a día de 6 tipos normales, la magia de lo cotidiano en códigos cifrados. Habéis colaborado con El Hombre Viento en un tema, y también se ha currado el diseño de la portada de Voyager Rock s bajo nuestro humilde punto de vista, vuestros trabajos tienen en común una gran relación con el Spoken Word. Nos equivocamos? Desde luego el Spoken Word nos interesa, sobre todo por su relación evidente e implícita con el rap. Es un género al que prestamos atención como a otros muchos, pero tampoco creemos que exista una relación más allá de eso entre nuestra música y este estilo, al menos de manera consciente. Seguramente, como todas las influencias que uno absorbe, será algo que sale reflejado inconscientemente en el momento en que nos ponemos a crear y trabajar Y -cambiando de tema- por qué habéis decidido autoeditar vuestro trabajo? Es una cuestión de principios o por otro motivo? Ha sido una cuestión principalmente económica. En un principio iba a distribuirse únicamente en Internet, pero decidimos autoeditar nuestro trabajo para que hubiese gente que pudiera disfrutar de copias en formato físico. La razón de autoeditarnos es que era la única forma que teníamos a nuestro alcance de editar nuestro trabajo de forma física. Ha sido un proceso totalmente manual de cortar, pegar y grabar, y la verdad que hemos quedado bastante satisfechos con el resultado, también en gran medida por el gran trabajo de El Hombre Viento que comentabas antes. En un futuro nos gustaría poder editar algo en vinilo. Cómo funcionáis en directo? Qué tenéis previsto para 2010 en cuanto a actuaciones? Solemos hacer un formato más allá del clásico dos platos y micros. Por supuesto llevamos platos, es fundamental, pero a eso le solemos añadir dos MPC s, e incluso sintetizadores para crear música en directo y no solo reproducirla, que también. Nos quedan cosas por definir en nuestro directo, pero desde luego queremos que sean diferentes. De momento sólo tenemos confirmado nuestro directo en Cultura Urbana, en mayo, pero nos gustaría hacer muchos más. Después de las buenas críticas que ha

6 URANO PLAYERS recibido vuestro trabajo de presentación, tenéis algún proyecto entre manos para un futuro próximo? Lo primero que saldrá será una nueva maqueta de Erik titulada 8 beats, que serán 8 temas con 8 ritmos con alguna reminiscencia de sonidos 8 bits. Edu también está preparando temas para un trabajo en solitario que saldrá más adelante, y Zar1 está preparando una mixtape de rap además de alguna producción para los trabajos que va a publicar One Love junto a algún scratch con Porre. También saldremos en un recopilatorio digital que editará el sello Galleta Records (Props!) y algunas colaboraciones más que ya se irán desvelando. Como Urano Players volveremos a preparar algo pero aún no sabemos cuando ni como ni donde. Antes de terminar Qué está pasando en Valladolid? En los últimos tiempos vuestra ciudad está dando a luz un montón de artistas que han pasado a los lugares más destacados del panorama musical nacional menos comercial por ejemplo vuestro proyecto, pero también Diploide, el beatmaker Niño (ambos colaboran en vuestro disco), Funkforward, Héctor de la Puente, y seguro que nos dejamos a más de uno en el tintero A qué se debe tanta actividad artística y de tan buena calidad? Puede ser por la búsqueda de salidas en una ciudad que no ofrece nada a su juventud y que necesita una vía de escape. A pesar de este pequeño boom, por denominarlo de alguna manera, en la escena musical de nuestra ciudad estamos marginados y nos tenemos que mover de manera underground, ya que ciertos círculos como el del circuito oficial de conciertos, sigue estando cerrado para nosotros. Es una pena que los grupos con más proyección de la ciudad no podamos dar un directo en condiciones en ella. Esto es así debido a varios factores como las trabas que impone el Ayuntamiento al desarrollo de cualquier actividad o iniciativa cultural que pueda florecer, la escasez total de espacios verdaderamente adecuados y la comodidad de los promotores y del público. Por supuesto tenemos que mencionar a nuestro hombre K, cuyo trabajo también va a empezar a ver la luz a nivel nacional este año, algo que se merece de verdad. Algo que añadir, unas últimas palabras? Un saludo a todos los que siguen A Little Beat y al equipo que lo lleva por currar en esta iniciativa tan guapa y crear un espacio interesante en el que informarse y compartir. Próximas actuaciones Urano Players: Mayo Cultura Urbana (Madrid) ENGLISH VERSION Interview Urano Players come from Valladolid (Spain), but after the first listen to Voyager Rock s, their debut album self-published on late 2009, one starts to consider if Valladolid belongs to our galaxy or if it s far away of its limits. Urano Players make an experimental and electronic hip hop, full of cosmic clouds and of deep reflections about everyday s life in the city, through abstract lyrics and rhymes taking distance from the obvious as a rocket lifts-off from earth. Just to introduce your self to our readers, who s making up Urano Players and which is your role in the band? Urano Players are Erik (MC), Edu (MC), Miguel Grimaldo (MC and beatmaker), Morenno H (MC and beatmaker), Zarl (Dj and beatmaker) and Porre (Dj and beatmaker). When, how and why did you get together as a band? We gathered back in mid 2007, basically due to our musical affinity, and our similar vision and concept of music. We all came from different bands, old groups, and the moment came when our ways gathered us and we started composing tracks together. The first song we did as Urano Plares was Nebulosas ( Acido y Oxigeno, Erik) and from this point we kept working on stuff, until the moment arrived to prepare this common work. It s obvious, music is very important in your songs, and that you hear many different music styles Which is the composition process for an Urano Players track? We don t have a clearly defined composition process. The producers from the band have the same sound concept for Urano Players, we have a musical affinity, so when one of them arrives with a beat we basically write over and start moulding it. And how do you get inspiration to write the kind of lyrics you write, so abstract but at the same time so close? We get inspired by everything. Everything surrounding us is an inspiration, we talk about our environment in a certain abstract way, as you said before, and talking about our environment is talking about close things. It s everyday life of 6 normal guys, daily magic through encrypted codes. You have collaborated with El Hombre Viento in a song, and he has also made the cover design of Voyager Rock s we believe your works have a big relation with Spoken Word are we wrong? Of course we are interested by Spoken Word, mainly for its evident relation with rap. It s a genre we pay attention to, just like many others, but we don t believe there s any other relation between our music and this style, at least in a conscious way. As all the influences, I suppose it s something unconsciously reflected in our music when we work and create. And, changing the subject, why have you decided to publish your LP by yourselves? It s a principles question or of another kind? It s been for an economic reason mainly. First we wanted to distribute it only on the internet, but we decided to publish it by ourselves to get some hard copies to the people. Self-publishing was the only way to do it in a physical format. It s been a handcraft process, cut and paste and recording, and we are really proud of the result, also because of El Hombre Viento s work, as you said before. In a near future we would love to release something on vinyl. How do you work on stage? Which are your live acts plans for 2010? We use to make something else than two turntables and a microphone. Of course we have turntables on stage, it s basic, but we use to add a pair of MPC s, even some synthesizers to make music live, not just to reproduce music. We have still things to define, but we want to be different. At the moment we just have a big show confirmed in Cultura Urbana Festival (Madrid), in May, but we would love to make many more shows.

7 URANO PLAYERS After the good reviews received by your debut album, do you have any projects running for a close future? The first thing we are releasing is a demo by Erik called 8 beats, 8 tracks with 8 different beats, with an 8 bit sound reminiscence. Edu is preparing some tracks for a solo work, and it will be released later. Zarl is also working in a new rap mixtape, some productions for the One Love upcoming release, and some scratches with Porre. We ll also be featured in a digital compilation for Galleta Records (props!) and some collaborations that we ll reveal lately. As Urano Players we ll make a new thing, but we still don t know how, when or where Just before we finish what s going on in Valladolid? Your city is lately giving birth to a bunch of artists who have arrived to the top of the alternative music panorama in Spain. We are talking about your project, but also about Diploide, Niño (the beatmaker), Funkforward, Héctor de la Puente, and I m sure we are forgetting plenty of them How do you explain such a good artistic activity? It s maybe because people needs a way out from a city without any offer for the youth. In spite of this little boom, in the musical panorama of our city we are absolutely marginalized, and we have to move underground, as the official shows circuit is still closed for us. It s a shame that the most renowned bands of the city can t make a decent show there. This is due to different factors, like City Hall obstructions to any thriving cultural movement or initiative; or the absolute lack of adequate spaces, and the promoters and public laziness. We have to mention our man K, who is starting to see the light in the national panorama this year, something he really deserves. Something else, some last words? Big up to all the A Little Beat followers, and to their team for such a nice initiative, for making this interesting space for information and sharing. The truth is inside you! 8 RQM Entrevista Es complicado hablar de los orígenes del MC y productor RQM. Nació en Polonia, se crió en Nueva York, y ha vivido a caballo entre Berlín y Barcelona. Tantos viajes y culturas han dado forma a un artista diferente, reconocido internacionalmente por su aportación a la música electrónica más vanguardista (sus temas son habituales en las emisiones de la gurú mediática Mary Anne Hobbs en BBC Radio 1). Pero su labor va más allá de la música, y lo ha dejado bien claro con la publicación de su último EP, Colors Fade (publicado en el sello Baby Sumo), en colaboración junto al artista plástico Remed, que se ha encargado del arte de la edición limitada de 100 vinilos de 7 pulgadas, un trabajo sublime para los coleccionistas más exigentes. Y si nos adentramos en el EP, encontramos dos temas, Atomic Fusion y Colors Fade remezclados por artistas del calibre de Siriusmo (amiguete de Modeselektor), Son of Kick, Chris de Luca, The Glue Kids y JF (de Beatspoke). Cadencias pausadas pero contundentes, que sobrepasan los márgenes establecidos del Dubstep, reminiscencias de Pop sofisticado, sintetizadores y unos bajos potentes que predominan en todo el trabajo, pero con distintos enfoques musicales según cada una de las re-interpretaciones de los diferentes productores invitados. 9 RQM Descubrimos tu existencia a través de tu trabajo en Al-Haca y tus colaboraciones con dj Tres y Jahcoozi, pero para aquellos de nuestros lectores que acaban de conocerte cuáles son tus orígenes en el mundo de la música? Si nos remontamos a los orígenes reales, pues en los 90, con mis proyectos de fusión de Hardcore Neoyorquino y Hip Hop en el instituto. De ahí pasé a presentar y cantar en eventos de Drum & Bass, micros abiertos, proyectos de electrónica variada y finalmente aterricé en Berlín y me vi atrapado en esa espiral del Berlín Bass hice algunos temas con Stereotyp, Tolcha, Jahcoozi, Chris de Luca, etc Tu último trabajo Colors Fade nos ha sorprendido gratamente, tanto por su contenido como por su continente cómo decidiste darle ese valor añadido a tu trabajo realizando una serie limitada junto a Remed? Este EP marca el comienzo de un nuevo capítulo para mí me dispongo a trabajar en solitario desde ahora, y las colaboraciones las enfoco como algo puramente paralelo así que quería hacer algo especial para celebrarlo. Una referencia digital es algo intangible y si no dispones de pasta para hacer buenos videoclips, pues realmente le falta algo de carácter, quiero decir que no es más que lanzar un mp3 a la red. Yo pensaba que sería la bomba hacer algo con más alma, así que le pedí a Remed que interpretara el tema principal con un cuadro. Y esa pintura acabó en las portadas de una edición limitada en 7 sólo hay 84 disponibles en Europa, y todavía quedan algunas en Cada disco es, literalmente, una pieza de un puzzle. Y finalmente, decidimos hacer lo contrario a lo que suelen hacer la mayoría de sellos discográficos, que es subir el precio del producto basándose en que son ediciones limitadas, y en vez de eso, bajamos los precios del pack. Así que por 25 Euros te llevas un 7 pulgadas, un trozo del cuadro y una camiseta Carhartt de edición limitada con un diseño de Remed. El objetivo era ofrecer a nuestra gente un regalo en condiciones no todo se basa en el beneficio, o al menos no debería ser así! Se trata de un trabajo bastante conceptual, tanto en el aspecto gráfico como en el musical, con el amor autodestructivo como tema de fondo no es así? Hay algo de auto-biográfico en él? Todas mis canciones son autobiográficas de algún modo, incluso si las historias se alejan de las emociones que las sostienen, todo surge de movidas por las que he pasado. Pero precisamente este trabajo es un poco más directo trata un periodo de mi vida en particular, aunque la chica protagonista de la canción sea un collage de varias mujeres distintas. Quiero mandar un saludo a Javi de Glue Kids por el ritmo que desató este viaje a través de esta historia, y a su hermano por darme el concepto del EP al completo. Y háblanos sobre las colaboraciones con las que has contado en este trabajo, te has rodeado de un grupo de productores de lo más diverso por qué? No fue algo premeditado. Atomic Fusion fue una movida que mantuve en frío un par de años porque me gustaba tanto que no podía encontrar el contexto apropiado para publicarla. Colors fade la grabé en Barcelona con JF en el estudio de Beatspoke, y como Josh tenía los archivos y me gusta cómo retuerce los ritmos, le pedí que se currara una remezcla. Chris de Luca es como mi hermano, y me debía un remix por las movidas que hice con CLP, y luego estuve actuando con Son Of Kick, que ha estado publicando algunas bestialidades, así que si, el proceso de poner todo esto junto fue todo muy orgánico. La publicación del EP ha coincidido con tu regreso a Berlín tras una larga temporada viviendo en Barcelona el clima Mediterráneo no te dejaba trabajar? Ja ja ja tío aquí es como si llegara la

El mes que viene voy a publicar Colors Fade en Japón con algunas remezclas japonesas y después de eso estaré listo para cualquier novedad. an interview by GNZ / photos: Susana Gellida segunda glaciación todo lo que puedo hacer es quedarme en casa y currar! Quiero decir que si no tienes nada con qué ocuparte te puedes volver totalmente loco. Hay algunos fieras berlineses por aquí que son capaces de sentarse en una terraza y sorber un café a diez grados bajo cero, pero yo todavía no he llegado a dominar ese nivel. Y no me malinterpretes, echo mucho de menos todo lo que viví cuando estuve en tu tierra, pero todavía no pillo la lógica de porqué todos los buenos bolos que conseguí mientras vivía en España los conseguía vía Berlín!? Mientras viví en España conseguí actuaciones en Asia, Sur-América, en Kiev, por toda Europa, pero no fui capaz de conseguir ni un puto concierto en Madrid! Y ahora que has vuelto a establecerte en Berlín, cuáles son tus proyectos de futuro? Necesito volver al estudio y ponerme a grabar otra vez el curro del sello me ha quitado Colors Fade es la primera referencia de tu propio sello, Baby Sumo Cómo decidiste embarcarte en una aventura así? Y cómo enfocas el funcionamiento de tu sello qué referencias / artistas tienes en parrilla? Lancé el sello únicamente para tener la libertad de publicar mis canciones en cualquier momento. Encontrar el sello adecuado absorbe demasiada energía, además la mitad de las veces estás de mala hostia porque no le han hecho justicia a tu disco. Pensé que podía hacer un mejor trabajo que los sellos con los que había trabajado y lo hice. Quiero decir, que si tuviera más dinero para invertir, el cielo sería el límite. Pero aún con un presupuesto limitado la referencia ha tenido un gran impacto. Y el sello es sólo para mis publicaciones, no voy a firmar con otros artistas si puedo elegir entre el curro de oficina y el de estudio, me quedo con lo último, siempre. Algo que añadir? Dos cosas roba la música, pero acude a los conciertos a apoyar a los artistas que te gustan! Y recuerda: si consumes rápido, te atragantas! It s difficult to introduce an artist such as MC and producer RQM. Born in Poland, raised in New York and living between Barcelona and Berlin. So many travels and such different cultures have moulded a different kind of artist, internationally known for his contribution to cutting-edge electronic music (it s usual to hear his tracks at Mary Anne Hobbs s shows at BBC Radio 1). But his job goes much more further than just music, and he has proved it with his latest release, Colors Fade EP (released at his own label Baby Sumo), besides graphic artist Remed, responsible of the art of a 100 units limited 7 edition. A brilliant work, a true object of desire for collectors. And if we go deeper in the EP, we ll find two tracks, Atomic Fusion and Colors Fade, remixed by artists as Siriusmo (Modeselektor affiliate), Son of Kick, Chris de Luca, The Glue Kids and JF. Slow but powerful rhythms, breaking the established Dubstep boundaries, sophisticated Pop reminiscences, synths and huge bass all over the record, all this seen through the different lenses of each producer. But no-one better than RQM himself to talk about his new work, and future projects.

11 We knew about your work through Al-Haca and your collaborations with dj Tres and Jahcoozi, but for those who just discovered RQM which are your musical origins? I mean if we take it back to the real origins - NYC Hardcore Hip Hop fusion high school projects back in the 90s. From there I went through the whole D&B hosting/emceeing thing, open mics, random Electronica projects and eventually I landed in Berlin and got caught in this whole Berlin Bass vortex - I did tracks with Stereotyp, Tolcha, Jahcoozi, Chris De Luca etc. etc. Your last work Colors Fade has surprised us in a very positive way, for it s content but also because of it s package, how did you decide to add this extra value to your EP with a limited edition collaborating with Remed? This EP marks an opening of a new chapter for me - I m taking it all out solo from now on and treating collaborations purely as a side thing - so I wanted to do something special to celebrate that. A digital release is intangible and if you don t have the loot to make proper music videos it really lacks character - I mean it s just an mp3 thrown out into the net. I figured it would be boom to do something really soulful so I asked REMED to interpret the lead tune with a painting. Now the painting ended up on the covers of a limited edition 7 run - only 84 of them are available in Europe. Some are still left: visit Each record is literally a piece of a puzzle. And on top that we decided to do the opposite of what most labels do, which is to raise the price of the product on the basis of having a limited edition - instead we priced the packages down. So for 25 Euros you get a 7, a piece of the painting and a limited Edition REMED designed Carhartt tshirt. The point was to give our peoples a proper gift - it s not all about profit or at least it doesn t have to be! It s a very conceptual work, in the graphics aspect but also musically, with auto-destructive love as a background theme? Isn t it? Is there something autobiographic? All my songs are autobiographical in some way, even if the stories are far out the emotion that supports them comes from actual shit that I went through. But this one right here is a bit more direct - it deals with a particular time in my life, but still the girl protagonist of the song is a collage of a few different ladies. Big ups to Javi from the Glue Kids for the beat that sparked the journey into this story line - and the brother actually gave me the concept for the whole EP. And tell us something about the collaborations in this EP? You have surrounded yourself with a wide range of producers? Why? This wasn t a premeditated move. Atomic Fusion - that joint I had on ice for a couple of years cause I love it so much I couldn t find the right context to release it. Colors Fade that I recorded in Barcelona with JF in the Beatspoke studios and since he had the files and I love how he flips beats I asked him to take a jab at remixing it. Chris De Luca is a brother of mine and he owed me a remix for the stuff that I did for CLP and then I ve been performing with Son Of Kick recently and he s been releasing some monsters so yeah - the process of getting this whole thing together was all organic. The EP publication coincides with your return to Berlin, after a long stay in Barcelona. The Mediterranean climate doesn t allow you to work? Ha ha...yo it s like the second coming of the ice age out here - all i can do is stay inside and work! I mean you ll literally lose your fucking mind if you have nothing to do. I mean there are some hardcore Berliners out here who will sit outside of a cafe and sip on coffee in minus 10 degree weather, but I didn t master that level yet. And don t get me wrong - I miss what I had when I was living in your neck of the woods, but I still don t get the logic of why all the good gigs that I got in Spain had to come through Berlin?! While living in Spain I got to fly out to do shows in Asia, South America, in Kiev, all over Europe for that matter, but I couldn t get a fucking single gig in Madrid! And now you re back in Berlin, which are your future projects? I just need to get back into the studio and start recording again the label business took up too much of my time. Next month I ll be releasing Colors Fade in Japan with some Japanese remixes and then I m up for knocking out newness. Colors Fade is the first release of your own label, Baby Sumo How did you decide to start such an adventure? And which are your label s aims? Upcoming releases/ artists? I started the label just to have the freedom to release my songs whenever. It takes too much energy to find the right label and then half the time you re bitter cause they didn t do your record justice. I thought I could do a better job than the labels that I worked with and I did. I mean if I had more money to invest - the sky s the limit. But still with a limited budget the release was high impact. And the label is just for my releases, I won t be signing other artists - if I can choose between office work and the studio the latter wins every time. Would you like to add something else? Two things... steal the music, but go out to shows to support the artists you feel! and remember: if you consume quick you choke!

13 MATADOR ROCKERS Descubrimos a Matador Rockers gracias a su participación en Date Cuenta (Del Palo Records), el disco de los Chacho Brodas publicado en 2009, y todas las alarmas saltaron en nuestras cabezas era posible lo que estábamos escuchando? Rimas fresquísimas, un flow fino como hacía mucho que no escuchábamos, y unas producciones venidas del futuro que nos ponían los pelos de punta, dejando lo del bombo-caja a la altura de un juego de niños al que ya no quieres jugar nunca más. En definitiva, Lio, Puto Chen, Ra y Zeto, o lo que es lo mismo, Matador Rockers, son la mejor mierda que habíamos escuchado en mucho tiempo, y no podíamos dejar pasar la oportunidad de entrevistar a los que van a ser protagonistas de la escena española de Hip Hop en los próximos tiempos. Y de eso estamos más que seguros, porque como ellos bien dicen, le han dado un bofetón al hip hop del estado, y con la mano abierta. Matador Rockers son una llamada de atención, y han dejado bien claro que todavía se pueden hacer cosas frescas y originales en el mundo del Hip Hop. Hagan sitio, Matador Rockers han llegado para quedarse. 24 Contadnos un poco quiénes son Lio, Puto Chen, Ra y Zeto, de dónde venís, y qué hizo el destino para juntaros como Matador Rockers. El Matador Rockers somos un grupo formado por cuatro chavalines de Rubí y Terrassa. Empezamos sobre los 13, 14 años a juguetear con esto del Hip Hop en diferentes agrupaciones. Lio, Ra y Zeto tenían ya un grupo llamado DEF y por coincidencias del destino se acabaron encontrando con el Puto Chen, que en aquel entonces estaba con un grupo llamado Rap N Vaso. A Chen rápidamente le atrajo el fresquismo y lo desenfadado que era DEF y decidió ponerse a trabajar con ellos como productor. Llego un punto donde los dos grupos hacían juntos los directos con el Nombre de Matador Rockers y como vieron que la cosa funcionaba decidieron no parar de llamarse así. Al final Rap N Vaso se disolvió y Chen acabo formando parte de DEF, que pasaría a llamarse ya tal y como lo conocemos El Matador Rockers. De dónde viene vuestro nombre? Nuestro lugar de trabajo, el estudio del Chen se llama Matador estudios. Es un nombre que vino por chiquilladas del productor y por su pasión por las culturas precolombinas. Al final estas cosas de críos acaban quedándose y ya las pronuncias sin pensar realmente en el significado real del término. El caso es que, ya que era en el Matador estudios donde pasábamos nuestras horas maquinando letras, haciendo beats, etc. Hasta cierto punto era lógico que el grupo se llamara el Matador Rockers representando las ideas que nacían en ese estudio. Estáis preparando un disco para Del Palo cómo surgió esta relación con Del Palo Records? Nuestra primera referencia vino por parte de Lio, el y Chen prepararon su primera maqueta llamada Bienvenidos a. Con este primer trabajo empezaron a ir de boca en boca y una de las orejas que estaba atenta era la del productor Javier Plaza A.K.A. Griffi que vio en nosotros el sonido que quería para sus nuevos proyectos en Del Palo. En breve, empezamos a tener encuentros con él y finalmente, después de que Ra sacara su maqueta (Freedom) nos decidimos a preparar el disco. Y para cuando tenéis prevista la publicación de vuestro primer trabajo? Si todo marcha bien como esta marchando, el trabajo estará acabado entre finales de Marzo o mediados de Abril. Será un disco de unos 15 temas donde el peso principal de la producción recae sobre las habilidosas manos del Puto Chen, aunque Griffi, nuestro productor favorito, también dejará caer algún que otro bombazo por ahí. El disco está grabado a camino entre El Matador Estudios y Strictly Jabugo, y podemos adelantaros que será un disco que dudamos que deje indiferente a nadie. En cuanto a colaboraciones supongo que podemos adelantar la presencia de toda nuestra nueva familia de Del Palo, gente de Terrassa a la que tenemos muchísimo afecto, y alguna que otra nueva amistad que aún no podemos desvelar ;) Por vuestro enfoque de la música y vuestra juventud, representáis un cambio generacional de la escena Hip Hop española. Cómo veis la escena nacional actual, y cómo pensáis que será su futuro? Realmente no vemos mal la escena actual del hip hop en España, quizás el único problema es que mucha gente no se arriesga a la hora

14 MATADOR ROCKERS de crear música y según nuestra manera de verla, es muy necesario el hecho de estar siempre al tanto y probar cosas nuevas. Si entiendes la música como un dialogo intergeneracional, si repites tu discurso, al final te acabaras pudriendo, y sería muy triste que con los grandes artistas que tenemos en nuestro país eso pasara. Por otro lado cada vez se van viendo mas ganas de innovar, es lo natural, cuando algo crece lo mejor que le puede pasar es ramificarse y especializar-se. De este manera del mismo árbol tenemos Hip Hop fusionado con R n B, con Reggae, con Electro, etc. A nuestro parecer, no hay nada más bonito que el mestizaje, ya que ésta cultura, en su origen, no es más que una comunión entre diferentes músicas. En cuanto al futuro, cada vez somos más los que rompemos estros grilletes de las normas del Hip Hop y abrimos nuestros oídos a nuevas experiencias. Creemos que el Hip Hop no necesita volver a ser lo que era, simplemente necesita ir encontrado su nuevo sitio. Con vuestras maquetas y colaboraciones habéis puesto a mucha gente en su sitio, antes incluso de publicar vuestro primer disco. Sois conscientes de ello? Qué reacciones habéis obtenido del público en este aspecto? Está siendo todo una locura! Nunca habríamos esperado una reacción tan expectante de un grupo que sólo tiene un par de maquetas y cuatro cositas más. De momento el público está reaccionando muy bien, están entendiendo muy bien lo que queremos transmitir y se la flipan tanto o más que nosotros con la música que hacemos. Estamos encantadísimos de que esto sea así y esperamos que siga la cosa por donde va! Una de las palabras que mejor define vuestro trabajo es libertad. Nos equivocamos? Si ya desde el principio nos definimos como un grupo libre de prejuicios respecto a la música, conseguimos algo que nos encanta, que el público no tenga ni idea de por donde va a tirar la cosa. No os ha pasado nunca que oís el primer tema de un disco y ya sabéis cómo va a sonar el resto? A nosotros nos gusta lo sorprendente, nos gusta escuchar música y decir: Mecagoenlaputa! Cómo han hecho eso? Matador Rockers es Hip Hop, pero también es salsa, es música clásica, es funk, electro, glitch, etc. Sólo existen dos estilos de música: la buena y la mala. Si la música no es libre seguir haciéndola no tiene sentido porque para nosotros es la máxima forma de libertad que existe en este mundo. Qué grupos o artistas recomendaríais a nuestros lectores? Pues ahora mismo N.E.R.D., Santigold, Major Lazer, Chromeo, Serj Tankian, Gorillaz, Flying Lotus y un montón mas! Si algo hacemos es devorar música como cabrones. Qué esperáis vosotros del futuro? Cuándo saquéis el disco qué viene luego? Esperamos que las cosas sigan un curso natural, no encontrarnos con malos ratos, poder seguir viviendo tranquilos y seguir haciendo música. Profesionalmente esperamos que el disco tengo buena acogida, que se entienda y no se critique por no ser algo que nunca ha pretendido ser, que podamos enseñar a cuanta mas gente mejor nuestro directo explosivo y promocionarnos todo lo que podamos. De momento os podemos adelantar varias cositas como algunas mixtapes que tenemos planteadas que salgan, videos, colaboraciones, etc. Una vez El Matador Rockers haya arrancado, dudamos que lo paren! And we are almost certain of this, because as Matador Rockers use to say, they have slapped the face of Spanish hip hop, with the hand wide open Matador Rockers are an attention call, and they have already proved that there are still fresh and original things to do in Hip Hop s culture Ladies and gentlemen, make room for Matador Rockers, they are coming to stay. Tell us a little more about who are Lio, Puto Chen, Ra and Zeto where do you come from, and how did destiny gathered you as Matador Rockers? We are a group of kids from Rubí and Terrasa (near Barcelona, Spain). We started playing with Hip Hop culture when we were 13 or 14 years old, through different projects. Lio, Ra and Zeto were in a band called DEF and by coincidence they met Puto Chen, who was in a band called Rap N Vaso. Chen was immediately caught by the freshness of DEF s uninhibited work, and he decided to get involved in the project as a producer. They arrived to a point where the two bands were performing together at their shows under the name of Matador Rockers, and as they saw it was working, they decided to keep the name. Finally Rap N Vaso dissolved and Chen definitely became a part of DEF, we changed the name and this is how we started Matador Records as we know it. Where does your name come from? It s our work place, Chen s studio is called Matador Estudios. It s an old name, childish things of the producer and his passion for pre-columbian cultures. Finally these child s games remain and you name it even without thinking about its real meaning. And as it was there at the studio where we spent our time writing, making beats, and so, it was natural to call ourselves Matador Rockers, representing the ideas coming out of this studio. You are working in an album for Del Palo how did your relationship with the label came up? Our first contact was through Lio. Chen and him were working on their first demo (called Bienvenidos a ). They started to distribute the demo all over by word of mouth, and the demo arrived to the producer Javier Plaza a.k.a. Griffi (from Chacho Brodas), who saw in us the sound he was looking for his label s new projects. So we started meeting, and finally, after Ra published his demo Freedom we decided to prepare the new album. And when is it going to be released? If nothing goes wrong, it will be out on late March, mid April. It s going to be a 15 tracks LP, where main productions belong to Puto Chen s skillful hands, although Griffi, our favourite producer, will also drop some bombs on it. The album has been recorded between El Matador Estudios and Strictly Jabugo studio, and we can tell you in advance it s not gonna leave no one indifferent. For the collaborations, we have had all the Del Palo family, people from Terrassa we are fond of, and some new friends we can t still reveal ;) 27

15 MATADOR ROCKERS Due to your vision of music and to your youth, you represent a generational change for the Spanish Hip Hop. What s your opinion about actual scene, and how do you imagine its future? We don t really see a bad situation within Spanish hip hop actual scene, maybe the only problem is that too many people don t take risks making music and, according to our point of view, it s absolutely necessary to stay on the top of it and try new things. If you understand music as an inter-generational dialogue, and you repeat your speech, you ll finally rot, and this would be really sad to happen in a country with such good artists. In the other hand, there are more people trying to innovate, as it s natural, when something grows the best thing it could happen is to branch and get specialised. In this way, from the same tree, we have different branches growing, there are many Hip Hop fusions with R n B, Reggae, Electro, etc We believe there s nothing more beautiful than crossbreeding, as this culture, on its origins, it s nothing else that a communion of different musical styles. Regarding the future, we are more and more people breaking the Hip Hop rules shackles and we open our ears to new experiences. We believe Hip Hop doesn t need to be how it was in the past, it just needs to find a new place and fit in. With your demos and collaborations you have made a serious call of attention to a lot of people, even before your release your first album. Are you conscious of this? What kind of reactions have you obtained from the audience in this aspect? It s crazy! We had never expected such a reaction from the audience for a band with only a pair of demos and a few things more By the moment the public is reacting very well, they understand our message, and they go as nuts as we do with our music. We are delighted with it, and we hope it continues like this! One of the best words to define your work is freedom, are we wrong? From the beginning we define ourselves as a band free from prejudices towards music, and we manage to make something we really love, to surprise the audience in a way they don t know what s next. Haven t you ever heard the first song of an album for the first time, knowing what s going on next? We love startling, we enjoy listening music and saying: WTF! How did they do this? Matador Rockers is about Hip Hop, but it s also Salsa, Classical, Funk, Electro, Glitch, etc There are only two kinds of music: good and bad. If music is not free.. to keep doing music doesn t have any sense, it s the highest kind of freedom that we know in this world. Which bands or artists would you recommend to our readers? Well, actually N.E.R.D., Santigold, Major Lazer, Chromeo, Serj Tankian, Gorillaz, Flying Lotus and many more! If there s something we sure do it s devouring music like bastards! What do you expect from the future? After you release the album what s next? We hope things will follow the natural path hope not to face bad moments, to keep living quiet and keep doing music. Professionally, we hope the album will have a nice welcome, not to be misunderstood, and not to be criticised for something we never pretend to be. We hope to be able to perform our explosive live in front of the larger audiences that s possible, and to promote as much as we can. We are also preparing some mixtapes, videos, new collaborations once the Matador Rockers starts, it s gonna be unstoppable. Something else? Yeah Lost (the TV series) is driving us crazy! 20 Entrevista NANDO GARCÍA-GUERETA UN JAMAICANO MÁS una entrevista de Larry ACR El de Nando es un caso extraño como pocos. Supone un salto migratorio a la inversa: un habitante del estresante primer mundo que se traslada a vivir a Jamaica, el país de la vida virtuosa del take it easy y de la despreocupación del no problem, man, del reggae o, más concretamente, el dancehall impregnándolo absolutamente todo, de la musicalidad lingüística del inglés criollo patois, del menos es más. Pese a ello y a sus autoconfesiones como persona perezosa, resulta innegable que Nando ha logrado asentarse y granjearse un huequecito en el corazón de los jamaicanos. Por su trabajo incansable como productor audiovisual y musical, por su labor social en penitenciarías, polideportivos y escuelas, por amar y respetar una cultura sin intentar desvirtuarla o pervertirla, por vivirla en primera persona y por saber integrarse en la comunidad, Nando es un jamaicano más. Y no parece que tenga intención de regresar... 39
