1 June 1, 2015 Water supply in Lake Sonoma, our major source of drinking water, is 85% of capacity and Lake Mendocino is 66% of the target water supply storage curve, which is below normal for this time of year. Due to ongoing drought conditions Santa Rosa remains in Stage 1- Mandatory, requiring: 20% community-wide (not individual) reduction in water-use Adoption of water conserving behaviors (e.g. 5 min showers) Elimination of water waste (e.g. eliminating runoff from irrigation) Santa Rosa and the region is engaging with youth to help promote saving water and drought awareness through classroom education, community events, poster contest, and more. Santa Rosa Water is also meeting with business groups including the Sonoma County Business Executive s Association and the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce to provide drought tools and support. To reach our residential customers, Santa Rosa Water hosted a successful and very well attended Water Smart Expo at Santa Rosa s Wednesday Night Market. At the Expo participants asked experts about sustainable landscaping, graywater and rainwater systems, and native and drought tolerant plants. Participants also learned about water saving tips and available rebates to support their water saving goals. In addition, Santa Rosa continues to work closely with the region to promote the There s Never Enough to Waste. Turn the Water Off drought campaign through the Sonoma-Marin Saving Water Partnership. The Partnership provides watershed based education and outreach, which includes radio, print, social media, and online advertising to increase drought awareness and access to tools. 3 May 18, 2015 Water supply in Lake Sonoma, our major source of drinking water, is 86% of capacity and Lake Mendocino is 67% of the target water supply storage curve, which is below normal for this time of year. To comply with the statewide emergency drought regulations and continue to meet our City s mandate of a 20% community-wide reduction in water-use customers are required to adopt water conserving behaviors and eliminate water waste. A common question from many customers is do they need to save an additional 20% over what they saved last year? We are not asking customers to save an additional 20% over last year. We are asking customers to keep implementing the water conserving measures and behaviors they implemented last year and if possible, consider doing a little more. One easy way to do a little more and increase water savings is to follow our free WaterSmart watering recommendations for yards and outdoor landscapes. WaterSmart provides recommended run times for both drip irrigation and sprinkler systems based on plant type. Using WaterSmart recommendations and irrigating between midnight and 6am will reduce water loss from evaporation and wind. 4 May 11, 2015 Water supply in Lake Sonoma, our major source of drinking water, is 86% of capacity and Lake Mendocino is 67% of the target water supply storage curve, which is slightly below normal for this time of year. In order for Santa Rosa to comply with newly adopted State emergency drought regulations and prolong our local water supply, Santa Rosa will remain in Stage 1 20% Mandatory of our Water Shortage Plan. The following water use restrictions apply: Outdoor irrigation may only occur between 8pm and 6am No irrigation is allowed during and up to 48 hours after measurable rainfall No washing down of hardscapes (e.g. sidewalks, driveways, etc), unless required for public health and safety No use of potable water for street washing Must use a shut-off hose nozzle on all garden and utility hoses Restaurants must participate in the water-on-request program Hotels and motels must allow guests the option of not having linens and towels laundered daily Fountains may only operate if water is recirculating To save water outdoors this summer customers are encouraged to follow these simple tips: Check your irrigation system for leaks Irrigate during pre-dawn hours Utilize free weekly watering recommendations at srcity.org/watersmart Prioritize the watering of shade trees Upgrade to a drip irrigation system (rebate available) Transform your lawn into a beautiful low water use landscape (rebate available) Mulch to reduce evaporation and discourage weeds Install a graywater and/or rainwater harvesting system (rebates available) Santa Rosa offers many helpful tools to customers looking for ways to save indoors and outdoors. 5 April 28, 2015 Water supply in our local reservoirs is 69% of capacity in Lake Mendocino and 87% in Lake Sonoma, which is slightly below normal for this time of year. Staff is closely following developments at the State related to the emergency drought regulations. Updated State emergency drought regulations are scheduled to be released today (4/28/2015) and the State Water Board is scheduled to consider the emergency drought regulations on May 5 th or 6 th. Nuestro personal de Santa Rosa Water (El Departamento de Agua de la Ciudad de Santa Rosa) continúa siguiendo de cerca los acontecimientos en el Estado relacionados con los reglamentos de emergencia sobre la sequía. 7 April 20, 2015 Water supply in our local reservoirs is at 56% of the maximum summertime capacity in Lake Mendocino and 88% in Lake Sonoma, which is slightly below normal for this time of year. Late last week, the State Water Board released draft emergency drought regulations for implementing the Governor s Order to reduce water use by 25% statewide. The draft regulations recognize per capita water use and prior conservation. The draft regulations propose a conservation requirement of 16% for Santa Rosa and would not require Santa Rosa to amend the City s Water Shortage Plan. The State Water Board is tentatively scheduled to consider the draft regulations on May 5 th or 6 th. Santa Rosa Water continues to closely follow the emergency drought regulations to make sure the City is in compliance. 8 April 13, 2015 Water supply in our local reservoirs is 56% of maximum summertime capacity in Lake Mendocino and 88% in Lake Sonoma, which is slightly below normal for this time of year. Santa Rosa Water continues to closely follow the State s emergency drought regulations and the Governor s Order to reduce water use 25% statewide. Last week the State Water Board released a proposal to address the Governor s Order, which takes into account per capita water usage by requiring areas with higher per capita water usage to achieve greater reductions than those with low per capita use. As a result of our longstanding commitment to water conservation the State is proposing to maintain a 20% communitywide reduction in water use for Santa Rosa. Over the last 8 months Santa Rosa customers have saved 1 billion gallons of water, reducing water use by 18% in comparison to It is important that we all continue to do our part to reach 20% water savings. To insure we reach and maintain the 20% mandate from the State and to comply with the recently adopted emergency drought regulations, Santa Rosa Water will be bringing forward a recommendation for consideration by the Board of Public Utilities and City Council to limit the number of days irrigation can occur. Santa Rosa Water (El Departamento de Agua de la Ciudad de Santa Rosa) continúa siguiendo de cerca las regulaciones de emergencia sobre la sequía del Estado y el decreto ejecutivo del Gobernador para reducir el consumo de agua del 25% en todo el estado. La semana pasada la Junta Estatal de Agua (State Water Board) lanzó una propuesta para abordar la Orden del Gobernador, la cual toma en cuenta el consumo de agua per cápita al exigir que las zonas con mayor consumo de agua per cápita logren mayores reducciones que aquellos con bajo uso per cápita.
