1 Background ACTIVITY 1 MY CELEBRATION Christmas is a time to share with our families. Every family prepares special foods and celebrates the holidays according to their family traditions. One of the most important traditions in Latin America is the Nativity scene. Preparations begin by selecting the place where the nativity scene will be placed. The area is cleaned and prepared. In some countries they sell special green paper that looks like grass. This paper is carefully laid in the bottom. Usually shoe boxes are laid below the place where the manger will go. It has to raise above all the other surrounding areas. All the figures are positioned carefully except Baby Jesus. He is kept hidden until Christmas Eve where the family very proudly announces his birth. The Three Kings play an important role. They usually are place as far away from the stable as possible. Each day they are moved until January 6th when they arrive and with the presents and meet Baby Jesus. Every family keeps their decorations until their arrival. It is then, when our children experienced a second christmas because the kings bring them more presents. This activity is about celebrating holidays and special family traditions. Every student will share their special holiday traditions of Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Diwali (Festival of lights) celebrated in India. Materials 1. Coloring materials: markers, crayons, or coloring pencils. 2. Scissors 3. Glue 4. Copies of the handout Mi Celebración 1

2 Pre- Activity Bring a December calendar to class. Review the days of the week in Spanish with the class. Go over numbers from Play a game called Hoy, Ayer y Mañana. Make enough copies of the calendar for the class. Ask them qué día es hoy? (today) Continue asking about mañana and ayer. Continue the game but this time ask qué día es el dos de diciembre? They will need to use their calenday and figure out what day of the week is December 2? Keep playing the game until you reach the twenty-four Nochebuena and the twenty-five Navidad Ask them about birthdays. Ask the class, whose birthday is in December, quién cumple años en diciembre? The class should record all December birthdays in their calendar. They can also add family birthdays. Proceed with the holidays Qué fiestas hay en diciembre? Go over : Nochebuena (Christmas Eve 24 de diciembre) Navidad (Christmas Day- 25 de diciembre) Nochevieja (New Years Eve- 31 de diciembre) Año Nuevo (New Years Day- fisrt of January) Go over your holiday traditions. You should use follow the handout and provide samples from your prior holidays. Give students five minutes at the end of class to write down some thoughts about their favorite holiday traditions. Instructions 1. Distribute in class the handout: Mi Celebración Explain to the class the handout NOMBRE DE LA FIESTA (Navidad, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, DIVALI) They need to add their first name to the title. For example: Navidades de Juana. FECHA- They need to write the exact date of their celebration. For example Christamas is celebrated in latin America on December 24 (Christmas Eve) not December 25. HORA- Explain that holidays are celebrated differently. In America for example, the children open their gifts on the Christmas morning. Santa comes at midnight and brings the presents. The holiday continues with Christmas lunch and family celebrations. In South America many adults open presents at midnight. They have Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve and wait patiently until midnight when Papá Noel brings the presents. CLIMA Remind them that we have warm weather for Christmas. There is no white christmas in Latin America. Temperatures are between 70 y 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Ask them to choose their ideal weather for Christmas. Write the following prompts in the board. For example a Menorah is a symbol of Hanukkah, the Christmas tree, Santa Claus and the Nativity Scene are symbols of Christmas. MI SIMBOLO ES- Describe your holiday symbol. Include colors and functions. Name of the symbol( arbol, velas, ornamento, pesebre, estrella, Papá Noel) Color and shape Where it is located in your home?(other options are hall and bathroom) Sala (living room) Comedor (dining room) Balcón (balcony) Patio (yard) Cocina (kitchen) Jardin (garden) ACTIVIDADES FAVORITAS Ask them about their favorite holiday activity (Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa o Divali) Typical holiday activities are: Cantar canciones de Navidad (caroling) Encender las velas (light candles) Decorar el árbol (trimming the tree) Decorar la casa (house decorations) Comprar el árbol (buy the tree) Tomar chocolate caliente (hot cocoa) Mirar las vitrinas (window watching) Ver las decoraciones en el pueblo( Town decorations) Comprar presentes (buy gifts) Envolver regalos (wrap gifts) Recibir tarjetas de Navidad (receive cards) Cocinar comidas especiales (cook special foods) Bailar (dance) Preparar la mesa navideña (put the Christmas table) Abrir regalos (open presents) Hacer el pesebre (nativity) 3

Colores de la Celebración ROPA: Vestido largo o corto (dresses color/length) Pantalones largos(long pants -color) Camisa o sueter (sweater or shirt color) Blusa y falda (blouse/skirt colors) Sudadera (colors) sweatpants LA COMIDA: Qué platillos son parte de tu celebración? Favorite holiday foods Pavo relleno(turkey) Papa (potatoes) Cordero (lamb) Jamón Glazeado (ham) Arroz Lechón asado Pollo (chicken) Ensalada de vegetales (salad) Chuletas de cerdo (pork) Pescado y mariscos (fish) MENSAJE Qué mensaje da la fiesta? Your holiday message Unidad Familiar (family unity) Celebrar con amigos (celebrate with friends) Ser buenos (be good to one another) Ayudar a los amigos (help friends) Compartir (share) Paz ( peace) Once the assigment is finished, ask students to prepare a presentation. Each class selects five students to present their holiday to the class. You can do this the last week before the winter recess. They can bring to class any materials they want. Pictures, ceremonial objects, ingredients should be welcomed to class. Small Groups Activities 1. Divide students in small groups, preferably four. 2. Ask students to share their celebration in their groups. 3. Each group creates a list of things in common of their celebrations. 4. Distribute a blank peace of paper to each group. They will create a new celebration integrating the best elements from each individual selection. They also should draw a symbol to represent the holiday 5. Each group, in Spanish presents their new Celebration to the class. Presentations should include: Nombre, fecha, símbolos, actividades y colores. 6. Class selects the hoilday symbol to represent the class. 4

5 Future Activities 1. Every month bring a blank calendar to the class. Review days of the week and numbers from 1-31 with the class. You can do this by giving them the number (uno) and they will say the day (lunes). Continue until the last day of the month has been called-out 2. Once finished go over the holidays. For example in January: Año Nuevo, Los Reyes Magos, El Día de Martin Luther King. Go over their background and comparison to Latin America. Each student should label their calendars appropriately. 3. Write all the monthly birthdays in the board. Ask them quién cumple años durante ese mes en la clase? Sing Féliz Cumpleaños. 4. Repeat the same activity at the beginning of each month. At the end of the school year collect all the calendar months and give them a grade. 5

6 SPANISH VERSION Historia ACTIVIDAD 1 MI CELEBRACION La Navidad es época de compartir con nuestros seres queridos y deleitar manjares especialmente preparados para los días festivos. Todos tenemos tradiciones muy especiales según nuestro país de origen. A veces las diferencias son tan simples como comidas especiales o ceremonias únicas. En los países latinos, en su mayoría católicos la creación del pesebre es una actividad en la que las familias comparten. Todo comienza con la selección del sitio donde irá el pesebre. La familia busca una mesa o una caja y la cubren. Hay países donde venden un papel especial de color verde que imita la grama. Luego hay que escoger el sitio donde va el establo. Colocar las figuras y esconder al Niño Jesús hasta el tan anhelado día de su nacimiento. También se colocan los tres Reyes Magos a distancia prudente. Y día a día se van avanzando las figuras hasta que el 6 de Enero llegan a visitar y a dar regalos al niño. Con su llegada se recoge el pesebre y el árbol navideño concluyendo así la temporada navideña. En esta actividad se le pedirá a los alumnos que describan como celebran estos días festivos describiendo como celebran la Navidad, el Hanukkah o bien sea Kwanzaa. Aquellos que no celebran ninguna de estas fiestas pueden describir otras celebraciones como Diwali (El festival de Luces) que se celebra en India. Materiales 1. Papel de dibujar blanco 2. Materiales para pintar: marcadores, acuarelas, crayones o lápices de colores 3. Tijeras 4. Goma de pegar 5. Copias del papel Mi Celebración 6

7 Pre- Actividad Comienze por traer un calendario de diciembre a clase. Repase los días de la semana. También repase los números del Puede hacer un pequeño juego llamado Hoy, Ayer y Mañana. Haga suficientes copias del calendario para toda la clase. Pregúnteles que día es hoy. Continue preguntándoles sobre mañana y también sobre ayer. Continue el juego pero utilizando fechas de diciembre. Por ejemplo qué día es el dos de diciembre? Ellos deben responder el día de la semana al que corresponde la fecha. También puede preguntarles que día es el veinticuatro y el veinticinco. Haga esto por quince minutos. Proceda a los cumpleaños. Pregúntele a la clase quién cumple años en diciembre? Pídale a la clase que anote los cumpleaños en el calendario. Si tienen familiares que cumplen años también puede inclúirlos en el calendario. Luego Pregúntele a la clase Qué fiestas hay en diciembre? Es su oportunidad de explicarles sobre : Nochebuena (la noche del 24 de diciembre) Navidad (25 de diciembre) Nochevieja (31 de diciembre) Año Nuevo (primero de enero) Hable de sus tradiciones navideñas. Comparta un poco de cosas que se hacen para Navidad y Año Nuevo. Pídale a los alumnos que piensen en sus tradiciones y que para la clase próxima estén listos para compartir sus fiestas. Instrucciones 1. Distribuya en clase la hoja llamada : Mi Celebración Explíquele a la clase lo que tiene que hacer. NOMBRE DE LA FIESTA (Navidad, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, DIVALI) Cuando escriban el nombre pídales que usen el de y su nombre. Por ejemplo Navidades de Juana FECHA- Aquí tienen que colocar la fecha exacta. Por ejemplo Navidad se celebra en los países látinos el 24 de diciembre no el 25 como en América. HORA- Explíqueles que hay celebraciones que duran todo el día como la Navidad en América donde los niños esperan los presentes el 25 de diciembre al levantarse pues Papá Noel los deja la nochebuena. La celebración continúa con almuerzos especiales En países latinoaméricanos la cena navideña es primero y luego a la medianoche para aquellos que estén despiertos los regalos se abren el 24 de diciembre a la medianoche. CLIMA Recuérdeles que en Latino América no existe una blanca Navidad. Más bien es Navidad con calor. Las temperaturas oscilan entre 70 y 95 grados Fahrenheit. Pídales que elijan que les gusta más de los siguientes climás. Escríbalos en la pizarra. Además pídales que le den la temperatura ideal en Fahrenheit. Por ejemplo la menorah es un símbolo de Hanukkah. El árbol navideño o el pesebre son símbolos de la Navidad. Papá Noel es también otro símbolo de la época navideña. MI SIMBOLO ES- Aquí deben de describir el símbolo que dibujaron. La descripión debe inclúir el nombre. No sólo deben describir los colores del símbolo pero también que se hace con él. Nombre del símbolo (árbol, velas, ornamento, pesebre, estrella, Papá Noel) Color y forma del símbolo Lugar de la casa donde se coloca el símbolo (otras opciones es pasíllo o baño) Sala Comedor Balcón Patio Cocina Jardin ACTIVIDADES FAVORITAS Pídales que piensen cuales son sus actividades favoritas de Navidad, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa o Divali o cualquier otra fiesta que describen. Deben eligir un mínimos de cuatro. Convierta el proyecto en la nota de presentación de los estudiantes. Escoga cinco alumnos cada día en la últimás semanas antes del feriado navideño. Permítales que traigan fotos o símbolos a la clase. Déles cinco minutos para presentar su celebración a todos. Repítalo hasta que toda la clase lo haga. Actividades en Grupos Pequeños 1. Divida a los alumnos en grupos de cuatro. 2. Pedirle a cada grupo que compartan sus celebración unos con otros 3. Cada grupo puede crear una lista de cosas en común de sus celebraciones. 4. Repártales una hoja en blanco para que cada grupo haga una nueva celebración integrando elementos de cada persona del grupo. 5. Déles tiempo a cada grupo para presentar la nueva Celebración dando Nombre, fecha, símbolos, actividades y colores. 6. La clase elige el símbolo que representa mejor a la clase. 9

10 Actividades Futuras 1. Haga un calendario el primer día de cada mes. Cuente con la clase los números del 1-30 o al 31 dependiendo del mes. También puede decir el día de la semana y hacer que ellos le digan el número. Por ejemplo Lunes (uno), martes (dos). Así van a recordar al menos cada mes los días de la semana y la fecha. 2. Una vez terminado coloque en la pizarra las fiestas del mes por ejemplo en Enero resalte: Año Nuevo, Los Reyes Magos, El Día de Martin Luther King. Una vez haga esto explíqueles si se celebran en Latinoamérica o no. También preguntele a la clase si hacen algo especial para celebrar las distintas fiestas. 3. Proceda a anotar todos los cumpleaños de la clase. Pregúnteles quién cumple años durante ese mes en la clase? Cante con ellos Feliz Cumpleaños. 4. Repita la actividad cada mes. Al final del año escolar. Haga que le entregue todos los calendarios y déles una nota. 10
