2 DCSD Seeks Parent Input on Code of Conduct The District is seeking input from parents on the Code of Student Conduct, Student Rights and Responsibilities, and Character Development Handbook. The Code of Student Conduct Handbook is intended to inform student in grades K 12 of the types of behaviors that are unacceptable. Students are taught and tested on the contents of the handbook. A copy of the current Handbook is available in all DeKalb schools and at in English, Burmese, Nepali and Spanish. Copias del manual actual del ano están disponible en todas las escuela del condado de DeKalb y también por Internet en la pagina del distrito escolar en inglés, español, y otros idiomas mas. -relations Page 2 Dear Parents, Friday morning of last week, Henderson Mill Elementary School welcomed over 30 teachers and administrators from across and outside the metro Atlanta area into our building. Although this may not seem like an unusual occurrence, it really is. Educators came from as close as Henderson Middle and as far away as North Fulton, North Gwinnett, and even Rome City Schools. Each of them spent well over 2 hours in our building finding out about what it means to be a STEM school, how we seamlessly integrate our Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math into our lessons and activities in order to provide our students an opportunity to go beyond the standard curriculum, to think critically and innovatively, and to devise connections to real-world, relevant work that is fun, interesting, and engaging. These visitors got a chance to see our third grade students building Maglev trains, our second graders gathering data from a parachute drop, and our fourth graders working with technology and geometric models in math. Every grade, Pre-K through 5 th, was actively engaging in STEM work. Our visitors saw our trout that are almost ready for release into the Chattahoochee, our outdoor gardens, and the STEM lab. For the last half hour of the tour, our STEM committee members fielded endless questions about data, business partners, staff buy-in, enrollment, and parent engagement, to name but a few. Prior to the visitors arriving, I had a chance to address the students on our Friday morning news show, HMES-TV. I spoke to them about what a truly remarkable thing this is, educators taking time away from teaching to come and see our school. Of all the many places that they could go and see, they chose to come see us. That says a lot to me about the great things that we have going on at Henderson Mill, and it should say something to you as well. The fact is, we do this every month, and I dare say that we could probably fill up a tour of educators once a week if we had the desire to do so. There is hardly a week that goes by that I personally don t get an or two and a phone call asking about how one school or another might be allowed to send some folks over despite the fact that our tours are all booked for the remainder of the year. For me, this is a point of pride. I know it is for our teachers and our students, an opportunity to share our experiences and success with others. It should be a point of pride for you as well. Remind your children just how special this place is and how fortunate they are to attend such a great school. Talk to your neighbors who don t have elementary school-age children and even those who choose to send their children elsewhere. Let them know that they have a great thing right in their backyard, and how, through our combined efforts we can continue to make it even better. Thank you for your continued support of Henderson Mill through your donations to the Foundation, through your volunteer work with PTA, and for coming to great events like our Fine Arts night. We truly depend upon our partnership with you, the parents of our community and appreciate all that you do to make HMES a great place to be. Aunque esto puede parecer no fuera de lo común, en realidad lo es. Los educadores llegaron a una distancia tan cerca como Henderson Middle y lugares tan lejanos como el norte de Fulton, el lado norte de Gwinnett, incluso escuelas de la cuidad de Rome. Cada uno de ellos pasaron más de 2 horas en nuestro edificio para conocer acerca de lo que significa ser una escuela STEM, cómo integrar nuestra Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas en nuestras clases y actividades con el fin de ofrecer a nuestros estudiantes la oportunidad de ir más allá del plan de estudios estándar, y pensar de manera crítica y innovadora, y para diseñar las conexiones con el mundo real, el trabajo relevante que es divertido, interesante y atractiva. Estos visitantes tuvieron la oportunidad de ver a nuestros estudiantes de tercer grado construir trenes de Maglev, nuestros alumnos de segundo grado juntar datos para una caída en paracaídas, y nuestros estudiantes de cuarto grado trabajando con la tecnología y los modelos geométricos en las matemáticas. Cada grado, Pre -K hasta quinto, estaba participando activamente haciendo diferentes actividades de STEM. Nuestros visitantes vieron nuestras truchas que están casi listos para su liberación en el Rio Chattahoochee, nuestros jardines al aire libre, y el laboratorio de STEM. Para la última media hora de la visita, nuestros miembros del comité STEM enviaron interminables preguntas sobre datos, socios comerciales, la inscripción y participación de los padres, por nombrar sólo unos pocos. Para mí, esto es un motivo de orgullo. Yo sé que lo es para nuestros profesores y nuestros estudiantes, una oportunidad para compartir nuestras experiencias y éxitos con los demás. Hable con sus vecinos que no tienen niños en edad escolar de primaria y incluso aquellos que deciden enviar a sus hijos a otra parte. Hágales saber que tienen una gran cosa a la derecha en su patio trasero, y cómo, a través de nuestros esfuerzos combinados que pueden seguir para que sea aún mejor. 4 Reminder: Tomorrow, March 28 8:30-1pm Pre-K Lottery Pre-K lottery for children that turn 4 years old on or before September 1 will be tomorrow, March 28 between 8am-1pm. All children not chosen will be placed in a waiting pool until spaces become available. Schools continue to accept applications for the waiting pool after the lottery utilization, if and when space becomes available in the class. 5 Calendar Changes Resulting From Snow Days The biggest news: CRCT testing has been rescheduled by DeKalb County. The new dates are: Apr 22 May 1. Please mark your calendars for this change. While only third through fifth graders take the test; support of the entire school is needed to help maintain conditions conducive to testing. Tonight, Thurs, Mar 27, 7-9pm at Tucker High School Parent Councils United Town Hall Meeting Please Join ELPC and Parent Councils United for this special evening event. Parent Councils United is comprised of leaders from Dunwoody Chamblee Parent Council, Emory LaVista Parent Council, South DeKalb Parent Council, Tucker Parent Council, and the Cross Keys Cluster who are working together for a quality public education for all children in DeKalb County. ***This event is in lieu of the previously advertised ELPC March 19 Avondale Elementary meeting!*** The April meeting, State of the System, Revisited with Superintendent Michael Thurmond, will run as scheduled on April 16 th at Lakeside High School. See attached revised calendar page for April. May will be included in the April 17 th issue. 7 Registration for School Year New students can register by appointment only on May 6, 8, 13, 15, 20 and 22 between 8:30-10:30am. Parents must call the office ( ) to make a 15 minute appointment. Returning students (and new students who miss the May dates) can register Mon-Thurs from 9am-3pm between July st. Note that the office is closed on Fridays. (Registering returning students is easy: You just need current proof of residency (after July 1 st ) and parent photo ID.) Aug 6, 2014 Open House Registration details will be announced later. Documents needed for first time registrants: The registrar must have all documents to register your child. Please arrange documents in this order: 1. Immunization Certificate (Ga form 3231) Children entering kindergarten or any grade in Georgia for the first time, or who have been absent from a Georgia school more than a school year, must have two (2) doses of MMR and two (2) doses of Varicella (or proof of serologic immunity or disease documented) 2. Birth Certificate (Original with seal, we will copy) 3. Hearing, Vision, Dental Certificates (Ga Form 3300) These can be on one form or separate forms 4. Proof of residence or Notarized residence affidavit. Acceptable proof of residence: Signed lease, utility bill (water, gas, electric) or mortgage statement. You may need to bring updated info again because the school will need current info (after July 1, 2014) at the start of the school year. 5. Social Security card (we will copy) or signed and Notarized waiver 6. Parent photo ID *NOTE At the start of the school year current proof of residency is needed. So if you registered prior to July 1 st you will need to bring proof of residency as of July 1, 2014 again at the start of the school year.
