1 School District of Arcadia NEWSLETTER From Your Superintendent Using Social Media to Communicate with the World-One Person at a Time! Beginning in the school year you will be noticing some changes to the way we will communicate with our district residents. We will begin using electronic newsletters posted on our website. We will continue to offer the newsletter in hard copy. There are more details in this newsletter if that is the option you choose. We will also start using social media more as we go forward. The social media may come in the form of Facebook or Twitter. Why should we begin using this tool? 1. Parent communication-our instructors already are required to have a web presence to improve communication between students, parents, and instructors. Social media will allow us to disseminate information in real-time to parents and students. 2. Community outreach-social media will be used as a tool to communicate between the district and parents. This is a great opportunity to communicate back and forth very quickly with a large portion of our parents and citizens. 3. Networking with colleagues-our instructors can share projects and best practices online 24/7. 4. Integrating real-world application into teaching-this opportunity offers global interaction with our students and teachers. 5. Two way communication-we will use social media to promote various activities, gain feedback, or start conversations for various topics that are important to the school and the Arcadia School District residents. This is a great opportunity to showcase all the positive things our students are doing in classes and co-curricular activities. Please read information below about receiving your future newsletters to improve the partnership between the Arcadia School District, its parents, residents, and the entire world. Thank you for your continued support of the Arcadia School District and its students. As always, my door is always open to you and I can be reached at or fergusonl@arcadia.k12.wi.us. Juniors If students are considering continuing their education beyond high school, they should be taking the ACT or other assessment tests applicable to the schools they are looking into. Contact the individual college for more information. Test Date April 12, ACT Schedule Registration Deadline Standby testing only June 14, 2014 May 9, 2014 Late registration is available at an extra charge. Pre-College Summer Programs These programs are offered at the UW campuses and cover a wide array of subjects from computer to basketball camps, from music and art to cheerleading and study skills. They are offered for varying age groups from pre-kindergarten through high school. Many of the academic programs offer scholarship assistance. For information on Pre-College Programs in Wisconsin go to Attention Parents of the Class of 2016 Why pay over $150 to a local institution for ACT prep, when you can send your student to teachers with whom they are familiar at no personal cost to you? This summer, AHS will be offering an ACT Prep course taught by Mrs. Lettner and Mrs. Sommerfeldt. The instructors will offer practical test-taking strategies and the opportunity to practice them. There will also be direct instruction provided based on the areas of the most need. For students to gain the full benefits, attendance at every class meeting is strongly recommended. 3 Free, public screening of nationally acclaimed documentary Who Cares About Kelsey? at Arcadia High School Auditorium at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, April 30th The Arcadia School District in conjunction with the Trempealeau County National Alliance on Mental Illness, will host a community screening of the new documentary film, Who Cares About Kelsey? on Wednesday, April 30th at 6:00 pm in the Arcadia High School Auditorium. This free, public screening will be followed by a community discussion regarding mental health. Who Cares About Kelsey? has been featured in Education Week and WBUR and has been screened at film festivals, national conferences and school districts around the country. FILM SYNOPSIS: Kelsey Carroll has one goal to graduate from high school and plenty of reasons why she shouldn't. She attends a school with one of the highest dropout rates in New Hampshire and has dealt with homelessness, sexual abuse, and ADHD. As a freshman, she didn't earn a single academic credit, but she did get suspended for dealing drugs. Who Cares About Kelsey? is the story of Kelsey's transformation from a defiant and disruptive problem student to a motivated and self-confident young woman. Along the way, critical figures in her personal and educational life shape her coming of age and play important roles in an education revolution that's about empowering not overpowering youth with emotional and behavioral challenges. Nationally, more than two million young people in the United States have emotional/ behavioral disabilities (EBD). Youth with EBD have the worst graduation rate of all students with disabilities. Nationally, only 40 percent of students with EBD graduate from high school, compared to the national average of 76 percent of all students. Join us on April 30th to hear how we can improve outcomes for students with emotional and behavioral needs. To reserve tickets contact Courtney Smith at , ext: Tickets are free and will also be available at the door the evening of the screening. To learn more about the film and view the trailer, go to: Newsletter article adopted from Who Cares About Kelsey website press release. 4-Year Old Preschool Program (PALS) Registration The annual PALS registration will be held on Friday, May 2 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Parents are reminded to bring the following with them on the day of registration: BIRTH OR BAPTISMAL CERTIFICATE, COMPLETED PALS REGISTRATION SHEET, AND IMMUNIZATION RECORD. 4 Educator of the Year-Carol Rumpel PASSION This is one word that describes Carol Rumpel, Educator of the Year. She has a zest for life and her enthusiasm for learning is contagious in the classroom. Her students feed off of it! Carol understands the importance of meeting the needs of all of her students. She spends endless hours at school, differentiating her lessons to accommodate for the numerous learning styles that are in her classroom. Most of Words from our Top Notch Teacher all, Carol is a very thoughtful person. She takes her job very seriously and her students know that she cares for their well-being and education. Carol was also nominated by a past parent and chosen by WKBT-News 8 as Top Notch Teacher of the Month for November and was able to drive a Honda Insight Hybrid for the entire month of November. Thank you to everyone involved. I was completely surprised and cannot express the amount of gratitude that I have from the day I heard the announcement that I was nominated for Top Notch Teacher and then again for Educator of the year. I have had many jobs in my lifetime; waitress, dishwasher, EMT, Computer Programmer, Merchandise Manager, milkmaid, towboat mate, barmaid, swim instructor, but my career as a teacher began with two events. First was a phone call from Kenny Salwey, The River Rat, and Mr. Wald, principal from CFC, asking me to be a part of a Talk Walkers group. We traveled about Wisconsin, working with teachers on the importance of learning experiences in nature. During this Talk Walking experience, Kenny and Mr. Wald had convinced me that I needed to be an educator so I could share my passion for life, my experiences and to awaken the natural curiosity of learning with the how to look for answers along the way. It was soon after this when Mr. Wald hired me as a Library and computer aide in the Cochrane-Fountain City school district and then encouraged me to go back to college for my teaching degree, which I did. It was not easy. I was a parent, a part time student, and I worked part-time (I was working here in the Arcadia School District, as a library and computer aide) and it was during this time that the second event took place that would change my life forever; my daughter, Cassandra s death. This devastating event gave me two options; to stay frozen in time or to live and carry on. The first would have probably been the easiest and to be honest I felt like I had already stopped living and had nothing left to live for, except for something my grandmother said to me; Now is not to the time to be selfish. Somebody needs what you have to give. People need encouragement, your time, a listening ear, your strong will and your smile. With that I decided to finish what I started and what my daughter would never be able to do, and that was to graduate. I graduated with my teaching degree the same year she would have finished high school, moved on to technology coordinator, then to third grade 4 teacher second and third grade looping teacher and now to fifth. Being an active listener and responding to the needs of my students, coworkers and family was my mission but little did I know that it would be my students that gave me vision and remind me just how little I actually know. I have to remember that we bend, but we do not break; that the biggest challenges shape us and form us; our expectations leave us with better accomplishments when we finally let go and trust that it will all come together in time. Those of you who know me will know that I cannot accept this award without saying there are so many people in our school district that are just as deserving of this award as I am. None of us gets to be good at what we do without help. So I thought back to the people who have helped me along the way. I have been fortunate to have the best of mentors: Mrs. Karla Johnson, and Cami Pietrek, my cooperating teachers during student teaching, Mrs. Frost, Tom Nelson, Jeri Deninger, Julie Duffrin and my third grade team and the people who help get you through your day your colleagues, the support staff who make you laugh and (Continued on page 5)

5 wonder and Chris Hannon and the secretaries; who really help you to know the things you never knew you needed to know. I also have to acknowledge the volunteers, businesses and families in our community for your support, s I am a better person because of them. There is one last part of MY teaching family that deserves to be recognized. To my family, my bonus children: Kelly, Kyle, Gina and my daughter, Cheyanne. Thank you for helping me correct papers, and making sure I don t spend every minute at school and mostly for just going with the flow for coming to school to help me even the times when you so kindly pointed out a lesson I was working on was lame I thank you with all my heart. To my husband Dave, who believed in me, long before I believed in myself. Without you, the Rumpel Bunch would not thrive in the way it does. I remember on my first day of teaching you made sure that I had my first day of school picture taken just like the rest of the kids. I also remember asking you to help with taking over cooking dinner for the family and for always doing the things that needed to be done and for that I am grateful beyond words. And finally to my Grandparents, Mom and Dad, my brothers and extended family; thanks for instilling me with creative curiosity and putting up with me while growing up. While receiving awards is certainly humbling and motivating, and the recognition is appreciated; I would like to close with this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson: To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest citizens and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give of one s self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived this is to have succeeded. Thank you very much. Love and Laughter Always, Carol Rumpel Special Performance The Cat s Pajamas On February 13th, Arcadia High School had a very special guest. The Cat's Pajamas put on a stellar performance that rocked the auditorium! This a capella group is originally from Madison, WI, but currently reside in Branson, MO where they perform nightly. Their high-energy show got the entire crowd on their feet to dance and sing along! The show was opened by GET's Vocal Point and AHS' Adam's Family. The Cat's Pajamas are in the middle of their "Music In Schools Tour" and helped the AHS Choir raise over $500! Thank you, Cat's Pajamas, and we hope to have you back here next year! 6 Jump Rope for Heart 2014 On February 14, 2014 approximately 520 students at Arcadia Elementary School participated in Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH). It was enjoyed by all the students. money the students raise each year. We use these gift certificates to buy equipment for our classrooms or the next year s event. JRFH raises money for kids and adults with special hearts. This event also teaches our students to help others in need and it promotes physical activity by participating in fun rope jumping tricks and other jumping activities including a bounce house which is an all time favorite of the students. This event would not be possible without the help of many different people. Thank you to all of the students for raising the money to donate on our behalf to the American Heart Association and for doing a great job jumping at the event. A special Thank You goes out to the volunteers for helping with anything from twirling rope, helping students and taking pictures. We greatly appreciate your time. And last but not least a great big thank you goes out to McDonalds for the apples and Kwik Trip for the bottles of water that they donated as a nutritious snack. This year s goal was to beat our total of $13, (2013 total) and with great pride and enthusiasm our students took on the challenge. This year we had 330 students raise money for JRFH but were unable to beat that total. This year s amount raised was just over $12, The top fundraisers this year, once again, are Kianna Suchla raising $350.00, Zachary Konkel $260.00, Jack, Kealey & Kenndy Zeigeweid $256.00, Trace Weihrouch $250.00, Kadin Papenfuss $ and Sky Reit. Congratulations to these students and all the students who raised money for a great cause. The P.E. Department also receives gift certificates from the American Heart Association based on the amount of 6 Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Colleen Sobotta and Jen Gray
