1 POGAMA ENAIVO Yale University Department of Spanish and Portuguese Summer Session Program in Lima, Peru SPAN S-130: Intermediate Spanish I (L3) Summer ENAIVO Instructors: Dr. osamaria León rosamaria.leon@yale.edu office #215 (203) Dr. erry Seymour terry.seymour@yale.edu office #416 (203) Materials (all materials are available at the Yale Bookstore unless otherwise indicated): a) extbook packet: the loose-leaf edition of Enfoques (3 rd ed.) plus the Supersite Plus Code with WebSAM, ISBN , at Yale Bookstore: $210. b) Course Packet for SPAN S-130, obtainable at yco (262 Elm St, near York St.). c) A good Spanish-English dictionary (Oxford, Larousse, etc.). 2.- Program Description: SPAN S-130 is an intensive, intermediate I Spanish course that meets 14 hours a week for 4 weeks (3 hrs. and 40 min. three times a week and 1hr and 30 min. two times a week) from Monday May 30, 2016 to hursday June 23, here will be no class on Friday June 24, so that students can prepare for travel to Lima. he class is conducted entirely in Spanish. Proficiency will be developed by integrating grammar and vocabulary in writing and communicative activities. Other activities are based on Spanish-language films and readings from Peruvian and other Latin American authors. At the end of this course, most students reach the ACFL level of Advanced Mid in all four areas. In SPAN130, students learn vocabulary about personal relations, pastimes, daily life, health, vacations, and nature; review important grammar points, such as ser/estar, gustar, preterit /imperfect, commands, por/para, the subjunctive, and the future; and also learn cultural information relevant to Peru. Students who do not pass SPAN130 will not be allowed to take SPAN140. his course is part of a Yale summer study abroad program that includes an intermediate II course (SPAN S-140) in the month of July at the Universidad del Pacífico in Lima, Peru as well as a cultural course (SPAN S-247) that will take place during both June and July. All three courses must be taken as a unit --they cannot be taken individually. his program admits to L5. his program is not open to students who have already taken SPAN 130 or 140, or an equivalent. otal credits: 4. Students may not leave Peru before Friday, July Course Policies: A.- Attendance: egular attendance is crucial to the successful attainment of the course objectives. Students must attend classes on a daily basis and they may not miss any scheduled evaluations and/or homework. Please note that there are no Dean s excuses during the summer. If you must miss class due to illness, you must notify your instructor within 24 hours and arrange homework and make-ups for missing work. hree late arrivals of 15 minutes or more will be considered one absence. If there are excessive absences or late arrivals, students will be asked to withdraw from the program. he final course grade will be lowered 2% per each unexcused absence beyond one. to lower the grade accordingly or take other measures. here will be no make-ups due to unexcused absences. 1

2 POGAMA ENAIVO B.- Grading: he final grade, which will not be curved, will be calculated as follows: Participation (1) 15% Homework and classwork 20% Oral exam (1) 10% Midterm exam (1) 20% Final exam (1) 25% Oral abilities in class 10% A = A- = B+ = B = B- = C+ = C = C- = D+ = D = D- = F = below 60 C.- Plagiarism: It is considered plagiarism to use other s work without properly citing it or with the purpose of making it pass as your own. It is considered unethical to have someone do your work for you. D.- Miscellaneous: a) Classesv2 will be used for communication and course management. b) At the end of the semester, there will be evaluations for you to fill out and give feedback about the program. Please feel free to provide any suggestions or feedback during the program as well to your instructors or the Yale Summer Session director, Kelly McLaughlin. c) If you have having difficulty with the course material, ask your instructors for help. here will be no tutors available at the Center for Language Study during the summer. d) If there is an emergency and you cannot attend class, you should your instructors ASAP. 5.- Course Components: a) Participation: his refers to the student s willingness to participate actively in class raising his/her hand spontaneously when the instructor asks for volunteers, and to contribute with interesting comments and/or questions. It also includes his/her preparation for class (as indicated in the syllabus), his/her use of Spanish, and miscellaneous issues such as arriving on time, not leaving before the end of class, not using the phone for non- class related activities, focusing, appropriate behavior with others, etc. In the interest of stimulating conversation, some controversial topics will be discussed in the course. You are encouraged to present, explain and defend either your own views or views you think might engage your classmates. You are not expected to agree with the views of your instructors, nor will your grade depend in any way on the views you choose to express. b) Oral Abilities in Class: his refers to your grammatical accuracy, use of vocabulary, fluency, and pronunciation. See the Course Packet for a rubric. c) Homework and Preparation: Preparation is essential for success in the course, so it is recommended that you read ahead and that you do your homework on time. Homework includes workbook, lab work (both can be found on the Supersite online platform) and any other assignment given by your instructor (videos, articles, short paragraphs, etc.). Due to the intensive nature of the program, homework may take 2 hours a day. Workbook and lab work will be accepted one day late, but with a 50% penalty. o sign up in the Supersite, click HEE. d) Quizzes: here may be unannounced quizzes at the discretion of the instructors in order to check vocabulary, comprehension of reading or a grammar point. hese will be evaluated as part of the class participation grade. 2
