2 Carole s Corner: Self-Advocacy Learning & Training (SALT) By Carole Horan Late last summer I received a correspondence from someone who told me he always looked forward to reading my column. Well, you can imagine that got my attention! So after some s back and forth I finally met with them, twice, and I would like this month to introduce you to a group which meets here on the Near Westside but serves a much larger area. Also, I would like to share with you that one of the members is a young man I came to know very well a few years ago and it was such a pleasant surprise to see him there! SALT is part of the Self-Advocacy Association of NY State; there are 200 regional groups in the state. This particular Self-Advocacy group meets in the Rockwest Building, 1005 W. Fayette St., Suite 1A on Mondays 10:30 12, unless there is a holiday. Their goal is to help people with developmental disabilities learn to speak up for themselves and others. They learn about their rights and teach others with a motto of: Nothing about us without us! It is conducted entirely by citizens with developmental disabilities with assistance from staff from the regional office of Office of People with Developmental Disabilities. When I visited they were all busy talking about and planning 28th Annual Central New York Self-Advocacy Conference. More information about that later. It was a very spirited meeting as they reviewed several of the past conference titles and played around with some ideas for the upcoming conference. Ideas were tossed back and forth with explanations as necessary. They began to bounce ideas around for workshops and a couple of members took on the task of preparing a workshop or asking someone else to do so. Names of possible keynote speakers were tossed around. They encouraged each other to lead portions of this event. Then some time was spent discussing the theme for March ~~ Spread the Word. This is a program which will be presented to high school and college students. The important message that will be sent is the disrespect of using the R word. They offer an opportunity after the presentation for students to sign a pledge. You can find more information about this program if you go to: I did and it is very interesting. The main reason they wanted me to introduce them to you is that this group, SALT, is hoping that if there are any citizens with developmental disabilities living on the Near Westside and they are interesting in learning how to stand up for themselves, they are most welcome any Monday to come to a meeting. I know they made me feel very welcome at their meetings, you would too. 3 West Street Improvements Continued... pedestrian and bicycle amenities, which enhance safety. There may be an audible cheer floating across the City from Near Westside residents when that chain-link fence comes down, traffic is slowed, parking is available and bicycles appear on West Street, said Marilyn Higgins, vice president of Community Engagement and Economic Development at Syracuse University. We are very grateful to the New York State Department of Transportation, the City of Syracuse and our New York State representatives for listening to the concerns of the neighbors and problem solving every week for months to make this happen. Beginning this May and continuing into later 2014, the following work elements will be performed on West Street by the NYSDOT, the City of Syracuse Department of Public Works and by the City s contractors: A four-foot high decorative fence will be installed in the median between Fabius Street and the CSX railroad overpass. The see-through fence is intended to direct pedestrians crossing West Street to the signalized intersections at Fabius and West Fayette Streets. New concrete sidewalks with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant curb ramps at several locations will be installed along the right side of southbound West Street between Gifford and Marcellus Streets. Sidewalk and curb restoration will also take place adjacent to northbound West Street and at other locations where appropriate. After the installation of the southbound sidewalk, the right-of-way fencing will be removed. Vehicular access to/from Marcellus Street will be eliminated. An opening in the island separating the northbound travel lanes and the northbound service road will be made at Jefferson Street, allowing trucks to access northbound West Street (and I-690) without having to make a U-turn. Deep pavement and joint repairs will be done in both directions as needed in advance of a milling and resurfacing project between Shonnard and West Fayette Streets. Upon completion of the pavement restoration work, both directions of West Street will be reduced from three lanes to two lanes between West Fayette and Seymour Streets. Signs and new pavement markings will direct motorists accordingly. The reduced lane will allow for limited parking and is also a traffic calming measure. The northbound service road will be resurfaced as well, and reconfigured into a lane for northbound trucks and a separate cycle track, which will extend past the CSX overpass and provide access into Armory Square. In mid to late 2015, a new, signalized mid-block crossing of West Street will be constructed at Otisco Street. While many of the details have yet to be determined, this new mid-block crossing will be synchronized with the (upgraded) signal at West Fayette Street, giving southbound motorists advance visual notice of when the crossing is being used. A protected area in the island between the northbound and southbound directions will provide pedestrians a refuge while crossing West Street. These enhancements are being made possible with a combination of state grant and multi-modal funding sources. The total cost of the work, exclusive of the upgraded signal at West Fayette Street, is just under $1 million. I was pleased to assist in securing funding for this project, said State Senator David J. Valesky. By bringing multiple stakeholders together to discuss the issues involved, the community as a whole will benefit through a safer and more accessible West Street Corrridor. Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli said, I am pleased to secure state funding for a variety of streetscape improvements to the West Street corridor. Enhancing pedestrian infrastructure provides the essentials for a walkable neighborhood, which will be an important factor in improving the quality of life in and around the near West Side. 4 SALTQuarters Brings Photographer to the NWS By Jessica Iannetta SALTQuarters trae fotógrafo al NWS Por Jessica Iannetta A photographer from Seattle, who wants to share her skills and knowledge with Syracuse students and residents, recently began her tenure as the SALTQuarters third artist in residence. Colleen Woolpert, who started her six-month residency in January, said she plans to hold workshops at local schools as well as create a series of participatory art exhibits. Through these events, Woolpert said she hopes to connect to the community and be actively involved in Near Westside life. I m trying to work with people in the neighborhood and use resources in the neighborhood. That s a way to connect, she said. You know just be involved and hang out with people. Woolpert s arrival also marks the halfway point in the program s first year. Although program coordinators and the artists involved said the first six months have gone well, they noted that steps need to be taken to get the artists to meet more Near Westside residents as well as land more grant money to continue the program. Started in July 2013, the SALTQuarters artist in residence program provides a yearlong residency to a local artist and a six-month residency to a national artist from outside Central New York. The two artists are each given a stipend to cover the materials needed for their art as well as other miscellaneous expenses. The local and national artists also share a studio and apartment in the newly renovated SALTQuarters building on Otisco Street on Syracuse s Near Westside. John Cardone, a sculptor, is halfway through his year-long tenure as the SALTQuarters first local artist. Woolpert will take the place of Peter Edlund, a Brooklyn-based painter who finished his six-month residency in December. SALTQuarters received over 30 applications when it put out an open call last year to fill the one local artist and two national artist slots, said Stacey Lindbloom, coordinator of the artist in residency program. Going forward, Lindbloom said SALTQuarters will be partnering with 601 Tully an art center a few blocks away from the SALTQuarters building to choose the artists. But more immediately, Lindbloom said SALTQuarters is seeking grants to support the program. SALTQuarters is halfway through a two-year grant from ArtPlace, a foundation whose mission is to use art to benefit local communities. SALTQuarters has used the money to renovate its Otisco Street building and support three artists, Lindbloom said. It s these finances that will enable Woolpert to continue her work, which explores how people interpret visual information. During her tenure at SALTQuarters, Woolpert will present a three-part exhibit titled Persistence of Vision. The exhibits will feature video work and installations as well as a participatory element, Woolpert said. The first of these exhibits, called Blink, will open in March and have a strobe light dance party, she added. She also plans to use pre-cinematic tools such as the stereograph (early 3-D photography) and the mutoscope, a coin operated flip-book that was invented on the Near Westside, to educate local students about the concept of binocular vision or the ability to see in 3-D. From a young age, Woolpert became interested in how people see the world. At the age of 10, she learned that her twin sister didn t have binocular vision. She couldn t experience the same world that I did because she lacked 3-D or binocular vision, Woolpert said. So I think it was in part an empathy for her and wanting to understand how we could be twins but have such different experiences of the world. While Woolpert is moving to Syracuse from Seattle, this is not her first time in the Salt City. 5 SALTQuarters Continued... Cardone applied for the residency as a way to stay in a city he has come to know very well during the last few years. Cardone graduated from SU with a degree in sculpture in 2012 and then worked for 601 Tully for a year before accepting the local artist residency. He hopes to leave his mark on the Near Westside using spray-paint. His biggest project involves tracing the routes of 12 pedestrians as they walk around the Near Westside. Eventually, he wants to spray paint their paths on the sidewalk, he said. If they let me do it, it will be the largest piece of public art ever installed in the city of Syracuse, which is why they don t want to let me do it, Cardone said with a laugh. Another of his projects is a workshop with local high school students about Syracuse life hacks, or tips for living and working in Syracuse. In addition, he s also working on building a scale model of Syracuse out of Legos that will be displayed with extra Legos around it so Syracuse residents can add to the model. Cardone noted that the residency is different because it allows artists to really be immersed in a community. It s rare to be able to live in a place where you work, he said. Free Youth Program at WCNY During Spring Break WCNY is offering school break programs as well as a program that focuses on the story of Central New York s Jewish population during the month of April. This program is perfect for pre-k through third graders. Celebrate Earth Day on Tuesday, April 22 at 1:00 p.m. with a Create a Mini-Zip Line program, where elementary through middle school age students can make a tiny zip line out of recycled materials to send small objects zipping along! The zip lines can be taken home to extend the fun. On Wednesday, April 23 at 3 p.m. WCNY offers Trying on Success, a special program for teens that guides them in how to create winning clothing combinations for job and college interviews or even to wear to work. Members of Fashion Conscience, SU s first and only minority based fashion organization on campus, will provide the expert advice. Public tours of WCNY are being offered on Thursday April 24 at 10 and 11 a.m., and 1 and 2 p.m. The tours are free, but you must register at as tour space is limited. Sit, Stay, Read! a Clifford the Big Red Dog story time is being offered at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 25. Our community has been enriched by the many different ethnic groups that have chosen it as their home. On Sunday, April 6 at 2 p.m. in the WCNY Education Center, stories of Central New York s Jews will be shared. We ll hear from a Holocaust survivor who was one of 982 refugees that lived in a World War II refugee camp in Oswego and how that refugee experience is being remembered at the Safe Haven Museum and Education Center; a man who lived in Syracuse s 15th Ward during the time that the construction of Rt. 81 changed the neighborhood forever; and two authors who collected photographs and stories focused on the history of Syracuse s Jewish population. 6 The Alchemical Nursery: Working to Bring Eco-Friendly Living to the Near Westside History and Overview Due to long work hours, busy family schedules, and other outside commitments, it is unlikely that many people have time to worry about where their food is coming from or how it is made. However, because of a growing awareness of the modern farming industry and its potential dangers to our health and the environment, it is important that we stay updated on the best techniques for ensuring that we are purchasing the most wholesome and nutritious food for ourselves and our families. In an effort to prevent environmental harm and unhealthy food consumption, Frank Cetera co-founded the Alchemical Nursery in 2008, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting permaculture (a system of agriculture designed to be self-sufficient and ecologically friendly) in urban settings of Syracuse. Through community gardens, residents will be able to further control their resources, including food and water, therefore giving residents the power to choose more eco-friendly alternatives to the traditional, more environmentally harmful options. Frank and the Alchemical Nursery team, consisting of six board members and countless volunteers, work to educate the community about the benefits of permaculture, along with offering hands-on experience to volunteers whom wish to become involved in this effort. A major goal of the organization is to create eco-villages in Syracuse, which include ecological design, permaculture, green production, alternative energy, etc., and sustain themselves while causing as little impact to the environment as possible and promoting healthier lifestyles. Current & Upcoming Projects The Alchemical Nursery has created a total of four permaculture sites (community gardens) in the Syracuse area. These include a garden on the South Side on the Rahma Health Clinic s property, a garden at 717 Otisco Street in the Near Westside, a garden on the corner of Oswego Street and Fayette Street where planting has occurred between the side walk and the road, and a garden in the backyard of the Syracuse Real Food Coop in the Westcott area. In the planning stages of implementing the gardens, the Alchemical Nursery conducted a survey of ethnic and cultural backgrounds in the area in order to plant foods which are culturally aligned with the communities. The organization has also implemented a campaign entitled 1$ for Permaculture which invites potential donors to give one dollar per month to the Alchemical Nursery in an effort to maintain and increase free food forest resources in the Syracuse area, along with promoting permaculture education efforts to community members. For more information on how to become a sustaining member of this campaign, visit This upcoming summer, the Alchemical Nursery is generating the first ever Insect Hotel in the Syracuse area at the lot on 717 Otisco Street. This will include sticks, pipes, and other natural resources which will be designed to form shelter for insects and amphibians including solitary bees, frogs, and toads, along with others. The hotel will allow for the gardens to be pest-controlled, along with providing an area for pollinators to increase and sustain the health of the plants. Frank explained that through monthly meetings, he and the other organization leaders are working on how to best grow the business community and further expand networking and collaborative efforts. There are two major upcoming networking events for business leaders in the Near Westside Initiative Business Association and other neighboring organizations which will help to advance these efforts; one event will be at the Delavan Center in the spring and one will be at the Rockwest Center in the fall. Frank is confident that these events will help to grow relations and improve positive business impact in the community.
