1 Lesson 40: must, must not, should not Lección 40: debe, no debe, no debería Reading (Lectura) You must answer all the questions. (Debes contestar todas las preguntas.) We must obey the law. (Debemos obedecer la ley.) You worked so hard all day. You must be tired. (Has trabajado muy duro todo el día. Debes estar cansado.) This is a new model. It must be expensive. (Este es un modelo nuevo. Debe ser caro.) She must not eat during the class. (Ella no debe comer durante las clases. ) I will tell you a secret. You must not tell anybody. (Te contaré un secreto. No debes decírselo a nadie.) 1
2 He doesn t like his new job. He should look for a new one. (No le gusta su nuevo trabajo. Debería buscar uno nuevo.) It should snow heavily tomorrow, according to the radio. (Debería nevar bastante mañana, según la radio.) We should not waste your time. (No deberíamos hacerte perder el tiempo.) You should not be rude like that. (No deberías ser así de grosero.) 2
3 Grammar focus (Enfoque Gramatical) Los verbos auxiliares se ponen antes que los verbos principales en estas frases; proveen de un significado adicional a los verbos principales. El verbo auxiliar must (debe) se usa para describir una probabilidad alta u obligación. Añade not después de must para hacer frases negativas. Sin embargo, sólo podemos expresar una obligación con must not, no una posibilidad. E.g.)He must be upset now. ( Debe estar triste ahora) He must not have known where to go. (No debe saber a dónde ir.) You must go home soon. (Debes volver a casa pronto) You must not go home soon. (No debes volver a casa pronto) El verbo auxiliar should (debería) se usa para describir una expectativa u obligación. Añade not después de should para crear frases en negativo. E.g.)According to the weathercast, it should rain tomorrow. (Según la información del tiempo, debería llover mañana) According to the weathercast, it should not rain tomorrow. (Según la información del tiempo, no debería llover mañana.) You should go home soon. (Deberías irte a casa pronto) You should not go home soon. (No deberías irte a casa pronto) 3
4 Speaking (Conversación) 1) You must pay all your bills tomorrow. (Debes pagar tus facturas mañana.) 2) He must finish all the requirements before the end of this week. (Debe terminar todos los requisitos antes del fin de semana.) 3) You must not play with fire. (No debes jugar con fuego.) 4) This car must run very fast. (Este coche debe ir muy rápido.) 5) We must not smoke in public. (No debemos fumar en público.) 6) You should stop thinking about your ex-boyfriend. (Deberías dejar de pensar en tu ex-novio.) 7) She should wear that dress to the party tonight. (Deberías llevar ese vestido a la fiesta esta noche.) 8) The building should be here for a long time in the future. (El edificio debería permanecer aquí por mucho tiempo.) 9) You are always tired in the morning. You shouldn t stay up late. (Siempre estás cansado por la mañana. (No debería conducir por encima del límite de velocidad. Es peligroso.) 5) I forgot to turn on the fridge. The food be getting spoiled. (Olvidé encender el frigorífico. 7 Translating (Traducción) Traduce estas frases al inglés. 1) Debes estudiar para el exámen.
