1 INSIDE: Schedule of Classes Training News A quarterly newsletter from the Northern California Laborers Training Center Issue No. 56 Winter 2005 From the Executive Director s Desk You may recall in our last newsletter there was a short article telling you who I am, where I am from and about my experience and education. Although I am proud of my past achievements, it is now time that we look to the future, the future of training in general and, specifically, the future of the Laborers Training Center. Let us start with the future of training in general. In the past, training in a craft that a young man might receive was passed on from father to son, grandfather to grandson, uncle to nephew, or maybe he would receive training on the job, mentored by the more experienced Laborers. Then the public system got on board with shop classes and minimal vocational training. Today with educational budget cuts and the public systems focus on test scores, vocational training has all but disappeared. Nowadays, to be a Union Craft Laborer means more, much more, than how to hold a shovel. A Laborer needs to know how to read prints, shoot grade, and shore a ditch as well as a multitude of other skills. With the onset of both State and Federal regulations, the need for certified vocational training has never been greater. That is where the Laborers Training Center steps into the future. As your Executive Director, it is my job to shape the future of training for the Northern California Laborers Union members. What does that mean specifically? One thing it means is making sure the latest training is made available to the fine staff of instructors we presently have at the LTC. In that way our curriculum stays on the cutting edge of construction training. Another requirement is to reach out to our locals, our members and our signatory contractors to make them aware of what the LTC has to offer and to ask what do they see as their needs for the future. Finally, to deliver that information and training to our members in a way that is useful and meaningful. In shaping the LTC, our staff and I need to look to the emerging technologies of construction. Things like trenchless technologies, advancements in safety and possibly personal development for our members, to name only a few. We are looking to expanding our apprenticeship program to meet the increased demand for trained laborers and to develop foremen/supervisor training. More and more our signatory contractors are looking to the laborers to lead the way, to be the future leaders in construction. That is just the beginning of the future shape of training at the Terence J. O Sullivan Laborers Training Center. It is my hope that I can be a catalyst in the process of developing our future. It cannot be done alone. It takes the teamwork of the Training Center s staff, it takes the involvement of our business managers and agents, and finally it takes the understanding of our members that the Laborers Training Center is their investment in their future. The Training Center was built and is maintained through the hard work of Union members day in and day out. Our members now need to reap the benefits of that investment for their future, the future of the Union and the future of this great country of ours. 2 Brothers AND Sisters By Jeff Armstrong, Director of Apprenticeship and Valerie Eterovich, North Bay/North Coast Apprentice Field Coordinator It is no secret that being a Laborer is hard work always has been and always will be. This is why it is not for everyone. If you cannot keep up or you are dragging the crew down, you may find there is no future in it for you. That is why hardworking, dedicated and dependable Laborers will always be in demand. Until recently, the call to pave the roads, build the bridges and dig the earth was answered solely by men. That is no longer the case. All you have to do is look around and you will agree. More and more, women are choosing construction as a career. They are keeping up with the guys, pulling their weight and getting things done. In some instances, they are the ones setting the pace. Their supervisors and coworkers expect nothing less and neither does the Apprenticeship Program. In the North Bay, a group of apprentices have started referring to themselves as Val s Gals after their Field Coordinator Valerie Eterovich. We would like to take this opportunity to recognize these extraordinary women with wonderful attitudes who are either excelling in their apprenticeship or joining the ranks of successful graduates. Photo by Valerie Eterovich Apprentice Angela Reyes Angela Reyes is one of our newest apprentices. Angela was born into a construction family. Swinging a hammer by age of 10, she was familiar with many of the tools she is using today long before becoming an apprentice. Before joining our program, Angela had learned the basics of both masonry and pipe work from family members. Raising two small children on her own while working for North Bay Construction, her goal is to one day build her own home. Mary Wilson. Mary told her about the opportunities the Laborers had to offer and advised Nikki to become an apprentice Laborer. Nikki is now a 6th step apprentice working on the Benicia Bridge with Shelene and could not be happier. Able to fully provide for her family, Nikki recently moved into a larger home. When asked about Nikki, Superintendent Steve Riley commented that she is a quick learner, picks up things fast and is a great motivator. Photo by Valerie Eterovich Apprentice Nikki Waddill (L) & Apprentice Graduate Shelene Santisteven (R) Flirting with a life of crime and drug use and earning just $7.00 an hour in a second-hand store, Shelene Santisteven came to us ready to make a change. With no skills and only an 8th grade education, Shelene decided to take a chance with the Laborers Apprenticeship Program. The Program quickly opened her eyes to all the opportunities that were available. No longer living paycheck to paycheck, she is grateful for all she has learned. Shelene is currently working for Kiewit Pacific on the Benicia Bridge Project where Superintendent Steve Riley says that Shelene is a quick learner, a good worker and knows how to take charge. Shelene has just recently graduated from the Program. Like Shelene, Nikki Waddill was headed for a life of drugs and crime. Forced to choose between straightening up or going to prison, she sought the advice of friend and recent Apprenticeship Program graduate Training News - Page 2 Photo by Valerie Eterovich Apprentice Graduate Marian Nishimura (L) & DPR s Superintendent Karl Rankl (R) Like many Americans, Marian Nishimura was a victim of outsourcing. After several years with the phone company, her job was shipped overseas. Wanting to ensure this did not happen to her again, Marian enrolled in a construction related pre-apprenticeship program. Upon graduation, Marian evaluated many of the different trades and chose the Laborers because she felt the Laborers had the most to offer. When she was not working, Marian took full advantage of the training offered at the Laborers Training Center and has received many diverse certifications. See Brothers AND Sisters, Page 3

Karl Rankl, Superintendent with DPR Construction, states that Marian is eager to learn and grasps tasks outside her realm. She is also very organized. Like Shelene, Marian has recently successfully completed the Apprenticeship Program. We wish these and all of our Apprentices continued success and hope their stories inspire others to follow in their footsteps. No es ningún secreto que el ser un obrero es trabajo duro siempre ha sido y siempre será. Esta es la razón por la cual ésta profesión no es para todos. Todo lo que usted tiene que hacer es mirar alrededor para estar de acuerdo con nosotros. Cada día más y más, mujeres están eligiendo la construcción como su carrera. Están trabajando al mismo ritmo que los hombres, dándose a valer y ejecutando su trabajo competentemente. En algunos casos, las mujeres son las que establecen el paso de trabajo. Sus supervisores y compañeros de trabajo no esperan nada menos, y ni tampoco el Programa del Aprendizaje. En el Norte de la Bahía, un grupo de Aprendices ha comenzado a llamarse a si mismo Las muchachas de Val en honor de su Coordinador Valerie Eterovich. El Programa de Aprendizaje quisiera tomar esta oportunidad para reconocer a estas mujeres extraordinarias con actitudes maravillosas que están sobresaliendo en su aprendizaje o están incorporándose en las filas de graduados exitosos. Una de nuestros más nuevos aprendices, Angela Reyes viene de familia de construcción. Acostumbrada a usar un martillo desde la edad de 10 años, ella ya estaba familiarizada mucho antes de hacerse aprendiz con muchas de las herramientas que actualmente está utilizando. Antes de ingresar a nuestro programa, Angela ya había aprendido los fundamentos de la albañilería y del trabajo de la pipa por medio de su familia. Aquí es adonde el Centro de Entrenamiento de los Obreros de Construcción camina hacia el futuro. Como su Director Ejecutivo, es mi trabajo formar el futuro del entrenamiento para los miembros de los Sindicatos de el Norte de California. Qué es lo que eso específicamente significa? Una cosa que significa es el estar cerciorándonos constantemente de que el entrenamiento más avanzado este a la disposición de nuestros finos instructores que tenemos actualmente en el Centro de Entrenamiento de los Obreros de Construcción. De esa manera nuestro plan de estudios está al filo del entrenamiento de la construcción. Otro requisito es trabajar con nuestros locales, nuestros miembros y nuestros contratistas signatarios para mantenerlos informados de lo que el Centro de Entrenamiento tiene que ofrecer y preguntarles que es lo que ellos ven como sus necesidades del futuro. Finalmente, para proporcionar esa información y entrenamiento a nuestros miembros de una manera que sea útil y significativa. En configurar el Centro de Entrenamiento de los Obreros de Construcción, nuestro personal y yo necesitamos estudiar las tecnologías de construcción que están emergiendo constantemente.
