2 Dear Parents/Guardians & future AP Student, Welcome to the AP Program at HSANA! I am very excited to be teaching your child this year in Spanish Language and Culture. Students in AP Spanish Language and Culture use authentic Spanish materials and sources to demonstrate their language skills in multiple forms of communication, including two-way interactions and conversation, interpretation of written materials, and oral and written presentation of information and ideas. Students choose to take this AP Course. It is a college-level course designed so that students may potentially earn college credit through the AP Spanish Language Exam, which is administered by the College Board in May. To prepare all students for such rigor, all quizzes and examinations are timed. In separate cases, extra time and accommodations will be allowed according to official documentation. All students are welcomed to join the class. All students must agree to the course syllabus, contract, and expectations. All students must complete a summer assignment to be turned in the first week of school. These will be given the semester before and will be available on the school s website. An AP student is expected to complete all assignments on time and with genuine interest and appreciation for the course. An AP student is expected to follow the course syllabus and outline. An AP student is required to complete all assignments, readings, and project on time. The AP Program at HSANA welcomes all students and families into the program. Students must agree to this contract. As this is a college level course, students are expected to perform at that level through work ethic and dedication. Students are expected to complete the coursework in a timely manner with an emphasis on quality and with a genuine appreciation for the language. Much of the preparation work (including but not limited to reading) must take place prior to class so that students are prepared to discuss topics upon entering the room. All readings are mandatory. Students that do not sufficiently prepare will find it harder to participate in class and perform well on assessments and projects. Please note again that the AP Examination is created by the College Board and not specifically based on one textbook. Students must engage in outside study and research to prepare for the AP Exam. Tutorial and Review session opportunities will be available. It is the student s responsibility to research on their College choices regarding information about college credit policies concerning AP courses. While performance on the AP exam will NOT impact a student s grade nor determine their position in the AP program, it is highly suggested to take the exam. Please see the latest issue of the AP Parent Bulletin for more information. Please see your instructor and High School Counselor for assistance. Your instructor and counselor are here to guide you on how to begin your college and career searches. Students will be challenged and engaged in AP Spanish Language and Culture. The course encourages them to become life-long learners. If at any time you or the student has any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. The AP test is optional but I highly encourage students to take it. You may also check the College Board website for AP Courses information for all courses. 4 AP Spanish Language and Culture Bienvenidos! Congrats and welcome to AP Spanish Language and Culture! You have chosen to study a great college- level course next year. The work is not difficult but it does demand time and your best effort to succeed. For that reason, you have summer assignments designed to maintain and to improve your skills in Spanish. I understand that summers can be busy. I do not expect you to spend hours on these assignments every week. I do expect you to practice your Spanish regularly and to improve your skills over the summer. The assignments are designed to provide continual use of the language all summer long, which, in turn, will directly impact your success in the course. You are expected to turn in several things during the summer and the rest will be picked up the first day of class. You have not received a syllabus yet, but you should know that there will be a NO LATE WORK policy, effective ALL year (that includes this assignment). All assignments will be due by 10pm CST the night of their due date. Should you not have access to the internet at home, please make use of the public library system or internet cafes where ever you may be. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE WEEK BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS TO BEGIN THIS ASSIGNMENT! Waiting until the start of school eliminates the continual practice this assignment is intended to provide! Format of the AP Exam The AP Spanish Language Exam is a 3-4 hour skill based exam testing your abilities and proficiency in Spanish. It is NOT a knowledge- based exam like most other AP exams. You are on stage in Spanish for over 3 hours integrating all four of your skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

5 Assignment 1: Familiarize yourself with the exam DUE by June 13, 2014 (via Become familiar with EVERYTHING that is published on the AP website about this exam. The 2007 exam was radically different from those administered in prior years and many published materials you might find practice skills that no longer are tested. In 2014, the exam was changed once again. spanish- language 1. Look at the tips that the College Board suggests for you: 2. When you have done this, please write a short summary ( words) in Spanish of what you have learned about this exam. Include some ideas of how you will be able to study best over the course of the year. You can also include your hopes, plans, areas of concern, etc. Assignment 2: Reading Practice (10 points total, 1 point per article) DUE by July 11, 2014 (via jgutierrez@harmonytx.org) 1. Buy y no se lo tragó la tierra by Tomás Rivera. Have it read by the first day of school. You will be tested on it (probably on the first week of class) and we will discuss it. We will also use this book to practice writing. I purchased it off of amazon.com ( Trago- Tierra- Spanish- Edition/dp/ ) 2. Reading comprehension and writing are important skills tested on the AP Spanish language exam. To strengthen your Spanish reading comprehension and writing skills over the summer, you will read and summarize 10 news articles in Spanish. You will also document new words you learn and use those words in original sentences. Use the form attached to this packet to record the articles you have read and write your summaries. Make sure the articles fall within the six themes. The six themes are: Global Challenges, Science and Technology, Contemporary Life, Personal and Public Identities, Families and Communities, and Beauty and Aesthetics. Please pick two articles per theme. Start now! Where will I find news articles in Spanish? There are a number of news websites in Spanish available on the internet. See the list on the next page. In addition, most major cities in Texas have at least one Spanish newspaper. These newspapers are usually published weekly and are often available for free outside major retail stores such as Walmart, Fiesta, etc. IMPORTANT: If you believe that finding news articles in Spanish will be very difficult for you due to travel plans or other issues, you must speak with the AP Spanish teacher BEFORE the end of the current school year so that he/she can help you find the articles before the summer. 6 Assignment 3: Listening/Viewing Practice (10 points total, 1 point per ½ hour) DUE by July 25, 2014 (via jgutierrez@harmonytx.org) Listen to the radio, news, etc. and document it with a summary of 5-7 sentences in Spanish. Do not forget to document the webpage, radio name, etc. You may also fulfill this requirement by watching Spanish television, but it should be something of educational value (novelas are not news!) with a lot of language use such as a news program. See log attached. Start now! Assignment 4: Writing Practice (10 points total, 1 point per entry) DUE on the FIRST day of school You will be required to write 12 journal entries of approximately 100 words (not including prepositions, etc.) on topics of your choice. There can be about your family, favorite TV show, favorite music group, etc. Be careful not to translate directly from English to Spanish, now use any online translation service. Points will be deducted or you may not receive a score for that entre. All journal entries must be hand written and kept in a journal (comp notebook). While you may write about anything you choose, please make sure that it falls within the six themes that we will cover in class through out the year. The six themes are: Global Challenges, Science and Technology, Contemporary Life, Personal and Public Identities, Families and Communities, and Beauty and Aesthetics. Assignment 5:Audio Geography DUE by July 30, 2014 (via jgutierrez@harmonytx.org) If you have a computer at home, PLEASE download AUDACITY ( as well as the LAME plug- in to convert to MP3s. This is the program that we will be using through out the year to prepare for the speaking portion of the exam. Before you do this assignment, study ALL of the Spanish speaking countries in North, South and Central America, as well as the Caribbean and Spain. Once you have studied all of this, send me 5 files, 2 minutes long each (no more, no less), speaking about the any country you choose. You can only do each country once and please pick countries you do not know much about. DO NOT WRITE A SCRIPT AND READ IT OR READ OFF OF AN ONLINE SOURCE. It is very obvious when you guys are reading. If you read, I will not give you credit for this portion of the assignment. Please send your files in MP3 format. Any other format will not be graded. Assignment 6: Grammar DUE/TESTED on the FIRST day of school Please visit and read through every section of the Spanish Grammar section on Sparknotes ( As an AP student you are required to be an EXPERT in Spanish Grammar. While I will help you get there, you need to all be on the same level when we start class. I might require you to purchase English Grammar for Students of Spanish (12 th edition) to help you guys better understand. This is a possibility and not yet mandatory, however if you feel you are weak in grammar and wish to purchase it, go ahead!
