2 MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY Marquette University is an independent, coeducational institution of higher learning founded in 1881 by members of the Society of Jesus, a Catholic religious order established in 1549 by St. Ignatius Loyola. The university is named after father Jacques Marquette ( ), a French Jesuit missionary and explorer in North America. Father Marquette s spirit of exploration and discovery and his dedicated service to others are exemplified in Marquette University s unflagging commitment to excellence in higher education in the Jesuit tradition. MILWAUKEE Marquette University is located near the business and cultural center of Milwaukee. With a greater metropolitan population of approximately 1.5 million, Milwaukee ranks among the nation s largest cities. Milwaukee is rich in cultural life. The Performing Arts Center houses the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Ballet Company, and the Florentine Opera. A new theater district is home of the Repertory Theater Company and the Pabst Theater. The Milwaukee Art Museum offers a permanent collection which includes nearly 20,000 works from ancient objects to art of the present. The Museum s primary strengths are 19th- and 20th-century American and European works. The new Santiago Calatrava-designed expansion features changing exhibitions. In addition to the museums, the Midwest Center holds many conventions and art exhibitions. On campus, you will enjoy visiting the Haggerty Museum of Art, which houses many important paintings and other pieces of art, the Raynor Memorial Library and the St. Joan of Arc Chapel. The main humanities building, Lalumiere Language Hall houses the Departments of Foreign Languages and Literatures and Social and Cultural Sciences. Lalumiere resembles a giant honeycomb with its 11 foot high, 7 foot wide oval windows cast in a facade of concrete and white quartz panels..opened in 1970, the academic hall is named for Rev. Stanislaus P. Lalumiere, S.J., one of Marquette's founders and the University's fourth president. 2

3 TRANSPORTATION Taxi or commercial limousine services from the Mitchell International Airport to the downtown hotels in Milwaukee are available. If you choose the limousine service, we suggest that you make reservations in advance. Airport Connection Limousine Service 5140 South 3 rd Street (414) ; The cost of the limousine is $10 one way and $18 round trip. If you plan to drive to Milwaukee, parking is available on campus at Parking Structure 1 at th Street. Day parking is $4 per day. If you plan to park overnight, you will need to purchase a parking permit from the Parking office located on the first floor of the structure. Parking permits for overnight parking are also $4 per night. HOTEL ACCOMODATIONS Rooms have been set aside at the Holiday Inn -City Centre (611 W. Wisconsin Ave ; ) and the Milwaukee Hilton (509 W. Wisconsin Avenue ). These Hotels are within several blocks walking distance from campus. Other hotels such as Howard Johnson ( ; ) are farther from campus. Participants are responsible for making their reservations directly with the hotel. REGISTRATION AND FEES Conference participants must register for the conference. 5 CONFERENCE SESSIONS All conference sessions will take place in the Alumni Memorial Union, Raynor Memorial Library and Lalumiére Language Hall at Marquette University. Papers will begin at the times listed in the program and may not be read in absentia. Moderators have been asked to keep speakers to the 20- minute limit for their paper, so as to allow enough time for a question-answer period after each paper has been presented. CARIBE: REVISTA DE CULTURA Y LITERATURA Caribe: Revista de Cultura y Literatura is a joint publication between Marquette University and Western Michigan University. The journal was originally founded by Matías Montes Huidobro. After several years of not being published, it reappeared in December 1998, and continues to be published biannually during the Winter and Summer. It is currently edited by Armando González-Pérez, Professor of Spanish at Marquette University and Jorge Febles, Professor of Spanish at Western Michigan University. Caribe publishes scholarly articles, essays, notes, interviews, and book reviews in Spanish and English about the Spanish-speaking countries in the Caribbean area: Colombia, Cuba, México, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, as well as Central America. 5
