2 Quiénes somos Los miembros de la A-4U nos situamos entre las instituciones con mayor producción científica de toda España y nuestros proyectos de investigación aparecen entre los mejor situados, según los indicadores de citas del Web of Science. Nos encontramos entre las mejores universidades españolas de acuerdo con los siguientes indicadores internacionales de investigación: nivel de productividad y calidad científica de las publicaciones, proyectos de investigación competitivos en los ámbitos nacional e internacional, nivel de atractivo y formación para investigadores. Representamos el 20 % de la participación total de las universidades españolas en el Programa Marco para la Investigación y el Desarrollo Tecnológico, financiado por la Unión Europea. Hemos recibido el prestigioso Premio Nacional de Investigación en España por nuestros grandes avances en diversos campos del conocimiento. Estamos ubicados en estructuras de campus pensadas exclusivamente para la vida universitaria, y dotadas con todos los servicios. Son infraestructuras que concentran las distintas actividades académicas, culturales y sociales, gracias a las cuales hemos obtenido el reconocimiento de Campus de Excelencia Internacional. Disponemos de parques de investigación y somos líderes en transferir el conocimiento y la innovación a las empresas. Casi la mitad de las empresas spin-off fundadas por universidades españolas han surgido del grupo de la A-4U. Nuestros objetivos Who we are A-4U universities rank among the highest performing research institutions in Spain based on the analysis of citation data (Web of Science). We are also among top Spanish universities according to the following internationally recognised research indicators: productivity and scientific quality of the publications, national and international competitive research projects, and attraction and training of researchers. We represent 20% of the total Spanish universities participation in the EU's Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development. Our universities have received the prestigious National Research Prize of Spain for breakthrough advances in human knowledge. We are located on campuses with all necessary facilities and a vibrant student life. These infrastructures encompass different academic, cultural and social activities, which have earned us the title of Campus of International Excellence. We house several Research Parks, spearheading the transfer of knowledge and technology from university to businesses. 3 Qué hacemos Las universidades de la A-4U colaboramos en las siguientes áreas: Investigación europea Hemos establecido una oficina permanente en Bruselas, Office for the Promotion of European Research Activities (OPERA), con la voluntad de: Favorecer los intereses de investigación de las universidades y del personal investigador de la A-4U en las instituciones de la UE, así como en otras plataformas y comités de toma de decisiones en Europa. Incrementar la participación y el liderazgo en proyectos de I+D+i dotados por la Unión Europea y por otros programas intergubernamentales europeos. Ofrecer apoyo logístico al personal investigador de la A-4U que visite Bruselas. Evaluación de la investigación Hemos desarrollado un sistema de información para evaluar las actividades de investigación en las universidades españolas, financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación. Relaciones internacionales Queremos establecer acuerdos de colaboración con otras universidades y alianzas estratégicas en todo el mundo que faciliten la participación en centros de investigación y educación superior de vanguardia, y atraigan a académicos de talento. Carrera académica Gestionamos un programa subvencionado que facilita la movilidad de los estudiantes postdoctorales entre las cuatro universidades de la Alianza e impulsa la colaboración en investigación. Ofrecemos a los estudiantes de doctorado un programa de formación especializado que facilita su entrada en el mercado laboral y promueve el reconocimiento del valor añadido que aportan los doctores a las empresas. Programas de grado y de postgrado conjuntos Aunamos nuestra experiencia para establecer los primeros grados y postgrados conjuntos en España impartidos en inglés. Esto permitirá a los estudiantes aprovechar las fortalezas de las cuatro universidades y alternar sus estudios entre Madrid y Barcelona. What we do A-4U Universities collaborate in the following areas: European Research A-4U has established a permanent office in Brussels, Office for the Promotion of European Research Activities (OPERA), which aims to: Foster the research interests of A-4U universities and researchers in EU institutions as well as other European decision-making committees and platforms. Increase participation and leadership in R&D&I projects funded by the European Union and other European intergovernmental programmes. Provide logistical support to A-4U researchers visiting Brussels. Research Assessment We have developed an Evaluation of Research Activities in Spanish Universities information system, funded by the Spanish Ministry for Science and Innovation. International Relations We seek to establish collaborative agreements with other universities and strategic alliances worldwide in order to facilitate our participation in leading centres for research and higher education as well as to attract the best talent from around the world. Academic Career We operate a funded two-year postdoctoral placement programme, which facilitates mobility of our postdoctoral students among the four universities and fosters research collaboration. We offer our doctoral students a specialised training programme to facilitate their entry into the job market and to promote recognition of the added value they bring to businesses. Joint Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes We are pooling our expertise to establish the first joint undergraduate and postgraduate English-taught degrees in Spain, enabling students to take advantage of the complementary strengths of all four institutions and to alternate their study periods between Madrid and Barcelona. 4 universidades líderes en España 4 leading Spanish universities

International exchange programmes UAB has several international agreements with other universities and institutions such as the Erasmus, Leonardo Da Vinci and UAB programmes. Study abroad programmes International students can spend one or two semesters at UAB without officially enrolling in a Spanish public university thanks to the Study Abroad programme. The programme provides students with a variety of subjects to choose from without having to take a full year of courses. On completing their stay, students receive a certificate from UAB which can be validated for credits at their home university. Programa study abroad Para aquellos estudiantes internacionales que quieran cursar uno o dos cuatrimestres en la UAB sin tener que matricularse de forma oficial en la universidad pública española se ofrece el programa Study Abroad. Study Abroad permite optar a una gran variedad de asignaturas sin tener que realizar el curso completo. Al terminar su estancia, los estudiantes recibirán un certificado de la UAB que puede convalidarse por créditos en sus universidades de origen. It has an enormous technological capacity, modern facilities and research at the highest level. UPF leads the Spanish ranking in Social Sciences according to the Times Higher Education (2010). 15 OPERA Office for the Promotion of European Research Activities A-4U universities: main actors in the European Research Area A-4U universities are committed to consolidating the triangle of knowledge needed to move towards smart, sustainable and inclusive growth in Spain and Europe. Within the context of the Europe 2020 Strategy, A-4U universities are considered one of the main Spanish actors in terms of participation and further development of the European Research Area (ERA). With the aim of continuing to advance towards an international model and to promote excellence in research, A-4U universities joined forces to establish a permanent office in Brussels. OPERA (Office for the Promotion of European Research Activities) became operational in 2009 and its main goal is to support A-4U and its researchers in their efforts to achieve a better and more competitive research at European and international level. A-4U universities account for 20% of the total funding received by Spanish universities under the EU Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration. OPERA s objectives: In order to strengthen the participation of researchers from A-4U universities in the European Research Area, OPERA focuses on: Fostering the research interests of A-4U universities and their researchers in EU institutions as well as other European R&D&I decision-making committees and platforms. Supporting universities efforts to increase participation and leadership in R&D&I projects funded by the European Union and other European intergovernmental programmes. Providing logistical support to A-4U researchers visiting Brussels. OPERA s specific activities: In collaboration with the European Project Offices of A-4U universities, OPERA is engaged in specific activities to: Support the development at each university of an ERA and EU Framework Programme strategy. Develop joint positions in relation to consultations launched at European level on R&D&I. Support A-4U universities input into European research policy development and implementation through interfacing with the appropriate bodies. Foster the participation of researchers in evaluation committees of the EU Framework Programme and other EU expert groups. Anticipate funding opportunities offered by the EU Framework Programme and other European-level funding organisations. Build and maintain contacts with the European Commission and other EU institutions. Monitor R&D&I European policy development. How does OPERA work? Opera works closely with A-4U universities and their European Projects Offices. It also interfaces with the European Commission and other EU institutions and networks in Brussels. En el marco de la Estrategia Europa 2020 de la Unión Europea, las universidades de la A-4U son consideradas uno de los actores principales en España tanto en su participación como en el desarrollo del Espacio Europeo de Investigación (EEI). Con el fin de seguir avanzando hacia un modelo internacional e impulsar la excelencia en investigación, la A-4U aunó esfuerzos para la creación en Bruselas de una oficina permanente. OPERA (Office for the Promotion of European Research Activities) inició su andadura en el año 2009 y su meta principal es apoyar a las universidades de la A-4U en sus esfuerzos para mejorar la competencia y la calidad de la investigación a nivel europeo e internacional. 18 Postgraduate Enrolment Visa and legal requirements If you are from outside the European Union and you want to study in Spain, you must obtain a Type D open student visa (Visado D Estudiante - Abierto) before leaving your country. You can apply for a visa through your nearest Spanish Embassy or Consulate. Without the visa you cannot obtain the Student Residence Card you need to be a legal Spanish resident. The Student Residence Card (Autorización de Estancia por Estudios) is a temporary residence permit that remains valid while you are studying in Spain. This permit is valid for a maximum of one academic year and can be renewed every year until you finish your studies. You will have a maximum of 30 days after entering the European Union to begin the process of applying for a Student Residence Card. Important: You should check how much time you will spend in Spain, since there is also a Type D visa limited to only 180 days (Visado D Estudios hasta 180 días), and under no circumstances can you renew this visa once you are in Spain, or apply for a Student Residence Card with a limited-type visa. If you are planning to stay more than six months, you will need to obtain a Type D open student visa before leaving your country. A visa can never be changed in Spain. You will need to return to your country to obtain another visa. Work permits: while studying in Spain, you can apply for a work permit (Autorización de Trabajo) if you have a part-time job offer and can demonstrate that work and studies are compatible. After finishing studies in Spain you can apply for a work permit if, and only if, your stay in Spain while studying is more than 3 calendar years and you have a job offer.
