It has been a true labor of love. Like the pangs of birth it has also brought forth fear, mystery, excitement, a sense of wonderment and even beauty. This magazine has allowed for a reconnection of friendships and partnerships. It has reminded us of the realities such as our 2010 census letting us know that Latinos grew by 57% percent in the state of PA. That without the Latino vote a Presidential hopeful cannot win the election. Latinos are known for being leaders in small business thanks to their work ethic and strong family connections. George Fernandez, Publisher We further learn that the Latino buying power numbers in the trillions. The Latino population is growing twice as fast as any other population group 2 out 4 babies will be Latino by We see Latinos in media all over the place, case in point Sofia Vergara highest paid actress (not just Latina) on television. And let s not fail to mention Latino education where most schools today teach the second most popular language in the United States Spanish. Second, I hope that you become a part of the Latino Connection family by interacting with us via our social media platforms our web page, Twitter, and Facebook and those we help promote within our pages. Our new American reality is that we are connecting more and more via these platforms; in fact Latinos/Hispanics are the largest connected group in its use of social media. Our new American reality is that our culture is dual and so is our language. More and more of us are getting married to non-latinos and our children are marking the Latino/Hispanic box because mami or papi gives them the privilege. When was the last time you met a Latino Jones, Smith, or Brown, probably a lot more recently than you realize. Now that s the new American reality. This Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Central Pennsylvania is the voice for Hispanic business in our community, government, and politics. 4 Español Appreciating Nature In Its Natural State The Appalachian Trail Apreciando la naturaleza en su estado natural El Sendero de los Apalaches When we say Appalachaian Trail to the average Latino, it means hot, sweaty, and walking, No, thank you, I don t DO walking. Hiking is not just walking; it s defined by the dictionary as to go on an extended walk for pleasure or exercise. We found a Latina that LOVES hiking. Yunuen Armas, 24, finds hiking to be, rejuvenating and therapeutic for her. Now that s the kind of hiking experience we re talking about when you decide to undertake the Appalachian Trail. Armas first started hiking with her family at the age of eight, but a friend rejuvenated her love for the adventure again last year. Since then she has gone on as many as four hikes a month during good weather. Armas wanted to reconnect with nature and found it also helped her get in better shape. It s much more rigorous than being on a treadmill or stationary bike. You work muscles trying to get up the mountain you didn t even know you had. Armas also appreciates the experience as nature truly is a magical place to be. She also states that, It s humbling to be a part of it and to see things in their natural state. Hiking is a truly connected experience with nature. Hiking is not without its challenges, but Armas knows there are rewards with each and every hike as well. Each hike will mean work and yes even some sweat, but she can t help love the fresh air, and view when you get to the top which makes it all worthwhile. Armas doesn t like to feel rushed during a hike as she prefers to take it all in. She considers it a privilege, not a task. Her advice to new ones undertaking the hiking experience, Take one step at a time. I used to get overwhelmed by looking at the top from the bottom. It helps to focus on your progress. Also, remember ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE! Armas longest hike has been five miles long. She hopes to hike some of the other mountains one day like the Rocky Mountains and Mount Everest. For some people like Armas, nature has a healing effect. Hiking the Appalachian Trail is perfect way to get back to nature. For anyone considering crossing the Appalachian Trail off their bucket list or making it a weekend ritual with friends, remember to do your research. Like Armas, start with a more experienced hiking friend. Go on websites, blogs or even YouTube videos to get an idea of what to expect. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for the time of year. Carry a bottle of water and protein bars just in case you are out a little longer than you realize. You wouldn t want to lose energy and need it to get back to your car. Above all, have fun and enjoy the experience. There is also a free website guide for Pennsylvania available (www. whatbird.com) where you can search for a bird based on its shape. FUN FACTS! Yunuen Armas The Appalachian Trail runs from Maine to Georgia over 2,180 miles through 14 states. The good news is that visitors don t have to hike the whole thing. You can go for an hour, a day, a weekend or as long or short a time as you want! There are side trails to make loop hikes in certain areas or hikers can do an out and back hike. The Appalachian Trail is there for everybody to enjoy! The expectation is that visitors plan ahead and prepare, and familiarize themselves with Leave No Trace principles (found here: but a visit to the Appalachian Trail takes no special skill, knowledge, or expensive equipment, just a desire to enjoy and connect with the natural world! (Comfortable supportive footwear is a must.) Visitors can take a hike by themselves, with friends, or with their families and are encouraged to do so! The Appalachian Trail Conservancy suggests that groups limit themselves to less than 25 for a day hike and less than 10 for an overnight. There are hikes to suit all interests and abilities. A little research can help you identify easy strolls (like the Cumberland Valley near Carlisle) or more strenuous challenging pursuits like the Pinnacle in Berks County. Find something that suits your interests and abilities. The Trail passes through several state and national parks (Pine Grove Furnace State Park in Cumberland County, Caledonia State Park in Franklin County) where additional amenities and recreational activities (like a swim to cool off after your hike!) can be enjoyed. The chain of Appalachian Mountains are a migratory corridor for many bird and other species. These species travel back and forth between breeding/nesting grounds in Central PA to Mexico and Central America during the winter months. 5 courtesy of inaxxs.com and Manuel Jblaze Garcia INTERVIEW WItH LEJUAN JAMES Juan Atiles is better known to his close to 400,000 followers (and counting!) in the social media world as LeJuan James, in honor of his basketball idol, Lebron James. Born of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent, the young comedic actor made his atmospheric leap into the public eye with gut twisting skits portraying Hispanic culture and its community. Inaxxs own Manuel JBlaze Garcia had the opportunity to sit down with LeJuan James to find out what made him drop everything - school, work, etc. - to do it for the vine. MG: Do you remember the moment you realized that using your phone to make videos was bigger than something that was just cool to do? LeJuan James: I always remember that. I ve been able to change my life, not only for myself but for my family. I was able to put myself in a position to be successful off of social media. Honestly, I got started on Vine. I was playing around. It wasn t something that I was thinking about doing. I was a full time student/full time retail manager. I wasn t really thinking about it. I got my family involved and people started gravitating to it. When I started seeing that I was a couple of weeks in and then a couple of months, the type of energy and attention that it drew, that it forced me to dedicate my life to entertainment. I had to leave my job and school. I had to drop everything. Everyone I knew was looking at me crazy. I had never been the type of dude to take risks, but I took a leap of faith and everything is turning out really good for me and I m really excited. MG: Give us an inside look at the typical day in the life of LeJuan James. You made a radical jump - a leap of faith as you said. What s the inside scoop? Do you write something up to post on Instagram? LeJuan James: To be honest, my days are really laid back and chill. There isn t a routine or schedule for my content. I feel the real creative content comes out when it isn t forced and it s not overthought. I can be watching something and get to thinking about it. For instance, I just happen to be scrolling through the internet and saw The Simpsons and thought about how funny it would be if I reinvent it from the Spanish culture point of view. The content comes out much better when it s not overdone. I make sure that the content is relative to everyone and has humor. The day in the life of LeJuan is chill. MG: With everything that has happened for you over the past year with Vine, are you programmed now? Is everything you see and experience something you immediately translate into an Vine video? Do they come at any moment? LeJuan James: Yeah, my body and my mind is programmed. I mean, me personally I have to come up with content everyday. I m not stressing over it. I don t mean to sound cocky, but it s the confidence in me that I know I m going to deliver something good that the audience wants. I see my following and how fast it s growing. I pay attention to what the public wants and the perception of what to humorize. I m very conscious of my image, the things that I do, and what people are saying. I study social media as if it were a job. It s a science to me. I have particular times to post, particular passions, and certain things I want to talk about. It s a business at the end of the day. MG: Let s talk about the phone. Everyone talks about how funny your videos are. I thought it would be dope to talk about how important your phone is. I have a two-part question: 1. How important is your phone and have you changed your phone? and 2. If you talked to a phone company, what would tell them to change for people to better interact with social media? LeJuan James: Cell phones are extremely significant percent of the population cannot function without their phone. When I was growing up we didn t have the phones that we ve have now. I see kids in school with the new iphone 6. Generations are evolving and the phone is part of their lives. I have been able to impact hundreds of thousands of people through a device that was originally created to communicate from Point A to Point B. It s an integral part of my life and everyone else. As far as companies helping to better interact with social media, third parties have done this. Twitter, 8 9

6 Español Vine, Snapchat, etc. These third party platforms have given me the opportunity to get ahead. This is America and this is a place where you can make your own dreams. I mean, I wake up everyday and feel blessed because I have been able to take advantage of opportunities through a phone. There is so much interest in cell phones that it gives the public more interest in me because all of my work is through a phone. You re always connected to LeJuan James. Whether it be Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, and now I m working on some stuff for YouTube. You just have to make sure you re marketable. You have to continue to evolve yourself. I get people from all walks of life being able to identify with my work and I m very proud of that. That s what resonates with me and there s no dollar amount that can change that. MG: Tell me about your videos. I checked out your YouTube and you do a pretty dope job at acting. What s so cool is that it relates past Puerto Rican and Dominican culture. They re hilarious and the comedy is clean and I was thinking that there are so many out there who do things on YouTube that is really edgy. Why did you make the decision to keep it clean and so far what has it shown you? LeJuan James: I know I represent Hispanics. There are stereotypes and I want to break those barriers. I don t want to be another stereotype. I want to show that Hispanics can be educated and progressive, be about their families, and want to get ahead. Specifically in the comedy department, some feel like they have to curse to bring humor, degrade females, or to talk about drugs and crime. At the end of the day that s not what I represent. A big portion of that is the way I was brought up. I refuse to let society change my mindset. I get people from all walks of life being able to identify with my work and I m very proud of that. That s what resonates with me and there s no dollar amount that can change that. MG: Let s talk about the pressure. Is there any to constantly bring out content that is relevant and funny? LeJuan James: I try to live one day at a time. I know many people have high expectations of me, but I just focus on the next thing. MG: What is the future of LeJuan James beyond just doing Vine videos? I know you done some hosting of parties, done some stuff with Univision Orlando. How do you see LeJuan James five years from now? LeJuan James: As far as the future, we have a lot going on. I invite people to check me out on all social media platforms. It started out with the videos and now we ve been able to branch out to other platforms. I m right now on a TV station every Sunday, working with Telemundo on some things, and quite a few other things. The sky is the limit. I don t want to just label myself. I m an entertainer. I want to be in movies and TV shows. I want to be able to do everything in my ability. It s a year in October that I left my job to go on this voyage and I m looking forward to what s ahead. MG: I know that family is very important to you and plays a very vital role in your life. Hispanics are pretty private about their lives. Give me a word that describes each one of your family members that are included in your videos. LeJuan James: Everything that has happened to me and has got me to where I am now is my family. When you see you videos, you see the bond. I have a traditional family that really loves each other. Without their unity, I would never be even where I am now. MG: What team are you on? iphone or Android? LeJuan James: Listen, I m on both. I shoot all my videos on iphone because the video editing is better. I use my Android to talk on. I win all the time. Siento el verdadero contenido creativo que sale cuando no es forzado o no es muy pensado. Yo puedo estar viendo algo y empezar a pensar en ello. Por ejemplo, me sucedió que estaba chequeando en internet vi Los Simpson y pensé que gracioso seria si yo lo reinventara desde el punto de vista de la cultura hispana. El contenido sale mucho mejor cuando no es exagerado. Les aseguro que el contenido el relativo a todos y tiene humor. El día en la vida de LeJuan es tranquilo. MG. Con todo lo que ha pasado para ti en los últimos años con video Vine, que estas programado ahora? Todo lo que ves y experimentas, es algo que inmediatamente traduces a un video Vine? Vienen en algún momento? LeJuan James: sí, mi cuerpo y mi mente están programados. O sea, Yo, personalmente tengo que venir con contenidos cada día. No estoy estresado por ello. No quiero sonar machito (fuerte) pero es la confianza en mí que sé que voy a entregar algo que la audiencia quiere. Veo lo que sigue y que tan rápido está creciendo. Pongo atención a lo que el público quiere y la percepción de lo que hacer humor. Estoy muy consciente de mi imagen, las cosas que hago, y lo que las personas dicen. Estudio los medios sociales como si fuera un empleo. Es una ciencia para mí. Tengo momentos concretos para publicar, particulares pasiones, y ciertas cosas de las que quiero hablar. Es un negocio al final del día. MG: Hablemos del teléfono. Todos hablan de lo divertidos que son tus videos. Pensé que sería como droga hablar de lo importante que es tu teléfono. Tengo una pregunta de dos partes. 1. Qué tan importante es tu teléfono y tú has cambiando tu teléfono? Y 2. Si hablas a una compañía de teléfono, qué dirías para cambiar a personas con una mejor interacción de los medios sociales? LeJuan James: Los celulares son extremadamente importantes de la población no puede funcionar sin su teléfono. Cuando yo estaba creciendo no teníamos los teléfonos que hemos tenido ahora. Veo niños en la escuela con el nuevo iphone 6. Las generaciones están envolviendo y los teléfonos son parte de sus vidas. Ya sea Instagran, Vine, Snapchat, y ahora estoy trabajando en algunas cosas por YouTube.Solo debes estar seguro de que tú eres vendible. Debes continuar envolviéndote tu mismo. MG: Dime acerca de tus videos. Observe tu YouTube y tú haces un muy divertido trabajo actuando. Que es tan gracioso, es que está relacionado a tu pasado puertorriqueño o a tu cultura dominicana. Son grandiosos y la comedia es limpia y yo estuve pensando que hay tantos allá afuera que hacen cosas en You Tube que son realmente grandiosas. Por qué tomaste la decisión de mantenerlas limpia y hasta ahora que te han enseñado? LeJuan James: Yo se que represento a los de habla hispana. Existen estereotipos y yo quiero romper esas barreras. No quiero ser otro estereotipo. Quiero mostrar que los hispanos pueden ser educados y progresivos, saber de sus familias y que quieren adelantar. Especialmente en el departamento de la comedia, algunos sientes que tienen que cursar para hacer humos, degradar a las féminas, o hablar de drogas y crímenes. Al final del día eso no es lo que represento. Una gran parte de eso es la forma en que yo fui criado. Me rehuso a permitir que la sociedad cambie mi forma de pensar. Tengo personas de todos los estilos de vida que pueden identificar mi trabajo y estoy muy orgulloso de ello. Eso es lo que me hace razonar y no hay cantidad de dólares que pueda cambiar eso. MG: Hablemos acerca de la presión. Hay algún constante contenido que podamos traer que sea relevante y divertido? LeJuan James: Trato de vivir un día a la vez. 7 Serving The Community In Many Different Ways The Red Cross When we hear Red Cross it s usually during the morning news talking about a late night fire that occurred where we find a family was displaced by a fire. Maybe we hear about the Red Cross due to a horrible natural disaster like the recent earthquakes in Nepal that continue to ravage that country. Perhaps you need to learn CPR and are looking for classes. The Red Cross is your source. The Red Cross is one of those organizations that does a lot to serve the community, but is under the radar. There is much that the Red Cross does within the local community. Thanks to Ellen Kyzer from the local Harrisburg Red Cross chapter we found some ways the Red Cross assist the community. The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need. Their network of generous donors, volunteers and employees share a mission of preventing and relieving suffering, here at home and around the world, through five key service areas: Disaster Relief: The Red Cross responds to approximately 70,000 disasters in the United States every year, ranging from home fires that affect a single family to hurricanes that affect tens of thousands, to earthquakes that impact millions. In these events, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, health and mental health services to help families and entire communities get back on their feet. Although the Red Cross is not a government agency, it is an essential part of the response when disaster strikes. They work in partnership with other agencies and organizations that provide services to disaster victims. International Services: The American Red Cross is part of the world s largest humanitarian network with 13 million volunteers in 187 countries. Working together, they help respond to disasters, build safer communities, and teach the rules of war. Each year, we reach an average of more than 100 million people across the globe. Locally, we offer assistance in connecting family members with loved ones in other parts of the world during time of disaster or civil unrest. Services to the Armed Forces: The Red Cross helps military members, veterans and their families prepare for, cope with, and respond to the challenges of military service. Lifesaving Blood: Donations of blood are what make the American Red Cross the largest single supplier of blood and blood products in the U.S. Each year, nearly 4 million people donate blood through the Red Cross, helping to provide more than 40% of America s blood supply Health and Safety Services: The Red Cross is the nation s leading provider of health and safety courses, such as CPR, First Aid and Lifeguard training. Each year, more than 9 million Americans participate in training programs, including first responders, educators, babysitters, and people who want to be prepared to help others in an emergency. Another way to interact with the Red Cross is through its social media platforms. The Red Cross has numerous excellent apps: one called FIRST AID also available in Spanish. Should you find yourself in an emergency situation, and after you have called 911, it s a great idea to have this app handy. It also offers an app for kids called MONSTER GUARD that helps children prepare for emergency situations in a nonthreatening way. Additional apps include: TORNADO, EMERGENCY to help keep your family safe in severe weather, HURRICANE, and PET FIRST AID among others. All of these apps help prepare you in an easy to learn manner and help to keep yourself, your family, and even your pets safe.
