We are very pleased to welcome you to the second global meeting of the 43 institutions currently funded by the Think Tank Initiative (TTI), entitled Research Quality: Approaches, Outreach, and Impact. Research quality is of huge importance for think tanks. It lies at the roots of the credibility and reputation of research organizations as legitimate contributors to academic and public policy debates. However, research quality is understood in many different ways, and has been at the center of much debate in academic, professional, and public policy circles. Through this Exchange we will aim to learn more about what research quality means to us, as well as learn about approaches and tools to strengthen research, engage with key actors, and increase the impact of think tanks. We invite you to engage in the many discussions that will take place this week as we come together to develop a collective understanding of research quality. We would also like to thank our dedicated Planning Committee members, who provided invaluable input into the design of the event over the past few months. Nous sommes ravis de vous accueillir à l occasion de la deuxième réunion internationale des 43 institutions actuellement financées par l Initiative Think Tank (ITT) intitulée «Qualité de recherche : approches, rayonnement et influence.» La qualité de recherche est extrêmement importante pour les think tanks. Elle est à la base de la crédibilité et de la réputation des organismes de recherche en tant que contributeurs légitimes aux débats académiques portant sur les politiques publiques. La qualité de recherche est cependant comprise de plusieurs façons différentes et s est trouvée au cœur de bien des débats dans les cercles académiques, professionnels, et de politiques publiques. Tout au long de cet Échange, nous nous efforcerons de préciser ce que nous entendons par «qualité de recherche» et de réfléchir à des approches et des outils qui permettraient de fortifier la recherche, d établir des relations avec des acteurs clés et d accroître l influence des think tanks. Nous vous invitons à prendre part aux multiples discussions qui auront lieu cette semaine, pendant laquelle nous serons réunis pour développer notre conception commune de la qualité de recherche. Notes / Notes / Notas: Nos complace darles la bienvenida a la segunda reunión global de las 43 instituciones actualmente financiadas por la Iniciativa Think Tank (ITT), denominada Calidad de la investigación: Enfoques, divulgación e impacto. La calidad de la investigación es de gran importancia para los think tanks. Es la base de la credibilidad y reputación de las organizaciones de investigación como colaboradoras legítimas en los debates académicos y los debates políticos públicos. Sin embargo, la calidad de la investigación se entiende de formas muy distintas, y ha estado en el centro de numerosos debates en círculos académicos, profesionales y de políticas públicas. Mediante este Intercambio, pretendemos aprender más sobre lo que significa la calidad de la investigación para nosotros, a medida que aprendemos más sobre los enfoques y las herramientas para fortalecer la investigación, comprometer a los actores clave y aumentar el impacto de los think tanks. Los invitamos a participar en las muchas discusiones que tendrán lugar esta semana mientras nos reunimos para desarrollar una comprensión colectiva de la calidad de la investigación. 6 The Venue Lieu de la réunion To encourage collaboration and exchange, we have opted to hold the event in a hotel in the Sisli area of Istanbul within walking distance of the bus and metro stations and Cevahir Shopping Mall. Additionally, the city s bustling business district, which is just outside the hotel s doorsteps, provides easy access to multinational and domestic companies. Name badges, conference programs and other materials will be provided. An information desk in the Mostar meeting room will remain open throughout the Exchange and will always be staffed. 12 About the Think Tank Initiative À propos de l Initiative Think Tank The Think Tank Initiative (TTI) is dedicated to strengthening the capacity of independent policy research institutions in the developing world. Launched in 2008 and managed by Canada s International Development Research Centre (IDRC), TTI is a partnership between six donors that together have committed over $200 million to the program. TTI currently provides 43 think tanks in 20 countries with core, non-earmarked funding. This support, which comprises up to 30 percent of their operating budgets, allows the institutions to attract, retain and build local talent, develop an independent research program, and invest in public outreach to ensure that research results inform and influence national and regional policy debates. TTI seeks to nurture the long-term sustainability of the think tanks it funds. As such, core funding is combined with dedicated capacity development support by program officers and external experts in three broad areas: research methods and skills, policy engagement and communication, and general organizational effectiveness. TTI also supports peer-to-peer review, learning and exchange. Phase 2 of TTI is set to end in L Initiative Think tank (ITT) est un programme visant à renforcer les capacités d institutions indépendantes vouées à la recherche sur les politiques (les think tanks) dans les pays en développement. Fruit d un partenariat regroupant six bailleurs de fonds qui, ensemble, se sont engagés à verser plus de 200 millions de dollars au programme, l ITT, lancée en 2008, est administrée par le Centre de recherches pour le développement international (CRDI), un organisme canadien. L ITT octroie actuellement un financement de base, non ciblé, à 43 think tanks répartis dans 20 pays. Ce soutien, qui représente jusqu à 30 % de leur budget de fonctionnement, permet aux institutions d attirer, de conserver et de renforcer des talents locaux, d élaborer des programmes de recherche indépendants et d investir dans des activités de communication publique afin que les résultats de recherche éclairent et influencent les débats sur les politiques aux échelles nationale et régionale. L objectif de l ITT est d assurer la pérennité des think tanks qu elle soutient.
