2 Rector?s Column A VULNERABLE LOOK These past several m onths have seen so m uch vi olence. Poli ce shooti ngs, shooti ngs of poli ce, terrori st attack s, m ass shooti ngs on school cam puses and at concerts and other publi c venues. It i s alm ost unbearable to the poi nt that w e dread the next?break i ng new s? on the televi si on or radi o. Though i t i s tem pti ng to get lost i n our di sgust and rage, gi vi ng i n to i t i s not the answ er. In the Gospel w hen John says,?behold the Lam b of God" (John 1:35-42), he rem i nds us that Jesus i s the sacri fi ci al lam b w ho gave hi s li fe to redeem us, to take aw ay our si n w hi ch otherw i se w ould destroy us. In the spi ri t of our Redeem er, the horri fi c events of these days are cryi ng out for som e k i nd of redem pti on. We begi n by ask i ng ourselves the questi on: As Chri sti ans, w hat i s our atti tude tow ard other hum an bei ngs? St. Paul says,?do you not k now that your body i s a tem ple of the Holy Spi ri t w i thi n you, w hom you have from God, and that you are not your ow n? For you have been purchased at a pri ce" (1 Cori nthi ans 6:17-20). In look i ng at other hum an bei ngs, do w e see som eone w ho i s a tem ple of the Holy Spi ri t? A creati on of God w i thi n w hom God dw ells? A person through w hom, though perhaps underneath layers and layers of w eak ness and si n, God i s able to be seen? Am i dst the vi olence of our w orld, w hen i t com es to others, w hat are w e w i lli ng to let ourselves see? Only terrori sts, perpetrators or enem i es? Do w e count as those God created i n hi s i m age only the people w e love and cheri sh? Can w e i nclude i n our vi si on that God created all of us i n hi s i m age? Can w e adm i t that w e are all capable of com m i tti ng the w orst atroci ty that w e see som eone else com m i tti ng? In ti m es of ram pant vi olence, em oti ons run hi gh. Instead of getti ng lost i n our feeli ngs, w e are to look for w hat can be redeem ed i n the m i dst of the pai n. We are asked to take another look at each other because Jesus di d and shed hi s ow n blood so that our di gni ty as God?s creati ons w ould be restored. The ti m e i s now to allow ourselves to see the often secret beauty of som ebody else?s heart. It i s i n thi s vulnerable look that redem pti on begi ns. 4 Mensaje de Nuest ro Rector UNA M IRADA VULNERABLE En los últi m os m eses, se han vi sto m ucha vi olenci a. Ti roteos de poli cías a cri m i nales, m uertes de poli cías, ataques terrori stas, ti roteos en las escuelas, en conci ertos y otros lugares públi cos. Hasta nos da tem or ver las noti ci as en la televi si ón o escuchar los avances en el radi o por lo que saldrá próxi m am ente. Aunque es fáci l enojarse sobre todo lo que pasa a nuestro alrededor, darse por venci do y perm anecer enojado no es la respuesta. En el Evangeli o cunado Juan di ce?he aquí el Cordero de Di os" (Juan 1:35-42), nos recuerda que Jesús es el cordero qui en di o la vi da por nosotros en cam bi o por nuestros pecados que nos destruyeran. Con el m i sm o espíri tu de nuestro Redentor, los eventos terri bles de hoy en día son una m anera que gri ta que necesi tam os redenci ón. Com enzam os haci éndonos la si gui ente pregunta: Com o Cri sti anos, cuál es la acti tud que tom am os asía otros seres hum anos? San Pedro di ce,? Ignoras que nuestro cuerpo es tem plo del Espíri tu Santo, el cual está en nosotros, el cual es de Di os, y que no es nuestro? Porque hem os si do com prados a un solo preci o" (1 Cori nti os 6:17-20). Cuándo vem os a otros seres hum anos, vem os a una persona que el tem plo del Espíri tu Santo? Una creaci ón de Di os en la cual vi ve Di os? Una persona por la cual, tal vez debajo de vari as capas de debi li dad y pecado, se pueda ver Di os? Entre toda la vi olenci a del m undo, refi ri éndose a otros, Qué es lo que estam os di spuestos a dejarnos ver? Úni cam ente a terrori stas, gente culpable, al enem i go? Valoram os y dem ostram os am or a úni cam ente a los que consi deram os que son com o la i m agen de Di os? Podem os i nclui r en nuestra vi si ón que Di os nos hi so a todos según su i m agen?
