This dissertation is geared around the development and testing of 8 versions of Talking to Avatars, a computerized tutor that incorporates over 200 video-recordings to simulate conversations between the learner and pre-filmed human actors (or avatars ) in reallife situations. These software versions serve to investigate the incidence of three underresearched or controversial variables in second language acquisition: (1) the role of practice, or the pedagogical impact of watching learner-tutor interaction episodes versus taking part in them; (2) the role of computerized oral feedback, per se and in terms of two of its components, the greater or lesser explicitness of the correction and the provision or lack of prompts for learners to repair their errors; and (3) the role of linguistic form, or how the difficulty of two grammatical structures mediates the effects of practice and feedback M.
