Such had been his progress in four years that a gentleman chose him as subpreceptor to his children, and he was thus enabled to continue his studies without being a burden to his parents. In 1596, he went to the University of Toulouse for theological studies, and there he was ordained priest in In 1605, on a voyage by sea from Marseilles to Narbonne, he fell into the hands of African pirates and was carried as a slave to Tunis. His captivity lasted about two years, until Divine Providence enabled him to effect his escape. After a brief visit to Rome he returned to France, where he became preceptor in the family of Emmanuel de Gondy, Count of Goigny, and General of the galleys of France. In 1617, he began to preach missions, and in 1625, he lay the foundations of a congregation which afterward became the Congregation of the Mission or Lazarists, so named on account of the Prioryof St. Lazarus, which the Fathers began to occupy in It would be impossible to enumerate all the works of this servant of God. Charity was his predominant virtue. It extended to all classes of persons, from forsaken childhood to old age. The Sisters of Charity also owe the foundation of their congregation to St. Vincent. In the midst of the most distracting occupations his soul was always intimately united with God. Though honored by the great ones of the world, he remained deeply rooted in humility. The Apostle of Charity, the immortal Vincent de Paul, breathed his last in Paris at the age of eighty. His feast day is September 27th. He is the patron of charitable societies. We do that by opening ourselves more and more to the Holy Spirit, and by becoming more knowledgeable of all our Catholic Church offers us. Both Parents and Godparents are required to attend the Pre- Baptismal Class that will be held on Sunday October 4th, 2015, 6pm-9pm in Sharpe Hall.

3 Dia de San Vicente de Paúl 27 de septiembre Podemos titular la vida de este santo como la vida de los encuentros que fueron moldeando su personalidad hasta convertirla de pastor en el campo a fundador de una de las Congregaciones que más gloria y honra han dado y dan a la Iglesia con las Hijas de la Caridad. Nació en Dax, muy cerca de la frontera española, en la región de las Landas. Sus padres eran muy pobres. Trabajó de pequeño en el campo como pastor. Alguien que vio sus buenas cualidades, lo envió a estudiar a Zaragoza y a Toulouse. Tal fue su aprovechamiento que a los 19 años lo ordenaron de sacerdote. Una edad temprana para este ministerio. Todo el mundo se le abría ante sus ojos como una forma de transformar la sociedad en la que vivía. Se entregó a los pobres de manera completa. En este ingente trabajo le ayudaba María Luisa de Marillac, también santa. Con esta mujer, dotada de cualidades y de grandes virtudes, fundó la Sociedad de las Hijas de la Caridad (1632). Juntamente con esta Sociedad fundó otra para que se encargara de misionar a los habitantes del campo. Serían los Sacerdotes de la Misión (1625). Por eso tuvo una gran preocupación por la formación de los apóstoles del Evangelio. Con este fin creó seminarios. A cualquiera extraño a la obra de Dios en el mundo de las personas que se dejan permear por el Espíritu, esto les puede parecer algo extraño. Vicente mantenía su calma en todo. Solía decir: Estamos convencidos de que en todo y por todo somos un deshecho y de lo más apremiante, a causa de la oposición que ofrecemos de nuestra parte a la santidad y perfecciones de Dios. Con esta actitud no tenía dificultades en ser amigo de los pobres y hasta del mismo rey Luis XIII. Fue amigo y confidente de san Francisco de Sales del que aprendió como D. Bosco la dulzura en el trato con la gente. Murió diciendo estas palabras: Confianza! Jesús!.
