2 Good Shepherd Catholic Church and School May 12, 2013 The Ascension of the Lord Stewardship Thought for the Week Jesus ascended into heaven, blessing His disciples and promising that they would soon receive the power of the Holy Spirit. We who have received that promised gift of the Spirit are now empowered to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth to use our time and talents to spread the good news of salvation. The Ascension of the Lord Acts 1:1-11; Ps 47; Eph 1:17-23 or Heb 9:24-28, 10:19-23; Lk 24:46-53 At the end of his Gospel, St Luke gives a very concise account of the event of the Ascension. Jesus led his disciples out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven. And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God (Lk 24:50-53). I would like to note two elements in the account. First of all, during the Ascension Jesus made the priestly gesture of blessing, and the disciples certainly expressed their faith with prostration, they knelt with bowed heads, this is a first important point: Jesus is the one eternal High Priest who with his Passion passed through death and the tomb and ascended into heaven. He is with God the Father where he intercedes forever in our favor (cf. Heb 9:24). Dear brothers and sisters, we have this Advocate; let us not be afraid to turn to him to ask forgiveness, to ask for a blessing, to ask for mercy! He always pardons us, he is our Advocate: he always defends us! Don t forget this! The Ascension of Jesus into heaven acquaints us with this deeply consoling reality on our journey: in Christ, true God and true man, our humanity was taken to God. Christ opened the path to us. A second element: St Luke says that having seen Jesus ascending into heaven, the Apostles returned to Jerusalem with great joy. This seems to us a little odd. When we are separated from our relatives, from our friends, because of a definitive departure and, especially, death, there is usually a natural sadness in us since we will no longer see their face, no longer hear their voice, or enjoy their love, their presence. The Evangelist instead emphasizes the profound joy of the Apostles. But how could this be? Precisely because, with the gaze of faith they understand that although he has been removed from their sight, Jesus stays with them forever, he does not abandon them and in the glory of the Father supports them, guides them and intercedes for them. The Ascension does not point to Jesus absence, but tells us that he is alive in our midst in a new way. He is no longer in a specific place in the world as he was before the Ascension. He is now in the lordship of God, present in every space and time, close to each one of us. H.H. 3 12 de mayo de 2013 La Ascención del Señor Good Shepherd Catholic Church and School La Ascencion del Señor He 1:1-11; Sal 47; Ef 1:17-23 or Heb 9:24-28, 10:19-23; Lc 24:46-53 Al final de su Evangelio, San Lucas narra el acontecimiento de la Ascensión de modo muy sintético. Jesús llevó a los discípulos hasta cerca de Betania y, levantando sus manos, los bendijo. Y mientras los bendecía, se separó de ellos, y fue llevado hacia el cielo. Ellos se postraron ante Él y se volvieron a Jerusalén con gran alegría; y estaban siempre en el templo bendiciendo a Dios (24, 50-53). Quisiera destacar dos elementos del relato. Ante todo, durante la Ascensión Jesús realiza el gesto sacerdotal de la bendición y con seguridad los discípulos expresan su fe con la postración, se arrodillan inclinando la cabeza. Este es un primer punto importante: Jesús es el único y eterno Sacerdote que, con su Pasión, atravesó la muerte y el sepulcro y resucitó y ascendió al Cielo; está junto a Dios Padre, donde intercede para siempre en nuestro favor (cf. Hb 9, 24). Queridísimos hermanos y hermanas, contamos con este abogado: no tengamos miedo de ir a Él a pedir perdón, bendición, misericordia. Él nos perdona siempre, es nuestro abogado: nos defiende siempre. No olvidéis esto. La Ascensión de Jesús al Cielo nos hace conocer esta realidad tan consoladora para nuestro camino: en Cristo, verdadero Dios y verdadero hombre, nuestra humanidad ha sido llevada junto a Dios; Él nos abrió el camino. Un segundo elemento: San Lucas refiere que los Apóstoles, después de haber visto a Jesús subir al cielo, regresaron a Jerusalén con gran alegría. Esto nos parece un poco extraño. Generalmente cuando nos separamos de nuestros familiares, de nuestros amigos, por un viaje definitivo y sobre todo con motivo de la muerte, hay en nosotros una tristeza natural, porque no veremos más su rostro, no escucharemos más su voz, ya no podremos gozar de su afecto, de su presencia. En cambio el evangelista subraya la profunda alegría de los Apóstoles. Cómo es esto? Precisamente porque, con la mirada de la fe, ellos comprenden que, si bien sustraído a su mirada, Jesús permanece para siempre con ellos, no los abandona y, en la gloria del Padre, los sostiene, los guía e intercede por ellos. La Ascensión no indica la ausencia de Jesús, sino que nos dice que Él vive en medio de nosotros de un modo nuevo; ya no está en un sitio preciso del mundo como lo estaba antes de la Ascensión; ahora está en el señorío de Dios, presente en todo espacio y tiempo, cerca de cada uno de nosotros.
