The man who has food should do the same. We realize that their sacrifices and generosity have made this financial assistance possible. May God reward them. On this Third Sunday of Advent, the liturgy invites us to the joy of the spirit. It does so with the famous antiphon as part of an exhortation of the Apostle Paul: Gaudete in Domino, Rejoice in the Lord always... the Lord is at hand (cf. Phil 4: 4, 5). The first Reading of Mass is also an invitation to joy. The Prophet Zephaniah at the end of the seventh century B.C. spoke to the city of Jerusalem and its people with these words: Sing aloud, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem...! [..] The Lord your God is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory (Zep 3: 14, 17). God himself is portrayed with similar sentiments, as the prophet says: The Lord... will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love... as on a day of festival (Zep 3: 17-18). This promise was fully brought about in the mystery of Christmas, which we shall be celebrating in a week and which asks to be renewed in the today of our lives and of history. The joy that the liturgy reawakens in the hearts of Christians is not reserved for us alone: it is a prophetic proclamation destined for all humanity and for the poorest of the poor in particular, in this case, those poorest in joy! The invitation to rejoice is not an alienating message nor a sterile palliative, but on the contrary, it is a salvific prophecy, an appeal for rescue that starts with inner renewal. To transform the world, God chose a humble young girl from a village in Galilee, Mary of Nazareth, and challenged her with this greeting: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you. In these words lies the secret of an authentic Christmas. God repeats them to the Church, to each one of us: Rejoice, the Lord is close! With Mary's help, let us offer ourselves with humility and courage so that the world may accept Christ, who is the source of true joy. H.H. 3 16 de Diciembre de 2012 Tercer Domingo de Adviento Good Shepherd Catholic Church and School Tercer Domingo de Adviento Zep 3:14-18a; Is 12; Phil 4:4-7; Lk 3:10-18 En este tercer domingo de Adviento la liturgia nos invita a la alegría del espíritu. Lo hace con la célebre antífona que recoge una exhortación del apóstol san Pablo: Gaudete in Domino, Alegraos siempre en el Señor (...). El Señor está cerca (cf. Flp 4, 4-5). También la primera lectura bíblica de la misa es una invitación a la alegría. El profeta Sofonías, al final del siglo VII antes de Cristo, se dirige a la ciudad de Jerusalén y a su población con estas palabras: Regocíjate, hija de Sión; grita de júbilo, Israel; alégrate y gózate de todo corazón, hija de Jerusalén. (...) El Señor tu Dios está en medio de ti como poderoso salvador (So 3, ). A Dios mismo lo representa el profeta con sentimientos análogos: Él se goza y se complace en ti, te renovará con su amor, exultará sobre ti con júbilo, como en los días de fiesta (So 3, 17-18). Esta promesa se realizó plenamente en el misterio de la Navidad, que celebraremos dentro de una semana y que es necesario renovar en el hoy de nuestra vida y de la historia. La alegría que la liturgia suscita en el corazón de los cristianos no está reservada sólo a nosotros: es un anuncio profético destinado a toda la humanidad y de modo particular a los más pobres, en este caso a los más pobres en alegría. La invitación a la alegría no es un mensaje alienante, ni un estéril paliativo, sino más bien una profecía de salvación, una llamada a un rescate que parte de la renovación interior. Para transformar el mundo Dios eligió a una humilde joven de una aldea de Galilea, María de Nazaret, y le dirigió este saludo: Alégrate, llena de gracia, el Señor está contigo. En esas palabras está el secreto de la auténtica Navidad. Dios las repite a la Iglesia, a cada uno de nosotros: Alegraos, el Señor está cerca. Con la ayuda de María, entreguémonos nosotros mismos, con humildad y valentía, para que el mundo acoja a Cristo, que es el manantial de la verdadera alegría. S.S.
