Course Description: SPAN S-130: Intermediate Spanish I is an intensive intermediate course in spoken and written Spanish that meets daily from Monday through Friday. Conducted in Spanish. Admits to L5 courses. Not open to students who have completed SPAN 130a or b or 140a or b. The course uses a task-based approach to develop proficiency by integrating grammar and vocabulary in communicative activities. Discussions, role-plays, debates, and other classroom activities are based on readings and films. All readings are of authentic Spanish-language texts, including stories, newspaper articles, and poems. III. Expanded Description: This program has two four-week components: the first month is conducted on the Yale campus; and the second, in Quito, Ecuador. Students will further develop their linguistic skills in Spanish and increase their understanding of the language and culture of Ecuador within an intensive immersion program. In the study of grammar, special attention will be paid to the subjunctive, direct and indirect objects, preterit/imperfect contrast, reflexive structures, and other points, the improvement of which will be reinforced through classroom conversation, workbook exercises, writing activities, oral and written exams, the viewing, discussion and written analysis of films and videos, readings of poems and stories. IV. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to perform proficiently at an intermediate level in the following language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In addition, the student will gain a deeper understanding of cultural and historical aspects of the Spanish-speaking world. V. Course Policies: A. Attendance: Regular attendance is crucial to the successful attainment of the course objectives. Therefore, University policy requires that students attend classes on a daily basis. You may not miss any scheduled evaluations and/or homework. If you must miss classes due to illness, you must notify your

2 SPAN130 Summer 2015 TENTATIVE 2 instructor within 24 hours. There will be no make-up exams due to unexcused absences, and the final course grade will be lowered 2 points for each unexcused absence. Punctuality is expected of each student, and if tardiness becomes a problem, the instructors reserve the right to lower the grade accordingly. If, for any reason, the instructor is not in the classroom at the scheduled time, please wait 15 minutes before calling YSS to confirm that she is not coming on that day. B. Audio-visual Work (films): Films are a very important aspect of the course. The film worksheets will be graded. More information regarding the viewing of the films will be provided at the appropriate time. C. Class Discussions: In the interest of stimulating conversation, some controversial topics will be discussed in the course. After entering the site, you will find the textbook audio in a box on the right hand side of the page called "student tools".
