CAPITULO 3
Present tense of regular -ar verbs In English Verbs are words that express actions or states of being. The endings of most verbs do not change, unless the subject (the doer of the action) is he, she, it, or a single person, such as Rosa or my friend. Since other forms have no endings that tell who the doer is, the subject pronouns cannot be left out. I eat dinner at 6, but you eat at 8. He sings well, but she sings badly. Here are the subject pronouns and their corresponding forms for the verb to sing. I sing we sing you sing you sing he, she,it sings they sing
Present tense of regular -ar verbs In Spanish Every verb has a stem which tells the meaning of the verb. Verb endings change according to the subject. (For this reason, the subject pronouns are often left out.) Changing the endings is called conjugating the verb. To give the verb a subject, you conjugate it. To conjugate a verb means to manipulate the infinitive so that it agrees with the different possible subjects.
Present tense of regular -ar verbs Since the ending of the verb usually tells the subject, the subject pronoun is normally left out. Cantan ustedes mucho? No, casi nunca cantamos. Do you sing a lot? No, we hardly ever sing. Use subject pronouns to add emphasis, or when it wouldn t otherwise be clear who the subject is. Patinan ustedes mucho? Do you skate a lot? Ellos patinan. Yo nunca patino. They skate. I never skate.
Present tense of regular -ar verbs When the infinitive ends in ar, drop the ar ending and attach the following endings: cantar to sing Yo canto Nosotros(as) cantamos Tú Ud., él, ella cantas canta Vosotros(as) Uds., ellos, ellas cantais cantan As you can see, to conjugate regular -ar verbs, simply drop the ending (-ar) and add one of the following: o, as, a, amos, ais, and an
Present tense of ir The -ar verbs you have learned are called regular verbs because their conjugations all follow a predictable pattern. Some verbs such as ir (to go) are called irregular, because they do not follow a clear pattern. Ir to go Yo voy Nosotros(as) vamos Tú Ud., él, ella vas va Vosotros(as) Uds., ellos, ellas vais van Adónde vas los sábados? Voy a la piscina.
Present tense of jugar The verb jugar (to play a sport or game) has regular endings, but the vowel in the stem changes to in all but the nosotros and vosotros forms. jugar to play Yo juego Nosotros(as) jugamos Tú Ud., él, ella juegas juega Vosotros(as) Uds., ellos, ellas jugais juegan
The preposition a The preposition a is used after ir to mean to. A is also used after jugar with a sport. When a is followed by el, the two words combine to form the contraction al. Use adónde? to ask where to. Adónde van los domingos? Vamos al gimnasio. Jugamos al básquetbol.
Weather expressions Many expressions for the weather begin with the word hace, a form of the verb hacer. Qué tiempo hace Hace buen/mal tiempo Hace fresco What s the weather like? The weather is nice/bad It s cool. Hace calor. Hace frío. Hace sol. Hace viento.
Weather expressions The verb llover means to rain and the verb nevar means to snow. Use llueve to say it rains and nieva to say it snows. Llueve. Adónde vas cuando llueve? Qué haces cuando nieva? Nieva. Cuando llueve, no voy a ninguna parte. Cuando nieva, juego con los amigos.
Hace Llueve. Hace nieva.
