6 To talk about what you and others like to do, use the verb gustar (to like). Remember gustar is a special kind of verb that requires a pronoun. Let s review the pronouns we use with gustar: GUSTAR Pronouns me (me) nos (us) te (you) os (you) le (him/her) les (them) + Form of GUSTAR Most often: - GUSTA (singular) - GUSTAN (plural) For example: A Juan le gusta el baloncesto. A mí me gustan los gatos. Baloncesto is singular, so you use gusta. Juan is the person that likes basketball, so you use the pronoun LE. Los gatos is plural, so I use gustan. I am the person that likes cats, so I use the pronoun ME When you use the verb gustar with other verbs to say what you like to do, always remember that: o The form will always be gusta no matter how many verbs you put after it! 8 El presente Use the present tense to talk about what you and others regularly do throughout the present. Yo estudio por la noche. Mis amigos y yo practicamos después de clases. To conjugate a verb in the present tense, take off the AR/-ER/-IR and add the appropriate ending to match the subject. Let s review the present tense endings! -AR Verbs Yo -o Nosotros -amos Tú -as Vosotros -áis Ella -a -an toman muchas fotos. -ER Verbs Yo -o Nosotros -emos Rita lee muchos libros. Stem-Changing Verbs: When a verb has a stem change, it means that the vowel in the middle of the verb changes when it is put into its different forms. There are 3 types of stem changes in the present: o E-IE For example: QUERER Yo quiero Tú quieres Nosotros queremos Vosotros queréis Ella quiere quieren Claudia quiere jugar en la Ud. Uds. tableta. o E-I For example: VESTIR Yo visto Nosotros vestimos Tú vistes Vosotros vestís Ella Ud. viste Uds. visten Sofía viste a su hijo por la mañana. Sch. Spanish 3, Profa Jenkins 9
10 o O-UE For example: DORMIR Yo duermo Nosotros dormimos Tú duermes Vosotros dormís Ella Ud. duerme Uds. duermen Por qué duermes (tú) en la clase? Stem changing verbs are called boot verbs because you only stem change the forms inside the boot. The nosotros and vosotros forms NEVER stem change, as seen in the examples above. Even when a verb has a stem change, you still MUST drop the AR, -ER or IR and add the appropriate verb ending to agree with the subject. Make sure you use the correct endings based on what kind of verb it is (-AR, -ER, or IR)!!! Irregular Yo Verbs: Some verbs are irregular in the yo form but all their other forms are regular. Some common irregular yo forms are: hacer (to do/make) yo hago poner (to put/place) yo pongo salir (to leave/go out) yo salgo traer (to bring) yo traigo tener (to have) yo tengo decir (to say/tell) yo digo saber (to know) yo sé ver (to see) yo veo Sch. 11 For example: Irregular in the yo form! Yo veo televisión en mis ratos libres. Mis amigos y yo vemos televisión los fines de semana. Regular in other forms! Reflexive Verbs: When someone does something to himself/herself, a reflexive verb is used: Luisa se baña. María baña a su hijo. REFLEXIVE! Luisa bathes herself. NOT REFLEXIVE! María bathes her son. So what s the difference between a reflexive verb and a non-reflexive verb? Reflexive verbs are accompanied by a reflexive pronoun. (As you see in the example above, baña is accompanied by the pronoun se in the reflexive sentence.) When listed in the dictionary, reflexive verbs often appear with the pronoun se on the end to indicate that they are reflexive (cepillarse, despertarse, vestirse, etc.) Sch. 12 Let s look at the six reflexive pronouns in Spanish. REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS Yo me (myself) Nosotros nos (ourselves) Tú te (yourself) Vosotros os (yourselves) Ella se (himself/ herself) se (themselves) So how do you conjugate a reflexive verb in the present tense? 1) Move the pronoun directly before the verb and change it to match the subject. 2) Drop the -AR, -ER or -IR on the end of the verb and add the appropriate ending...just like any other verb! Yo me cepillo el pelo. cepillarse se cepillar me cepillar me cepillo Roberto se pone la corbata. Yo me despierto a las 6:00. Some reflexive verbs also have a stem change!!! Sch. 13 Totally Irregular Verbs: Some verbs are completely irregular! Some common totally irregular verbs in Spanish are ser (to be), estar (to be), and ir (to go). We ve already reviewed the verb ser.
