4 The verb estar The ar verbs you have used until now are called regular verbs because they follow a regular pattern. Verbs that do not follow a regular pattern are called irregular verbs. (yo) estoy (nosotros) estamos (nosotras) (tú) estás (vosotros) estáis (vosotras) Usted (él) está Ustedes. (ellos) están (ella) (ellas) Estar is irregular because the yo form doesn t follow a regular pattern. Note that the forms: estás, está, estáis and están require accent marks. You have used the verb estar to ask how someone is. Cómo estás tú? Cómo está usted? Estar has three uses in Spanish: Present condition, Present location, and Present progressive. * Present condition Estoy bien. I m fine Marta está furiosa. * Present location Estamos en Eureka. Dónde estás? Marta is furious. We are in Eureka. Where are you? Use estar to tell how someone feels or where someone or something is located. 04/06/ :04:59 p.m. 4

6 The verb ir is almost always followed by a. Yo voy a la escuela. I go to school. To ask where someone is going, use Adónde? Adónde vas? Where are you going (to)? You will often hear people say Vamos! This means, Let s go! or let s. Simple future tense: Ir + a + infinitive Just as you use going + an infinitive in English to say what you are going to do, in Spanish you use a form of the verb ir + a + and infinitive to express the same thing: ir + a + infinitive (yo) (tú) Usted (él) (ella) voy a (infinitive) vas a (infinitive) va a (infinitive) (nosotros) vamos a (infinitive) (nosotras) (vosotros) váis a (infinitive) (vosotras) Ustedes (ellos) van a (infinitive) (ellas) Yo voy a hacer la tarea. My friends are going camping tomorrow. ir a + infinitive is used to talk about what you are going to do. Yo voy a estudiar. Ir a + place is used to talk about where you are going. Yo voy a la escuela. 1. Yo como una hamburguesa. Yo voy a una hamburguesa mañana. 2. Vamos. Vamos a esta tarde. 3. Paco regresa a México. Paco va a a México la semana que viene. 4. La familia visita la universidad. La familia va a la universidad hoy. 5. Las vampiresas beben la sangre. Las vampiresas van a la sangre esta noche. 6. Asistes al concierto. The first verb does the talking. (i.e. in verb pairs, only the first verb is conjugated and the second stays in the infinitive) Common Infinitive Phrases Prepositional phrases are generally followed by an infinitive. Such as: Antes de+ infinitive Before + infinitive Después de + infinitive After + infinitive Me gusta + infinitivo I like + infinitive Deber + infinitive Should + infinitive Necesitar + infinitive To need to + infinitive Tener que + infinitive To have to + infinitive Ir + a + infinitive to be going to do something (in the near future) Ejemplos: Ustedes necesitan estudiar mucho para las pruebas.
