1 Title 1 School-Level Parental Involvement Policy Woodrow Wilson Elementary This Title 1 parental involvement policy was developed with input from Title 1 parents. Parent involvement policy was presented to ELAC and School Site Council. Parents gave input and the Parent Involvement Policy was developed, discussed, and approved for distribution from ELAC and School Site Council. It has distributed the policy to parents of Title 1 students. The Parental Involvement Policy is sent home in both English and Spanish with students. We do the following: Involvement of Parents in the Title 1 Program Convene an annual meeting to inform parents of Title 1 students of the Title 1 requirements and their rights to be involved in the Title 1 program. At the beginning of each school year, at Back to School Night, a Title 1 informational meeting is held to inform parents about Title 1 program and program requirements. Wilson Elementary has an active ELAC and School Site Council program which enables parents to be active participants and in the use of Title I funds at our school. Parents are given up-to-date information regarding use of Title I funds and are encouraged to give feedback and strategize ways to improve student performance. Offer a flexible number of meetings. There are monthly ELAC and School Site Council meetings held at Wilson throughout the year. Parents are invited to attend monthly meetings. Involve parents of Title 1 students in an organized, ongoing, and timely way, in the planning, review, and improvement of its Title 1 programs and the Title 1 Parental Involvement Policy. Parents are asked for their input and discussions are held at monthly ELAC and School Site Council meetings. Provide parents of Title 1 students with timely information about Title 1 programs. Information about Title I programs are sent home through flyers, newsletters and Principal Messages. Wilson provides students with student binders, planners and homework folders to support strong communication between parents and the school. Provide parents of Title 1 students with an explanation of the curriculum, assessments, and proficiency levels students are expected to meet. Curriculum, assessments and proficiency levels of students are reviewed and explained at Back to School Night, parent conferences, and Response to Intervention (RTI) meetings. Provide parents of Title 1 students, if requested, with opportunities for regular meetings to participate in decisions relating to the education of their children. Parents are notified through phone calls, flyers, newsletters and posted meeting agendas regarding monthly ELAC and School Site Council Meetings. School Parent Compact Our school has jointly developed and distributed to parents a school-parent compact that outlines how parents, the entire school staff and students share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement. It also describes how the school and parents will develop partnerships to help children reach proficiency on the California content standards. The school-parent compact describes the following items in addition to items added by parents. The school s responsibility to provide high-quality curriculum and instruction

2 The parents responsibility to support their children s learning. The importance of ongoing communication between parents and teacher through, at least, annual conferences, reports on student progress, access to staff, and opportunities to volunteer and participate in and observe the educational program. The School Parent Compact was created, edited, and discussed at both ELAC and SSC meetings. Parents hold discussions and provide input to the school compact if necessary during the meetings. The compact is distributed to teachers to be used at initial parent/teacher conferences at the end of trimester 1. Building Capacity for Involvement Parents are engaged in meaningful interactions with the school. It supports a partnership among staff, parents, and the community to improve student academic achievement. To help reach these goals, the school does assist parents in understanding academic common core standards, assessments, and how to monitor and improve the achievement of their children. Each semester there will be opportunities for Wilson parents to participate in parental involvement events on campus. (e.g. Parent Teacher Association(PTA), Latino Literacy, parent-teacher conferences). Materials and training is provided to help parents work with their children to improve their children s achievement. Wilson also provides materials, such as: student binders, planners, homework folders and meetings are offered. With the assistance of parents, staff is educated in the value of parent contributions and how to work with parents as equal partners. At staff meetings, information is distributed and discussed with teachers through PTA participation and representatives on ELAC and School Site Council. The Title 1 parental involvement program is coordinated and integrated with other programs and the school conducts other activities, such as parent resource centers, that encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children. Parents are invited and encouraged to participate in Wilson s Parent Open Library hours, participate in Latino Literacy classes and attend Computer Lab open hours. Information related to school and parent programs, meetings and other activities is distributed to parents in a form and language that the parents understand. All flyers, newsletters and communications are translated before sending home. Translators are available during parent conferences, Title 1 information meetings, Student Academic Meetings and ELAC meetings. Parental involvement activities requested by parents are supported. PTA regularly holds family nights, parent information nights, festivals to involve staff, students and their families. Accessibility All parents, including parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory students are provided with opportunities to participate. This includes providing information and school reports in a form and language parents understand. Wilson Elementary takes pride in sending out all teacher communications to parents in both English and Spanish. Information including Williams Act, School Site Council and ELAC agendas, and PTA Meetings, are posted in the office in both English and Spanish. Blackboard Connect communications are utilized to give instant information to all parents. The Blackboard Connect is broadcast to parents in both English and Spanish.
