Galvez. I was born in Mexico. I came to the United States with my mother, two brothers, and two sisters to live with my father, who was already living in Fillmore, California. I have been an ESL instructor at Mission College for more than twenty years, but I still enjoy the beginning of a new school year because every new school year is a new experience. In my ESL class you will learn English grammar and vocabulary. You will also participate in discussion and conversation groups where you can practice the grammar and vocabulary learned because English is a living language, so you must use it. Course Description: The students in the ESL 1 class will build vocabulary development and pronunciation and simple grammar through simple conversations in English. Students will also do short simplified reading passages and sentence writing skills putting into practice the grammar, vocabulary, and expressions learned in class. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, 1- Students will produce writing that incorporates low-beginning grammatical structures 2- Students will compose simple sentences 3- Students will read and comprehend simple texts. 4- Students will analyze and use vocabulary at a low-beginning level. 5- Students will follow simple directions and respond to basic questions and commands. 6- Students will participate in simple conversations on a familiar topic.

Class Attendance Students must attend class every day and stay for the entire class. Students must try to make their appointments after class or on a day we do not have classes. Students should have the phone numbers of at least three other students in the class, so they may obtain classwork or homework they miss the day they are absent or to study together. If you miss more than four days of instruction you may be dropped from the class unless the absences are valid medical reasons. Assignments: Students will have homework assignments every day to practice what they have learned in class. Classwork and homework will count toward the final grade. It is the student s responsibility to do all the homework even if it is not always collected. Classroom Rules: 1-Respect everyone in class. Respect the instructor and the students. ````````````Do not laugh or make comments about other student s participation. Raise your hand to speak or wait until the person speaking is finished. 2-Turn off your cell phones or leave them on vibrate during class. 3-No copying or talking during quizzes or exams 4-No eating or drinking in class. Only bottled water in class is acceptable Grading: This class is graded Credit/No Credit. Students will receive credit for the class if they receive 65% of the credit based on the following grading: Midterm and Final Exam: 50% Quizzes: 20% Homework: 15% Participation: 15% Semester Schedule: One Unit in the textbook will be covered every two weeks. There are 8 units in the textbook. There will be a quiz after every unit. There will also be a Midterm Exam and a Final Exam.
