For too many Americans, the Fourth of July is just another summer holiday, albeit one that usually features fireworks. For Christians, the issue of patriotism is always complicated by our citizenship in two realms, one earthly and one heavenly. The Bible teaches that we have duties to our earthly nation, including obeying laws, paying taxes, and honoring our leaders (Romans 13:1-7). At the same time, we are subjects of the eternal kingdom of Christ. Jesus said, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar s, and to God the things that are God s (Matthew 22:21). This dual citizenship presents serious complications when the civil and the divine authorities strongly conflict. This was the situation the early believers faced in Jerusalem, resulting in their persecution. Peter told the Jewish leaders, We must obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29), and for his disobedience he was beaten and later threatened with execution (Acts 5:40; 12:1-6). While our two kingdoms citizenship always warrants biblical reflection, the situation facing Christians in America today demands special wisdom and grace. Throughout our lifetime, there have been two competing Americas, one theistic and the other atheistic; one which more or less respects our Christian heritage and upholds general biblical values, and one which aggressively opposes biblical morality and a godly outlook on life. As we reflect on the what is means to be free this fourth of July, may we all give thanks to God that we can live in a country that is free and that we all have been given freedom as well in Jesus Christ. Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.'... He was amazed at their lack of faith." (Mark 6:4, 6) Some might call it a "chance" encounter - our paths intersected in the middle of the school parking lot. One day earlier she had asked me to "hold her accountable" for what she was going to do following the homily that she had just heard. I wrote myself a note on a "yellow sticky" praying that I would not forget.... From the Catholic Dictionary: The biblical term prophet (nabi), means one who speaks, acts or writes under the influence of God. From our Catechism: Christ, high priest and unique mediator, has made of the Church "a kingdom, priests for his God and Father." The whole community of believers is, as such, priestly. The faithful exercise their baptismal priesthood through their participation, each according to his own vocation, in Christ's mission as priest, prophet, and king. (1546) From our Parish Family: Thankfully, I remembered to ask her! The homilist had challenged the assembly to consider praying the rosary each day in response to our bishops' plea for prayer during the "Fortnight for Freedom" that ends this weekend. She took the suggestion a BIG and BOLD step further! She told me that she got a bunch of rosaries and took them to a family gathering. She gave them out to each person present with the admonition that, "even if you don't pray it, put it someplace where you can see it and throw one up when you look at it...." Wow! The readings this weekend remind us that we are all called to be prophets. As you know so very well, this calling often takes great courage, especially in our native place and among our own kin and in our own house. I think that Jesus is very pleased with the woman in the parking lot and with so many of you who live this calling every day. Thank you! Deacon Steve PS. We welcome to St. Irenaeus our new parochial vicar, Fr. Rudolph Rudy Alumam. Fr. Rudy was born in Takoradi, Ghana on June 23, 1963. He is the second of three surviving children (two boys, one girl) of his parents. His father, Ayuure Alumam, passed away two years ago (2013) and his mother lives with his brother in a village called Vea in northern Ghana. Fr. Rudy grew up in this village until he went to a boarding high school within the same state in 1977. Desiring to become a priest, he was admitted to St. Victor s Major Seminary in 1985 to study Philosophy and Theology, and was ordained priest on July 20, 1991 for the Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga. He was assigned to be chaplain and spiritual director in a high school seminary where he also taught Geography and Religious Studies. In 1999 Fr. Rudy and another priest were asked to begin a post-high school formation program to prepare seminarians for philosophical studies. After two years of ministry in this seminary, Fr. Rudy traveled to California to study Psychology at the California State University, Eastbay and Christian Spirituality at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley. During his time in California he lived and served at St. Bede Church, Hayward, CA. He returned to his country, Ghana, in 2005 and has since been working in the provincial major seminary as teacher and formator. After ten years of ministry in the seminary, Fr. Rudy is looking forward to a ministry with the parishioners of St. Irenaeus. Ezekiel is rejected by Israel. Paul has a thorn in the flesh, (2 Corinthians 4:7) some kind of difficulty that keeps him humble. Jesus cannot work miracles in his hometown because the people lack faith. The people in today s Gospel who reject Jesus (and so cannot benefit from his teaching and healing) think they already know who he is, but they ve judged him without really knowing him. Have you ever been rejected or felt judged? It can be a pretty bitter experience, especially when it comes from people you expect to accept you. Or sometimes someone decides that you are not worth their time because they see you as different in some way. To help break down the preconceived notions we can have about each other, in youth ministry we sometime use the sentence starter, If people really knew me they would know that.... As people fill in the blank they often find they have a lot more in common than they thought, even with people who are different from them. ACTION Get to know someone this week maybe someone you had decided wasn t worth your time at first glance. Overcome the boundaries or preconceived notions you had about them and break the ice with some basic get-to-know-you questions. Stretch your comfort zone a little, you may be surprised or challenged in some really great ways. It was named after the school s Principal at the time, Sister Margarita. Since it s inception, the award has been given to athletes that have played on two sports in one year and displayed outstanding Christian Citizenship and Academic Excellence. A gift is something given willingly without an expectation of payment; a present. A gift in scripture had three general meanings: gifts men gave to men; sacrificial offerings presented to God; gifts God gave to men, especially in connection with salvation and grace. What are your gifts from God? What did he give you so willingly as a present? A few St. Irenaeus parishioners took a Called and Gifted Workshop last month to help discern our God-given gifts, or charisms. We learned that a charism is a spiritually gratuitous gift given by the Holy Spirit to all baptized Christians. Each of us has one or more charisms. Charisms are used for the benefit of others and the service of God. When we use our charisms they energize us. Why discern your charisms? Knowing your charisms can help you live a more joyful life, fulfilling the purpose to which God has called you. You can simplify your life and decide what you should pursue in terms of a vocation and volunteering. Because we have different charisms, we cannot do it all. We need the help of others and their charisms to build an enterprise. The larger the enterprise, the more people/charisms are needed to make it succeed. What enterprise is larger and more worthwhile than the Church, the Body of Christ? ( Now you are Christ s body, and individually parts of it. 1 Cor 12:27) What is our gift to God for the charisms we have received from the Holy Spirit? By knowing our charisms we can better interact with our family members, decide what parish ministries could best use our charisms, perhaps find a more fulfilling job, glorifying God when we use our charisms.
