August 12, 2012 Nineteenth Sunday in ordinary time Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary On Wednesday, August 15, we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed (taken up) body and soul into heavenly glory. She was exalted by the Lord as Queen of Heaven and Earth, and in this Assumption Mary was the first to experience the bodily Resurrection that is promised to all who believe in Christ. Our Mary altar (pictured right) depicts Mary, above the clouds, with arm raised, being taken up into heaven. 2699 Peachtree Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30305 404-233-2145 www.cathedralofchristtheking.org WHAT S INSIDE: Around the Parish Page 2 New Parishioners Page 3 Confirmation Meeting Page 4 Nursery Position Open Page 5 CTK Youth Choirs Page 6 Upcoming CHRP Retreats Page 9 Hispanic Pages Pages 10-11 We have no real knowledge of the day, year, and manner of Our Lady's death. The dates which have been assigned to her death vary between three and fifteen years after Jesus Ascension. For hundreds of years, Catholics observed the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary -- but it was not until 1950 that the Church proclaimed this teaching a dogma of the Church -- one of the essential beliefs of the Catholic faith. Dear Parishioners, We are saddened to say goodbye to two of our clergy staff who have departed from CTK. Deacon Paul Root has returned to his hometown of Lexington, Kentucky where he will be an instructor at the law enforcement training academy for Kentucky and assigned to the Cathedral of Christ the King for his deaconate. Our seminarian Valery Akoh has been accepted for the Archdiocese and is preparing to make a new home in Chicago. I want to personally thank Deacon Paul and Valery for what they have done for our Christ the King parish family. I wish them God s blessings and I know that they will be missed. Yours in Christ, Fr. Frank McNamee Pastor Continued on Page 7

Stewardship of Treasure How shall I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? Psalm 116 In today s First Reading, God provides a weary and distressed prophet Elijah with physical food and drink to sustain him on his pilgrimage to Mt. Horeb. In St. John s Gospel, Jesus proclaims He is the spiritual Bread of Life. Those who eat this bread will not die, but live forever. As we partake of the Lord s consecrated Body and Blood, we become one in discipleship with Him. St. Paul teaches us to follow the way of love through Christ. On our journey to eternal life, our Lord gives us grace to live good Christian lives by making stewardship a way of life. NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 12, 2012 Liturgical/Music Ministry Festival As the summer season begins to come to an end and the new academic year begins, we also are reminded of the new beginnings of our church year. Our annual procession of faith from Ordinary time through Advent and Christmas followed by winter s darkness and Lent culminating in the great feast of Easter are signals and signs of our spiritual passage as well. At this time of new beginnings Christ the King encourages all to participate in this great procession by becoming part of the many ministries that make the Cathedral such a rich community of faith. On the weekend of August 25 and 26 the Cathedral s Liturgical Ministries and Music Ministry will be seeking new members interested in giving of their time and their talent. If you think you might have an interest in participating, there is always a great need for Lectors, Extra-ordinary Ministers of the Holy Eucharist, Ushers and Altar Servers (Youth and Adult,) at ALL Masses. There are also several specialized and vitally important Guilds that support various aspects of Christ the King s liturgical life that always need new members.the Wedding Guild, Linen Guild, Flower Guild and Sacristan s Guild. And, of course, the Cathedral s Ministry of Music also supports the prayer life of the parish and is always looking for those willing to share their talents. The Cathedral parish is rich in the diversity of its members and is enriched by the wealth of its ministry opportunities. We encourage and welcome those willing to share their gifts and their talents with the great family that is Christ the King. Come see us in the Gathering Space after all the Masses on the weekend of August 25 and 26. This calling to the ministry of catechist is a vocation. That call is the voice of the Holy Spirit. (NDC, 228) The word catechist comes from a Greek root word that means to echo. Through your life and your teaching as a catechist you are a person who echoes the Word of God. Catechists teach through their words and example to help nurture the spiritual growth of our young children. The four aims of catechesis are: 1) To proclaim the Christian message; 2) To prepare for Prayer and Worship; 3) To build community; 4) To motivate for Christian living and service. Preparation and training includes introduction to content, understanding of catechetical process and spiritual growth opportunities. Classes begin on Sept. 9. Contact Anne Boshinski for more information, abosh@ctking.com. Recreation Needed: Coaches Recreation is still looking for coaches for Girls on the Run, Girls on Track and Volleyball. Without volunteers these programs wouldn t be possible! For more information, contact Adrian Stevens at astevens@ctking.com. 9

Sigamos Sus enseñanzas paso a paso: Primero.
