WHITTIER ELEMENTARY PTA MEETING Meeting Minutes April 10, 2014 Attendance: Kevin Claunch, Brandi Curtis, Dorothy Draper, Sierra Fichialos, Kim Hill, Robert Palmer, & Margery Parker Welcome - Kim Hill o April is Month of the Military Child 15 students represented & growing. The board outside the cafeteria looks great! The PTA would like more pictures. o PTA Board for 2014-15 Recruiting Reflections chair, Box Tops rep Angie will be leaving Whittier next year! The PTA would like to do something for her years of service. Patricia will also be moving & will no longer be able to be our Reflections chair. Maybe the art teacher, Shawn Westrup, would be interested? Sierra will find, update & arrange to print something in the WW. Treasury Report Sierra Fichialos o Current balance: $1,081.43 o Fieldtrip funds Accountability Deb will gather this information this year & Margery will share it at the next PTA meeting. o Sierra will inventory the PTA shirts to see what we have for Back To School next fall. BoxTops Angie McDougall o Status of fall submission check was lost or cashed. Further investigation is needed since it was almost $1,000. o The final contest will be a 2-week challenge starting the Friday after Spring Break. Classes can earn free Otter Pops & Brandi will check with teachers to find out the least disrupting way to distribute them. Membership/participation Amy Whittemore
o Membership drive update - 65 (35 teachers & staff!) Reflections o 2014-15 Theme: The World Would be a Better Place if Commissioner Julie Stewart o Love Utah Give Utah earned $5,355! A HUGE thanks to Julie Stewart & the Westminster Sociology Team! o Service Learning Project update: Julie was unable to attend but Robert Palmer stated that it s wonderful to have them around & that they are a great help! Other Items o Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week is May 5 th 9 th Sierra will e-mail the staff for baby pictures to hang up for a game. o Walk-a-thon June 2, 2014 Margery worked up a schedule of 3 groups, 9 stations, 12 min. per station w/ the older & younger grades separated. She will get a copy to Brandi for review. The kick-off video was filmed today & will air May 8 th, the same day the donation envelopes go home. Funds will be due on May 27 th w/ prizes being distributed that Friday, the 30 th. 75% participation = free dress day on June 2 nd 85% participation = free dress days on both June 2rd & 3 rd Ideas were sought in how to celebrate reaching our $10,000 goal. Sprinklers? No firetruck, a secret surprise? A jar will be set up in the front office soliciting ideas from the students. One potential prize would be for the top 1-2 students per class to be released to go play a dance video game. A donation list is being compiled to track what is given to Whittier. Brandi passed around a letter & encouraged everyone to use it to solicit donations for the walk-a-thon. She also asked for business suggestions for her to approach.
o Utah PTA Convention @ BYU, May 15 th 16 th o Back to School Night will be added to the May agenda. Teacher s Report Robert Palmer o Robert reiterated how much he appreciates the Westminster students. Principal s Report Margery Parker o $400 Kids for Education will buy 3 hockey sets for PE & will arrive in 10 weeks. o The music program has been funded for this year so we re where we want to be in fundraising for the upcoming year. Approximate funds came from: pictures, last year s walk-a-thon, popcorn Fridays, & the student account o 6 th grade promotion activity is May 27 th w/ the 6 th grade teachers b-ball game on the last day, June 3 rd o The Talent Show is Thursday, May 29 th o Friday, May 30 th is the 5 th grade singing performance School Community Council Next Meeting: May 15 th, 2014 at 5:30 in Library
