Page 2 ST. RITA CATHOLIC CHURCH, DADE CITY, FLORIDA October 22, 2017 FAITH FORMATION Mission at the heart of the Christian faith Once again this year, World Mission Day gathers us around the person of Jesus, the very first and greatest evangelizer (Paul VI, Evangelii Nuntiandi, 7), who continually sends us forth to proclaim the Gospel of the love of God the Father in the power of the Holy Spirit. This Day invites us to reflect anew on the mission at the heart of the Christian faith. The Church is missionary by nature; otherwise, she would no longer be the Church of Christ, but one group among many others that soon end up serving their purpose and passing away. So it is important to ask ourselves certain questions about our Christian identity and our responsibility as believers in a world marked by confusion, disappointment and frustration, and torn by numerous fratricidal wars that unjustly target the innocent. What is the basis of our mission? What is the heart of our mission? What are the essential approaches we need to take in carrying out our mission? Page 3 www.stritaparish.org October 22, 2017 FROM THE Brothers and sisters: PRIESTS DESK As we continue to experience the astonishing effects of nature s fury, our prayers are offered for those who have been affected by the hurricanes and earthquakes in the Caribbean and Mexico, and also for the many victims of the dreadful fires in California. We pray and hope that those who have survived these painful events, those who have lost their loved ones, including homes and other properties, may find the necessary help from governments and the consoling solidarity of their neighbors. There are many deep divisions between Caesar and God, between earthly kingdoms and the Kingdom of heaven. In today s Gospel, the Pharisees disciples and the Herodians raise what amounts to a minor division when they raise the question of paying the census tax to Caesar. Seeing through their subterfuge, Jesus turns the tables around and entangles them with the Truth; for the way of God is not found in opposing civil and religious realms, but in acting as Jesus would in both areas of life. Jesus quickly dispatches this false divide between realms in which we live. He commands his hearers to give to each realm what properly belongs to it. What deeply divides the person is a duplicitous heart, a heart that is not consistent with the truth. This division is truly a wound. This deepest divide is what Jesus came to heal, for those who wish to be healed. The Lord is our Physician; he heals the infirmities of our body and soul and the origin of this grace is love. Consequently, he nourishes his disciples in love and in it we are preserved, (ST. Thomas Aquinas, Super Evangelium Sancti Matthaei Lectura). In Christ, Fr.
