Week of November 9, 2014 YOUTH PAGE Page Four So what in the WORLD is today s feast about? THE FEAST OF THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA IN ROME Wow, that s a mouthful to say. But it is an interesting feast, recognizing the Cathedral of Rome, which is the church of the Bishop of Rome, who is the Pope. It is the oldest and number one among the four Basilicas of the Pope, and considered the oldest church in the West, being founded in 324. That s a long time ago! Our church buildings are importance places. They give us somewhere to gather as a community, to celebrate each week and on special feast days like Our Lady of Guadalupe or a family wedding. They cost a lot of money to keep up, especially when repairs are needed like on the Holy Cross towers. But the buildings help us stay together. Its important to remember too, though, that the Church is more than the buildings. Some years ago a priest named Avery Dulles talked about six models of Church. Think about them: Church as Institution: This is the structure of the church pope, bishops, priests, people. Church as Community: Believers who come together as a sign of the connection of God with people. Church as Sacrament: God made visible in our world through the community of believers. Church as Herald: People who put their faith into words. Church as Servant: People who are called to act to bring about God s kingdom of peace, justice, love and reconciliation. Church as School of Discipleship: Where we learn to follow Jesus, and help others to do so too. Which one fits best with your experience? Which one inspires you more? Which do you think our neighborhood needs most? If you re a high school student (or college student) who DOES get good grades, you might want to spend some time helping younger children! Our after-school program, for 1st through 12th graders, meets Mondays through Fridays, 3-6 pm. Can you offer an hour or two of your time each week to help a student with his/her homework? Call Mary Gomez, 773-376-3900, for more information. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! With Thanksgiving coming up in the following weeks and Christmas on the horizon, we are in special need of help in providing services for those less fortunate during these times. Some of the programs which need the most help are the Food Pantry and Kids Café, which provide so many meals during these times of giving. Call Sister Joellen at 376-9425 to help at the Food Pantry, or Yolanda at 376-3900 to help at Kid s Café. DID YOU KNOW? That HIV is a virus that weakens the infected person s immune system That HIV develops into AIDS That a person cannot tell if another person has HIV or AIDS just by looking at them That there is no cure for HIV or AIDS SABÍA USTED? Que el VIH es un virus que debilita el sistema inmunológico de la persona infectada Que el VIH después se desarolla a SIDA Que a simple vista no se sabe si una persona está infectada con el VIH o el SIDA No hay cura ni para el VIH ni para el SIDA.
