Encourage children to use their knowledge of kinds of transportation to think about the book. Then ask: De qué maneras puede ir rápido la gente? Read As the children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem solving ability. Respond to the Text Personal Response Ask children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting. Point out that the ending punctuation in includes periods and exclamation points. Model how to read a sentence ending with an exclamation point. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Have children listen for words that rhyme. Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme, and keep their hands in their laps if the words do not rhyme. Say pairs of words, for example: bicicleta and camioneta, lancha and plancha, camión and corto, carrera and barrera, avión and camión, auto and avión, etc. Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables in words from the book: patineta, casco, motocicleta, lancha, avión, rápido, lado. Have them clap on each syllable: pa-ti-ne-ta, cas-co, mo-to-ci-cle-ta, lan-cha, a-vión, rá-pi-do, la-do. Finding Letters Have children recognize letters by name and locate them quickly in words. Use letters from the words in the fi rst two pages of the story, including: mira, la, el, bicicleta, va, rápido, patineta, niño, usa, casco, y, rodilleras, para. 3 Lesson 9:

Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 9.4 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension on Skill Text and Graphic Features Remind children that they can use information in the pictures to help them read the words in the book.
