These three Sacraments -- Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation are called the Sacraments of Initiation because the rest of our life as a Christian depends on them. They are the foundation of every Christian life. Together, let us pray for all those who are receiving these Sacraments and welcome them into our Cathedral Family. (www.olacathedral.org) CHAPEL DEDICATED TO BLESSED JOHN PAUL II On Sunday, May 1st, Pope John Paul II will be beatified at St. Peter s Basilica in Rome. To commemorate this milestone in his journey to Canonization, the May 1st 8:00 am Mass will be celebrated in his honor. In addition, there will be a special exhibit of items used by the Holy Father during his visit to Los Angeles in 1987. You will find the exhibit in Chapel 2 located in the South Ambulatory.

A SPECIAL COMMEMORATIVE OPPORTUNITY Throughout the month of May, we celebrate Mother s Day. Give a unique gift this May that will last all year All are invited to support the Cathedral s mission and to honor the special women in their lives. For a donation of $50, you can enroll your loved one in the Cathedral Mother s Day Prayer Program. You will receive a special Cathedral Prayer Folder to present to your loved one. The padded blue prayer folder is embossed with the Cathedral s name in gold lettering on the front cover, and inside contains a personalized certificate with your honoree s name. All names are placed in a special booklet where they will be prayed for daily from Mother s Day 2011 through Mother s Day 2012. For an additional $10, a Mass intention may be added. For information, please contact Lydia Henley at (213) 680-5219 or email, lhenley@olacathedral.org. Your gift not only honors a special person, but also helps the Cathedral to maintain financial stability, both short and long term. THE CATHEDRAL GIFT SHOP SUGGESTS: There is a beautiful long standing custom of honoring Mary in the month of May, our Catholic version of Mother's Day perhaps. Crowning Mary we symbolically honor her as Queen, Mother of the Son of God, our messianic King. She is the perfect follower who has won the "crown of righteousness" (II Tim 4:8), the "crown of life" (Jas 1:12; Rev 2:10), and the "crown of glory" (I Pet 5:4). This devotion, a fond memory for some, can be very tender and encouraging as through the nurturing and safe embrace of our mother in heaven we are led to the Divine Son, Jesus Christ. Make this tradition your own this year. A small May altar in your home may be as simple as a picture or statue. Bring some fresh cut flowers from the yard, sing a hymn or play a CD of Marian favorites. For more about Mary or if you want more ideas, stop by the Cathedral Gift Shop today. Levy Restaurants - Center at Cathedral Plaza Celebrate your Wedding with us! While your wedding band plays we ask your taste buds to dance! Our wedding packages are designed to provide a simple method to assemble the perfect menu for your special day. You may select from a variety of food and beverage options to create the perfect package that best suits your needs and palate. No dream is unanswered at the Center. (213) 680-5271 www.cathedralcatering.com CATHEDRAL ART UPDATE Please take time to enjoy some of the wonderful exhibits of art that can be found in the chapels located along the ambulatories. Art of the Easter Season - Student Exhibition The Cathedral is pleased to present a Juried Art Exhibit from high school students from Loyola and Immaculate Heart High Schools. The exhibit will run through May 31, 2011. The twenty award winning art pieces were inspired by the Easter Season. The exhibit is located in the North Ambulatory of the Cathedral. Works of Christopher Slatoff In the Cathedral Art Chapel (north ambulatory), you will find an exhibition of works by renowned sculptor Christopher Slatoff. The focus of the exhibit is the sculptor's meditation on the Church's role as patron of the arts and inspiration for the artist. The exhibit includes casts of several sculptures that he has done for local parishes, as well as work of a personal nature reflecting the spiritual and emotional life of the individual. Slatoff is also the creator of the Cathedral's newest sculpture, "Adoption," a life-sized bronze of St. Joseph and Jesus, also located in the north ambulatory. LAID TO REST IN OUR CATHEDRAL MAUSOLEUM In March 2011 Let us pray for the soul of Rose Galvez Wong. May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. DID YOU KNOW 2011 Working Together to Prevent Child Abuse brochure available now Each year, every parish in the Archdiocese receives copies of Working Together to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse: Keeping Ministerial Relationships Healthy and Holy. Published in English and Spanish, the brochure is a helpful guide to the sexual abuse prevention policies, programs and resources that have been developed by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Please look for the brochure in the Conference Center Lobby. Please read it and keep it some place for easy reference. For free copies of the Working Together Brochure in English and Spanish please email Tim Olshefski at tolshefski@la-archdiocese.org Walking about the Cathedral Complex, you will notice that the purple banners of Lent have been replaced with white banners symbolizing the Resurrection. Our Liturgical Environment is carefully created to enhance the worship experience. In a place the size of the Cathedral, this requires a great deal of effort. Let us pause for a moment to give thanks to the Cathedral Facilities Team who tirelessly hung the close to 50 banners and to Virginia Mendez who sewed each one of them. May God bless you!
