1 Whitman Elementary Volume 7 Whitman March 2011 Newsletter Letter from the Principal Dear Whitman Families, The month of February is quickly coming to a close and the chance of snow is still upon us. How is that possible? I guess that is the unpredictable part about living in Portland. We never really know what the weather will be rain, snow or, if we are lucky, sun. I am eagerly waiting more sun time. Our month of February was quite busy. We held our Kindergarten Round-up on the 16 th of this month. We had quite a few current families in attendance as well as new families. Parents received information about our school community, current programs, and expectations for learning in Kindergarten before registering for next year. The Round-Up was a success thanks to the Kindergarten teachers: Ms. Ness, Mrs. Williams and Ms. Sele, Mrs. Archer, our librarian, Mrs. Taylor, our PE teacher, Hallie, our school secretary, Stephanie Horton, a current kindergarten parent and the Kelly Welcome Center Staff. If you were unable to attend the Round-Up, and have a child ready to start Kindergarten in the fall, please give us a call. You can still register at anytime and we can answer any questions you have about our program. In honor of Black History Month, we had a Black History Celebration the evening of the 22nd. We had three wonderful emcees: Amara, Aylin and Davine who introduced the performers: Whitman s Jump Rope Club, Liska Bates, one of our fabulous Educational Assistants, the Jefferson Dancers, Alexis Jackson, a singer and Charles McGee, who concluded our evening with his story. It was great to see so many students and families. We had tryouts for our annual Student Talent Show which will be held the afternoon of March 11 th. Students are eagerly practicing their acts so I hope you will join us if you can. If you are a family looking to transfer from one school to another, attend a focus option school or request to remain at Whitman if you have moved out of the PPS boundary lines you will need to complete a transfer request form through our Enrollment and Transfer Center by Friday, March 11 th. If you have any questions about this process feel free to call Whitman s office at (503) Sincerely, Lori Clark Inside this issue: Principal s Letter in Spanish 2 Wish List 2 SUN Updates PE News 3 3 Principal s Letter in Russian 4 Spirit Week Schedule Counselor s Corner 4 5 Calendar 6 Join the PTA Forms are in the office Next PTA meeting is March 1, 6:30 PM Translation, childcare & refreshments provided Special points of interest: We are still collecting Box Tops. Ness, Sra. Williams y Sta. Sele. Lori Clark. Wish List We are in desperate need of children s sweat pants. Mostly sizes 5/6 and 7/8. We could also use some 9/10 and 11/12 s. Generic sweat pants are best, but we will take any small size pants. If anyone has gently used pants their child/ren have outgrown, we will be more than happy to take them off your hands. Page 2

4 Letter from the Principal - Russian 5 COUNSELORS CORNER In February, eight parents, caregivers and grandparents attended our monthly Building Safe, Respectful, Responsible Children event to learn about and discuss children s development of language. We had a lively conversation about a variety of related topics. We talked about how children can easily learn two languages when they are young, and how growing up knowing two languages actually supports strong language development. There was a question about ELL (English Language Learners) in special education how schools can determine if a child is having trouble with a learning disability or just struggling to learn English. (Any ESL student who is struggling academically is carefully assessed in their native language and in English before a referral for a Special Education evaluation. Most children who have attended school in the U.S. have stronger English skills in reading and writing than they do in their native language, even as young as Kindergarten.) Parents and caregivers were also interested to learn how early exposure to language is critically important, and that this only holds true for human interaction not recorded voices on television or videos or CDs. The human connection eye contact, talking turns talking and listening, facial expressions, and touch, all are part of the critical exposure to language that babies and young children need for optimal development of language skills as well as strong attachment and social skills. Tips to support your child s language development: Talk a lot, listen to your child, and encourage taking turns talking and listening. Use language that may be slightly more complex than your child uses. Answer questions with full explanations, to the extent appropriate and possible. Ask questions of your own to facilitate discussion and conversation. Read and share books every day. Expose your child to a second language. Seek out resources for language exposure. Page 5
