PLAY THE GAME. SPEAK THE LANGUAGE KLOO Lesson Plans Objectives 1. Building vocabulary 2. Creating sentences 3. Having fun
Introducing KLOO into the classroom Children love to learn through play. When playing KLOO they learn fast and have lots of fun. By incorporating KLOO games into your lessons you will tap into your children s instinctive desire to perform well in games as well as their natural ability to learn a language. Many children excel with KLOO, quickly building up a vocabulary of hundreds of everyday words coupled with an ability to use them to create sentences. KLOO is in fact a card system allowing you to play 16 different games. Some are quick-fire, loud and fun. Others are more sophisticated and thought provoking. Just by playing, many important aspects of Key Stages 2 and 3 are covered. KLOO complements other language work and allows children to use their knowledge in a fun and dynamic way. KLOO can also work outside the classroom with children playing games for fun at home with parents or at school with friends. If you haven t already... We recommend that you download the free Handy Guide to KLOO which is available at It gives you tips on how to play KLOO, what lessons different games teach and the rules for every game. The Handy Guide compliments these Lesson Plans. DOWNLOAD
KLOO Lesson Plan Learning Objectives: Make language fun; build vocabulary; create sentences, use of definite and indefinite articles, adjectives, verb conjugation, gender agreement, descriptions and expressing preferences. Proof of Learning: Children are tested before and after KLOO games are played, providing strong proof of learning. Incentives: Children play games to score points. It is competitive and fun. Teacher provides recognition for overall winners and most improved players. Each week different players can come to the fore. Resources: Decks of KLOO cards (a single deck can occupy 4 children) 2 x trophies (optional) Handy Guide to KLOO Games (download free from website)
LESSON 1 DECK 1 30 Minutes Activity 1: Proof of Learning: Conduct a vocabulary test using Hand Out 1 to secure the benchmark for proof of learning. Teacher assimilates results. Activity 2: Motivation. Teacher announces a KLOO language tournament. Explain that there are trophies / awards / recognition for best player and most improved player. Activity 3: Demonstration: Show KLOO Cards and explain the colour code system for creating sentences (See Appendix 1). Then explain how to play Original KLOO (See Appendix 2 / Watch How to play KLOO Video). Activity 4: Play Original KLOO. Teacher groups children into groups of 4. Children play Original KLOO learning new words and building sentences for points as they play. Winners receive 5 points, Runners-up 4 points, 3 rd place 3 points and 4 th place 2 points. Collate points. Activity 5: Vocabulary Issue the vocabulary sheet (Hand Out 1) and announce that there will be another game at next lesson when a league table will be issued. Children will often be incentivised to learn the vocabulary to score more in the next round. LESSON 2 DECK 1 30 Minutes Activity 1: Read out standings in League Table Activity 2: Motivation. Announce too that there will be rewards for most improved players in vocabulary tests. Activity 3: Play Original KLOO. Teacher groups children into groups of 4. Stream groups so winners play winners, runners up play runners up etc. Activity 4: Score Games. Winners receive 5 points, Runner Up 4 points, 3 rd place 3 points and 4 th place 2 points. Activity 5: Incentives. Announce trophy / recognition award will be awarded at next lesson. Activity 6: Proof of Learning. Test pupils on vocabulary of Deck 1 again. Collate points to establish most improved students. Announce to class you will be moving onto Deck 2 for the next lesson.
LESSON 3 DECK 2 30 Minutes Activity 1: Announce League table: Announce winners of Deck 1 league. Overall winner is person with most points. If there is a tie break then the person with best improvement in vocabulary test wins. Announce most improved player player who learned most words between 2 tests. In case of a tie break the most improved player is the person with most points scored in games. Set a new League for Deck 2. (You can also continue with an overall League) Activity 2: Proof of Learning: Conduct a vocabulary test using words in Appendix 3 to obtain the benchmark for proof of learning. Teacher assimilates results. Activity 3: Demonstration: Consider introducing and explaining new KLOO game such as Gist. Activity 4: Play Game. Teacher groups children into groups of 4 in rough ability levels. Children play KLOO learning new words and building sentences for points as they play. Activity 5: Score Games. Winners receive 5 points, Runner Up 4 points, 3 rd place 3 points and 4 th place 2 points. Activity 6: Gather points. Issue the vocabulary sheet (Appendix 4) and announce that there will be another game at next lesson and league table will be issued. League table can be a continuation of the League from rounds 1 and 2 or whole new league based on Deck 2. This is our recommendation. (Or indeed you can run both deck league winners and overall winners). Children will often be incentivised to learn the vocabulary to score more in the next round. LESSON 4 DECK 2 30 Minutes Activity 1: Read out standings in League Table Activity 2: Play KLOO. Teacher groups children into groups of 4. Stream groups so winners play winners, runners up play runners up etc. Activity 3: Score Games. Winners receive 5 points, Runner Up 4 points, 3 rd place 3 points and 4 th place 2 points. Activity 5: Gather points. Announce trophy / recognition award will be awarded at next lesson. Activity 5: Proof of Learning. Test pupils on vocabulary of deck 1 again. Establish most improved students. Announce to class you will be moving onto the next deck for the next lesson.
LESSON 5 DECK 3 30 Minutes Repeat as lesson 3 LESSON 6 DECK 3 30 Minutes Repeat as lesson 4 LESSON 7 DECK 4 30 Minutes Repeat as lesson 3 LESSON8 DECK 4 30 Minutes Repeat as lesson 4 At the end of lesson 8 you can recognise again all the winners of various decks and the overall champion across all games.

Making a sentence with the colour code system Teaching children to make a sentence is really easy with KLOO. Usually children will learn this system within a minute. You can print this page as a reminder of the colour sequence. Basically sentences can be as long as you like as long as you have a red word. A blue card must follow a green card (or you cannot play the green card) Yellow cards follow blue cards Purple cards can go at the front
