4 Teaching notes Topic: food and drink Linguistic aims: listening for gist and detail; talking about typical food and its ingredients. Initial activity Launch the interactive Magnet task to get students thinking about possible lesson aims, by going to and entering the resource number in the quick search box. By not giving them an instruction with the activity they have to work out what to do independently as well as complete the task by sorting dishes into savoury and sweet. Before listening Task 1 Students work with a partner to decide if the statements are true or false, correcting any false statements. This prepares them for some of the vocabulary and content they will hear. Task 2 In pairs/small groups, students talk about their favourite dishes. Tell them to list the basic ingredients of their favourite dish on a piece of paper. They then read out their ingredients to the rest of the group, who have to guess the dish being described. As a follow-up and to prepare for listening, ask students about famous dishes from the Spanish speaking world. Whilst listening Task 3 Students listen for the first time and try to identify the dishes mentioned. Task 4 Students listen for the details and circle the correct answer. After listening Task 5 Students work in pairs/small groups to write a similar text to the one they have heard, this time about the typical dishes in their own country. In each text, they should include four things that are false. Groups then exchange texts and identify the false information. This can be done competitively: stick the texts to the wall; each group has to run to the wall (one member at a time) and retrieve information for the group until they find the four false items. Task 6 Students label the pictures of the dishes from what they have learned in the lesson. Answers Task 1: a-f, b-v, c-f, d-f, e-v, f-v, g-v. 5 Transcript En España tenemos muchos platos típicos, porque España es muy grande. A mí, el que más me gusta es la paella. Se hace con arroz, con pescado, carne y verduras. También me gusta mucho el gazpacho, que es típico del sur, y que se hace con tomates, pepino, pimientos verdes, cebolla y es un plato que se bebe, más bien, no?, y se toma en verano muy frío. También se come mucha carne y pescado a la parrilla, con el fuego. Y también tenemos muchos postres distintos, como el arroz con leche, las cuajadas, flanes de huevo o de vainilla, y también tenemos natillas Page 5 of 5
