There will also be an emphasis on educational tourism as income generation for local families, environmental care and health among women, children and youth. Qualifications: All MCC workers are expected to exhibit a commitment to: a personal Christian faith and discipleship; active church membership; and nonviolent peacemaking. 1. B.A. degree in education or social work, or interest in these fields. 2. Strong English language skills. 3. Ability to communicate in Spanish, or willingness to learn. 4. Assignment Narrative: This position is seconded to ANADESA, a community-based organization in Santiago Atitlan. The main goals with this position are to promote education for peace in children and youth from Panabaj and Tzanchaj Villages of Santiago Atitlan; organize educational, recreational and environmental activities with children and youth; improve learning and understanding skills for children and youth; strengthen community educational spaces for adults, giving special access to women. This position will give support to educational and recreational activities to contribute to the overall development and capacity building of the communities of Panabaj, Tzanchaj and Chekmuc as a way to promote human development. There will also be an emphasis on educational tourism as income

2 generation for local families, environmental care and health among women, children and youth. This worker will report directly to the director of ANADESA. Duties: Support educational activities of ANADESA with children, youth and young adults. Promote activities in reading and writing in Spanish for adults. Promote activities of integration among women, youth, and children of the community. Support ANADESA staff to connect with visitors and to translate from English to Spanish in its educational tourism project and with MCC WAL teams. Support ANADESA in accessing s, writing reports and stories of the projects there and to translate those to English. Teach ANADESA staff basic words in English, oriented to facilitate their connections with visitors and crafts buyers. Collaborate with other local NGOs in coordination with the director of ANADESA. Support MCC representatives in the process of looking for good IVEP participants and support these individuals in the process of strengthening their level of English. Participate regularly in a local church. Participate in all activities planned as team building and renewal from MCC, 4 times a year. Submit progress reports and PMRs on time. Location Description: Guatemala represents a variety of Latin America cultures as well as a sad and violent history of conflict between a small wealthy class and the majority impoverished population. Thirty-six years of civil war ( ) have left the country divided politically and ideologically, the social weaving was mostly destroyed. Education does not have a priority especially in native communities. The process of teaching and understanding among indigenous populations requires patience, but at the same time is a good way to overcome deep vulnerabilities in the communities. The worker will be living in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala, which is a small but very populated town (35,000 inhabitants) located 150 kilometers west of Guatemala City, surrounded by one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, Lake Atitlan. Most of the people are indigenous. They speak Tzutujil as the mother language, and Spanish is the second but official language of the country. Challenges: In Santiago Atitlan Spanish is a second language for most people, and many people do not speak Spanish or speak very little. This can be a challenge living with a host family where not all members of a family speak Spanish. The work culture within the organization is to speak Tzutujil as well, but the team members are sensitive to conduct more work discussions in Spanish, but this is an ongoing challenge. Santiago Atitlan has a hospital and other small health centers where the worker could receive assistance in health issues and some emergency treatment. For specialized health needs, the worker would need to come to Guatemala City, which is located three hours from Santiago Atitlan by bus. Medicine and access to good quality medical care is available in the city.

3 It is important to be aware of the nature of living in a country like Guatemala. While the armed conflict ended twenty years ago, these are countries where violence and petty crime are a fact of life, and while this does not overly affect things on a daily basis, the worker should be conscious of this fact. Living amid a context of social violence is a challenge for all the MCC workers in Guatemala. Working among some communities in Guatemala sometimes generates frustration and confusion because of poverty, lifestyles and ways of learning which are different from ours. It is expected that the worker has patience and utilizes skills of listening while s/he is able to gain the confidence and trust of the local community. Using the public transportation services can be risky due to insecurity in Guatemala. Social violence and delinquency also seem to be high risks, especially in certain parts of the city, but they can be avoided by following the instructions provided by the embassies, MCC representatives, friends and local organizations. The potential exists for over-work and the creation of co-dependency, since we work with communities where scarcities abound. There is a potential for a non-native person to have a lot of power in making decisions, and this needs to be held sensitively in this context. For those who are very task oriented, it can be a challenge to recognize the importance of "being" instead of always "doing" as building healthy relationships and mutually transformative learning is an important part of the participant experience. We hope participants will come with a desire to walk alongside our local partners, rather than see the assignment solely as a way to "get things done". Managing frustration when things don t turn out as expected can be hard. While we do our best to determine and outline job responsibilities with our local partners, assignments really come alive based on the passions, skills, and giftings of an individual. Responsibilities may change or be refined over time in communication with supervisors to meet the ongoing changes and needs within a local context. As such, the greatest characteristics a participant can bring to an assignment are adaptability, flexibility, patience, a willingness to get your hands dirty, and humility to complete even mundane tasks. Demostrar interés en trabajar en el desarrollo de las comunidades marginadas. 5. Capacidad para trabajar con la gente de América Latina, respetando su cultura. 6. Capacidad para manejar la frustración y el estrés. 7. Capacidad para trabajar en equipo y aprender de los demás. 8. Capacidad de ser creativo y tomar la iniciativa en los tiempos lentos de trabajo. 9. La voluntad de vivir con sencillez en las comunidades rurales. 10. Poseer habilidades interpersonales y de comunicación. Narración de la Asignación: La persona en esta posición dará apoyo a las actividades educativas y recreativas para contribuir al desarrollo y fortalecimiento de la capacidad general de las comunidades de Panabaj, Tzanchaj y Chekmuc como una forma de promover el desarrollo humano. También habrá un énfasis en el turismo educativo para generar ingresos para las familias locales, el cuidado del medio ambiente y el cuidado de la salud para mujeres, niños, niñas y jóvenes. Este/a trabajador/a se reportará directamente al director de Anadesa. Deberes: Contribuir a las actividades educativas de Anadesa con niños, niñas y jóvenes. Promover las actividades de lectura y escritura en español para personas adultas. Promover las actividades de integración entre mujeres, jóvenes, niñas, y niños de la comunidad. Apoyar al personal de ANADESA a hacer conexiones con los visitantes y traducir del inglés al español en su proyecto de turismo educativo, y con los equipos de Trabajo y Aprendizaje (WAL) del CCM. Apoyar a ANADESA en el acceso de correo electrónico ( s), escribir informes y relatos de los proyectos y traducirlos al inglés. Enseñar al personal de ANADESA palabras básicas en inglés para facilitar sus relaciones con los visitantes y compradores/compradoras de artesanías. Descripción de Ubicación: Guatemala representa una gran variedad de culturas de América Latina, así como una triste y violenta historia de conflicto entre una pequeña clase rica y la mayoría de la población empobrecida. Treinta y seis años de guerra civil ( ) han dejado al país dividido política e ideológicamente. La educación no tiene una prioridad especial en las comunidades rurales. El proceso requiere paciencia, pero al mismo tiempo es una buena manera de superar las vulnerabilidades profundas en las comunidades. La persona en esta posición vivirá en Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala, que es pequeño pero muy poblado ( habitantes), situado a 150 kilómetros al oeste de Ciudad de Guatemala, rodeado de uno de los

5 lagos más bellos del mundo, el Lago de Atitlán. La mayoría de las personas son indígenas. Hablan Tzutujil principalmente, pero el español es el segundo idioma y el idioma oficial del país. Desafíos: En Santiago Atitlán, el español es el segundo idioma para la mayoría de la gente, y mucha gente no lo habla o lo habla muy poco. Puede ser un desafío vivir con una familia en la que no todos los miembros hablan español. La cultura de trabajo dentro de la organización es hablar Tzutujil también, pero los miembros del equipo son sensibles a realizar más discusiones de trabajo en español, pero esto es un desafío siempre. Santiago Atitlán tiene un hospital y otros centros de salud donde la persona puede recibir asistencia en aspectos de salud y algún tratamiento de emergencia. Para las necesidades de salud especializadas, la persona tendría que venir a la Ciudad de Guatemala, ubicado a tres horas de Santiago Atitlán por autobús. Medicina y el acceso a la atención médica de buena calidad está disponible en la ciudad. Ser consciente de la naturaleza de la vida en un país como Guatemala o El Salvador. Si bien el conflicto armado terminó hace veinte años, se trata de países donde la violencia y los delitos menores son el pan de cada día, y si bien esto no afecta demasiado las cosas día a día, el trabajador/a. debe ser consciente de esto. Vivir en medio de un contexto de violencia social es un reto para todas y todos los trabajadores del CCM en El Salvador y Guatemala. Trabajar entre algunas comunidades a veces genera frustración y confusión debido a la pobreza, los estilos de vida y formas de aprendizaje, que son diferentes de las nuestras. Se espera que el trabajador/a tenga paciencia y utilice sus habilidades de escucha mientras gana la confianza de la comunidad local. Utilizar los servicios de transporte público puede ser riesgoso debido a la inseguridad Guatemala. La violencia social y la delincuencia también parecen ser altos riesgos, especialmente en partes de la ciudad, pero se pueden evitar siguiendo las instrucciones proporcionadas por las embajadas, representantes del CCM, amigos, amigas y organizaciones locales. Existe la posibilidad de exceso de trabajo y la creación de co-dependencia, ya que trabajamos con comunidades en donde la escasez abunda. Hay una posibilidad de que una persona no nativa tenga mucho poder en la toma de decisiones, es necesario ser consciente de esto con sensibilidad en este contexto.
