This Guide to Services was developed to provide internal and external stakeholders with up-to-date information on services available to students. The guide is divided into four sections: academic services, student services, general resources, and LSC-Atascocita Center. Each section will highlight a specific area/program followed by contact information. Please keep this guide handy as it will help you navigate the many resources available to students. This information is also available on LSC-Kingwood s homepage, and will be updated periodically. 2

3 Academic Services Academic Support Center (The Learning Center) The Academic Support Center (ASC) is located on the 2nd floor of the Performing Arts Center (PAC) and offers a range of support services for all LSC-Kingwood students and faculty. Tutoring is offered by appointment, walk-in and as open lab. Tutoring is available in the ASC and around campus in approximately twenty subjects as well as for English and math placement testing. Conversation Groups are offered weekly to learners who want to practice their English speaking skills. Contact Carly Jones, tutor coordinator, at or Carly.M.Jones@lonestar.edu. More information is available at Peer Based Support Services includes the Supplemental Instruction (SI) Program and Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL). SI is an internationally recognized approach designed to reduce attrition and improve academic performance by employing students who have successfully completed the course as SI leaders. SI leaders work in close partnership with the instructor and hold SI sessions outside of class that form a foundation for student success. PLTL takes place in the classroom and uses peer leaders who facilitate small group work under the supervision of the instructor. The Computer Lab supports most software being taught at LSC-Kingwood and is open to students and instructors. Lab assistants are available to assist with technical difficulties. The Success Training and Referral (STAR) Program (formerly known as Early Alert) helps students with mastering skills (i.e. time management, study strategies, test taking tips) that will provide them with long-term academic success. Students may schedule 30-minute appointments by calling or instructors may refer students to the program via mylonestar. Success Seminars are free, interactive sessions held during the lunch hour on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Each seminar covers a different topic or success skill including Crash Course for College Students; English: Subjective Verb Agreement; Test Anxiety; and Preparing for Math Finals. Seminars are a great extra credit option for any course and will support students in achieving academic success. Contact the ASC at for more information. 4 Counseling Services Counselors are available to meet with students by appointment. However, some concerns may be addressed on a walk-in basis. Counselors are at least master s level professionals who are trained to provide personal, academic, and career counseling services. Honors classes provide a unique intellectual and co-curricular experience. Honors College students may earn honors academic course credit by enrolling in honors sections, as well as by working with a faculty mentor on honors contracts. Eligibility: Open to new or returning students with at least one of the following: A high school GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or higher on the SAT (combined math and critical reading sections). 26 or higher composite score on the ACT GPA with 9 or more college credit hours. 5 LSC-Kingwood and LSC-Atascocita Center Libraries The LSC-Kingwood and LSC-Atascocita Center libraries are open to everyone in the community. In the library, patrons can access the Internet, create documents and presentations, and locate e-books, educational videos, and articles from thousands of newspapers, magazines and research journals. Search the Lone Star College System (LSCS) Libraries Library Catalog to find books, DVDs and other items that are available from any LSCS library and Harris County/Montgomery County public libraries. Items may be requested for pickup and returned at any LSCS, Harris County or Montgomery County library. A LSCS or Harris County/Montgomery County public library card is required to check out library materials. Locate e-books, articles, streaming video, music and more from LSCS Libraries Research Databases. Use the 14-digit barcode number on the back of your LSCS ID for off-campus access 24 hours a day, seven days a week. LSCS credit students, faculty and staff may check out books directly from area libraries with a TexShare card or request books and articles from libraries worldwide through interlibrary loan. The Testing Center staff specializes in proctoring tests for students who need to test in a quiet, monitored environment. The Testing Center primarily offers placement testing and academic testing (for online classes), but there are many other types of testing services offered. 6 6 Admissions Lone Star College System is an open-enrollment institution. This means most students are accepted once their application has been submitted. The admissions office is located in the SCC. Students will be assisted with the following: Assistance with the LSC-Kingwood application Evaluation of transcripts Review of student records In addition to the admissions process, the office is responsible for outreach efforts. Academic advisors work with students by setting high expectations, establishing goals, helping students understand their options and encouraging them to stay motivated to persist. Academic advisors are available everyday either by appointment or on a walk-in basis. 7 Center for Civic Engagement The Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) encourages students, faculty, and staff to become active citizens involved in their communities by providing opportunities and resources to engage in service oriented community activities. The center s values are participation, advocacy, social justice and sustainability. CCE s goal is to produce citizens who take active roles through dialogue with politicians in addressing complex problems that are facing their community and the country. The Center works to infuse civic ideas into curricular and co-curricular programs by initiating and supporting programs such as Public Achievement, Deliberative Dialogues, Bridging Cultures, the Alternative Spring Break, Engage The Elections, Internships, and the Model United Nations. Clubs and Organizations Registered Student Organizations create and support opportunities for students with common interests to come together for a variety of shared experiences. They also provide a framework for students to develop their own special talents and interests and typically are classified as social, ethnic, political, occupational, athletic, academic, religious, or cultural. To form a club, a student must identify a faculty or staff member to advise the group, charter a constitution, and find other interested students who are committed to the mission (in no particular order). There are currently 45 registered student organizations. Information about current organizations and guidelines for starting a new organization may be obtained from the Office of Student Life. Coyote Camp (New Student Orientation) As part of the Admissions process, all incoming students are required to attend Coyote Camp. During this new student orientation, the students are introduced to the campus and its resources. Many aspects of Coyote Camp are identical to the orientations at the other five campuses, so that all new students have the same basic information. Before attending Coyote Camp, students must apply for admission, complete placement testing (if applicable) and satisfy the Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination requirement. All students receive a tour of campus and important information about support services that are available throughout the institution. 8 Disabilities ADA LSC-Kingwood is committed to ensuring that equal access to its educational programs, activities, and facilities occurs for students with disabilities. Disability Services assists current and future students by determining and recommending appropriate academic support services. Disability Services focuses on helping students with disabilities make a successful transition to college and acts as a referral source for services both on campus and within the community. All students with disabilities are encouraged to register with Disability Services on the campus they will be attending and provide appropriate documentation of their disability. Students should register as early as possible to help ensure that all accommodations are in place by the beginning of the semester. Students will receive letters documenting the accommodations determined necessary for each course and must submit a letter of accommodation to each instructor. Provision of the accommodations will begin at the time the student presents the letter of accommodation to the instructor, and are not retroactive to any instruction or evaluation prior to the instructor s receipt of the letter. Disciplinary Issues All matters dealing with policy and procedure related to handling inappropriate student behavior (see online Code of Conduct Reference Manual) should be directed to the Dean of Student Development. Financial Aid Financial Aid is the process of students completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine what state, federal, and institutional aid they are eligible to receive. Students must complete the FAFSA and supply all information as requested to complete their file. In order to qualify for federal aid, students must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress for Financial Aid (which varies greatly from Academic Progress). Functions that fall under Financial Aid include but are not limited to: federal grants, federal loans, state grants, scholarships, work-study, and various other state, federal, and institutional financial aid programs. Freshman Coordinator Carolina Redmond is the Freshman Coordinator at Lone Star College-Kingwood. As Freshman Coordinator, Redmond assists with new student orientation as a way to introduce herself to all incoming students. Redmond proactively reaches out to freshman through phone calls and s, informing new students about pertinent campus information, important deadlines and upcoming events. She authors The Howler, a monthly freshman newsletter delivered to students mylonestar accounts. She also coordinates the Freshman Fusion Series. These sessions explore important topics relating to the success of students in their first year of college. Sessions include Freshman First Experience; Time Management; Study Smarter, Not Harder: Study Strategies; Transferring to a University; Financial Responsibility; and Rock your Résume. 9 Intercultural Center The Intercultural Center seeks to foster intercultural awareness, inclusiveness and respect for all in the LSC-Kingwood community. We are committed to the enhancement of a positive LSC-Kingwood experience for students, staff, and faculty. The center hosts programs and events that address awareness, inclusion, and equity around multicultural and global issues. We strive to develop and prepare future leaders to be culturally competent in a diverse and multicultural society. The Intercultural Center is located in SCC 234. International Students Lone Star College System hosts at its six campuses more than 2500 students from 108 countries. International students studying in the United States are expected to be full-time students and be in good standing with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). To attend one of the colleges, a student must have an F-1 visa. Once accepted for admission into a college, an advisor will send the student a welcome packet containing a SEVIS I-20 form, which is used to obtain an F-1 student visa at a local U.S. embassy or consulate. Prior to interviewing for the student visa, the student will be required to pay the SEVIS fee via mail using the I-901 form, Western Union, or by logging on to Students must present their receipt to the U.S. embassy or consulate before being permitted to interview. The admitting/testing/advising and enrolling process of ESOL students and F-1 visa students is as follows: 1. All ESOL and F-1 students should start in Admissions (unless it is obvious that the student needs/wants the free English as a Second Language program). 2. An admissions representative will help students complete the online application. 3. An advisor will provide students with the testing form. 4. Students will go to the Testing Center for assessment. 5. Students will return to Admissions after testing for referral (or to meet with an advisor or someone in Continuing Education). 10 Letters of Reference Students who need a letter of reference from a faculty member must complete the Reference Letter Request form found on page 34. This form is available for download (doc and pdf) under the Tips from a Professional tab at (direct link to page: lonestar.edu/content.php?pid=534582&sid= ). To provide a clear description of your request, complete the form and attach a résume before speaking with the person from whom you are requesting the letter of reference. There are two coffee shops, one directly in front of the cafeteria, and the other on the second floor of the library (LIB). Minuti Coffee is operated by the Molinari/ Minuti Company which has been in business since The Molinari brand is in more than 25 countries. 11 KidCare Center Through a partnership with the Lake Houston Family YMCA, the KidCare program provides exemplary services to the children of students who attend classes at LSC-Kingwood. College students who are enrolled in at least six hours of on-campus coursework can register their children into the daytime child care services while they are in class. KidCare can accommodate up to 35 children at one time and they are registered on a first-come basis. While in the program, children will be taught curriculum-based objectives depending on their age level. The cost to enroll children is $50 per week which includes activities and snacks. KidCare hours are 7 am 4 pm Monday through Friday. Registration forms are available at the SCC Admissions front desk. Outreach and Recruitment The mission of the Lone Star College-Kingwood s Outreach and Recruitment division is to empower prospective traditional and non-traditional students within our service area to accomplish their goals by providing guidance and education about the programs and services that LSC-Kingwood has to offer. By creating close partnerships with ISDs and community organizations, we strive to create opportunities in which we can engage individuals in conversations about their future and provide information that will be vital in their transition to college and into the workforce. Payment of tuition and fees Payment of tuition and fees as well as other financial transactions can be made at the Cashier s Office, in the Student Services area on the first floor of the SCC Building. Recreational Sports LSC-Kingwood s club sports and intramurals provide opportunities to participate in quality recreational sports programs as well as advanced participation experiences against other collegiate teams as a means to enhance life experiences and develop a greater sense of community within the college. Sport clubs activities include baseball, men s basketball, men s soccer, co-ed tennis, and women s volleyball. Intramural activities include tennis matches; basketball and soccer tournaments; golf scrambles; and Sports and Beach Days. Sport Club participants are not charged to participate, however students must be currently enrolled in nine credit hours, maintain a 2.0 overall GPA, attend a LSC-Kingwood athlete in-service yearly, and perform a community service project each semester. 12 Scholarships Scholarships are a type of financial aid that does not need to be repaid. Scholarships are awarded on various criteria usually reflecting the values and purposes of the donor of the award. Scholarships can be based on merit, need, demographics, or career focus. Veterans Information The Lone Star College Veterans Affairs Center s mission is to provide veterans and their family members with assistance in achieving their educational goals, making career transition, and aid with other personal issues which resulted from their service to our country. Veterans who need information can contact the LSC Veterans Affairs Center at GIBILL@lonestar.edu or call Veterans Military Education Benefits All GI Bill and Department of Defense (DoD) entitlements are processed through the Lone Star College System Veterans Affairs Center located at LSCS-University Park. For questions pertaining to education entitlements, please contact the LSC-Kingwood liaison/ advisor. All documentation for GI Bill, Hazlewood Exemption, and Tuition Assistance can be submitted to an advisor in SCC. All documentation must be presented before the certification process can begin. Veterans will be assisted through the standard admissions process (see admissions process above). Women s Center The Women s Center strives to empower women, increase communication, and create a network of support for all. It is a place where women can find assistance to overcome life s obstacles to achieve their personal, academic and career goals. 13 GENERAL RESOURCES Book Stores at LSC-Kingwood and LSC-Atascocita Center The LSC-Kingwood and the LSC-Atascocita book stores are convenient locations for students to purchase their textbooks and study aids. Located in the SCC and the LSC-Atascocita Center respectively, the bookstores offer online ordering as well. Students can find the necessary textbooks for classes by using the class search tool on the LSC-Kingwood website or by logging in to mylonestar. After entering the search criteria, click the textbook information link for the class. Textbook requirements are also available through the faculty members syllabi and can be found using the syllabi search tool. Students are not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from any Lone Star College System affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer. The bookstore accepts cash, checks and all major credit cards. Staff members are committed to maintaining a clean and sustainable environment that is conducive to learning. Grounds are meticulously maintained, and buildings and classrooms are kept clean. Maintenance and HVAC personnel work in tandem to ensure buildings are fully operational. Sustainability efforts are followed to make sure items such as paper, cardboard, plastics and aluminum are recycled. Audio and visual equipment is also provided to faculty and staff by the special events team as well as tracking room availability. Made up entirely of LSC-Kingwood faculty (both full-time and adjuncts), the organization meets on the first Tuesday of every month from 12:30 pm to 1:30pm, and is dedicated to fostering effective communication among faculty and between faculty and administration while at the same time promoting unity and coherence. Faculty Senate therefore addresses a variety of issues that impact the quality of education. Ms. Sherry Young is LSC-Kingwood s Faculty Senate President. The Faculty Senate President is also a member of the President s Council, which meets twice a month. Additionally, Faculty Senate Presidents from the system s six colleges meet with the LSC System Chancellor and Vice-Chancellors on a monthly basis, attend all regular meetings of the Board of Trustees, and have a standing place on the agenda to make reports and announcements. 15 PSSA The Professional and Support Staff Association (PSSA) is made up of all part time and full time staff (non-faculty) at LSC-Kingwood. It provides members an opportunity to exchange ideas on matters of mutual concern. The group also provides a forum for the exchange of information relating to issues, trends, development of staff, and a channel for vocalizing staff concerns to administration. Along with providing educational programs to increase and improve the skills of all staff members, the group also coordinates an array of fund raisers benefitting local charitable organizations. The campus has police coverage 24 hours per day, seven days per week, 365 days per year. The Police Office is located on the first floor of the SCC.
