Among the star hoofers is Chris Hernandez, Kansas City, Missouri s deputy director of communications and a former television journalist. The students who participate in the school s Corporate Work Study internship program earn money, but they also earn academic and real-world work benefits. It s been a huge piece of these students educations, Summers said. They know that their performance affects whether the position will be available to other students the following year. This year, Cristo Rey s leadership hopes to raise nearly $800,000 at the competition, said board member Mary Lou Jaramillo, one of the school s board members. Some of that comes in the form of in-kind services, Summers said. It goes a long way, Jaramillo said. The money raised since the event s inception has enabled the school to enhance opportunities for its students. Before the event it was kids just go to school, go to work, she said. Some kids are getting scholarships that will take them outside of the greater Kansas City area, and those kids will be prepared for that, regardless of where they go to school. I just want to be sure that people understand that the students can live in Kansas City, Kan., or they can live in Kansas City, Mo. It s the economic need that is the eligibility they need to be at Cristo Rey. Last year s event raised $570,000 after expenses, Summers said. During his ten months in office, Wyandotte County saw the opening of the Cerner s Campus and new luxury apartments in Village West. General Motors has continued to invest in their Kansas City, Kansas plant and a new manufacturing business park is under construction in Fairfax. Five new grocery stores have been built in the community and a sixth one will be built in downtown Kansas City, Kansas around 10th and State Avenue. Holland unveiled his vision for the location during his state of the government address. He plans to create a healthy lifestyle for the residents that live in the area. He said that the city has two anchors for the site - a new grocery store and a new YMCA. The YMCA is currently in a 100-year-old building on 8th street and they would like to relocate and expand their facility. Helping to drive the healthy campus vision forward is a commitment by the Unified Government to pledge $6 million towards the building of a new community center. It is our commitment to downtown. The center will be an asset for our community, said Holland, and I would like to see a tournament pool built in the YMCA for our high schools, both public and private, to use for swim teams practices and tournaments. Holland wants all children in the city to have the opportunity to learn how to swim. The downtown campus would be a $30 million investment. We need to focus on rebuilding our downtown and the campus would be a great step forward, he said. As a former commissioner, Holland served on the Healthy Communities Wyandotte taskforce. As mayor he continues to stress the importance of health and health care for all residents. He spoke out about access to Health Care and made a strong pitch for the expansion of Medicaid in Kansas. These dollars are no different from other federal dollars that Kansas readily accepts on an annual basis for transportation, agriculture and education. Refusing this money hurts the poor and it hurts the health care infrastructure in our state. According to Holland, Wyandotte County has the state s highest incidence of Stage 4 cancer diagnosis. It is due to the lack of screenings and the high number of uninsured residents. People may ignore the pain for awhile but they can t afford the doctor, and they have to choose between going to a doctor or putting food on their table. When they finally go their diagnosis is at Stage 4 and they are given the news they are going to die. Medicaid has expanded in New York and California, but not in Kansas. We deserve to have quality care. It is time to push for Medicaid to be expanded. I refuse to let the Wyandotte County people be left behind, he stated. Holland spoke about civic innovation and he is endorsing the concept of open data. The Unified Government airs commission meetings on several cable stations and the meetings are uploaded to the UG website. Open data is about having all the information in the Unified Government available at our fingertips. Not only for us internally but also available for the public. If it is eligible for the Freedom of Information Act, then it is public information and we should push it out. We shouldn t wait for people to ask for it, said Holland. Holland stressed the importance of data driven research to help make informed decisions when it comes to the Unified Government budget, specifically in public safety funding. Since 2006, public safety spending has averaged 34 percent increase compared to non-public safety budgets, which have risen only 1.6 percent. Balances in the Unified Government general fund have begun to stabilize. 6 6 de Marzo de 2014 I kchispanicnews.com In this column, I bring you the conclusion to the story of Sophia, a 19-year-old single mother who, in her desperation, came very close to taking her own life and the life of her unborn baby in her attempt to stop her unbearable pain. (If you missed Part 1 or Part 2, you can read it in the archives section at Volume Numbers KCHN V17 N20 and KCHN V17 N23.) By LUIS CORDOBA & KATHY JULIO Are you okay? Don t worry! Everything s going to be fine. You re going to be okay. Somewhere outside of me I could hear my mother s words slowly soothing my mind. I look down at my belly. What s happening here? What am I doing? I m thinking, Nothing s changed. I m still here seven months pregnant. I m still here without my baby s father in his life. I m still here with no way to change my situation. I m still here and my son is here with me! My whole body suddenly jerks back into reality. I can feel myself losing it again. I scream at my mom, You gotta help me! Get me somebody! Get me somebody, NOW!!! That same day my mother set me up with a therapist, Kathy Julio. The crazy thing is that I honestly can t tell you what I told her. I m sure that I laid out my problems to her. And I m pretty sure that I let her know that just a few hours earlier I wanted to kill myself. And although I can t be certain exactly what I told Kathy, I can tell you that I cried with her. And that was what I needed. A place to take out the unbearable pain I was feeling. A place to unburden myself of my sense of worthlessness. A person to push me out of my stuck place where I was trapped into thinking that death was my only answer. My shame, my guilt, my failures I didn t have to keep them inside anymore. I could give them to Kathy. That session with Kathy helped me realize that the only reason I was with this man was simply because I was scared. Scared of what my mom would think of me. Scared of what people were going to say about me. Scared of being alone. But in reality, I was already alone. In reality, I was taking care of things by myself. This man was not making me happy. In reality, he was the one bringing me more stress. When I walked out of Kathy s office that evening, I was better. And I was able to say to myself, Okay, Day Two is coming. I can do a second day. Why? Because I found a person I could cry with and say, This happened and that happened. And even though my life was still filled with big problems, I knew that I had found a place where I could flush the old shit out to make room to put the new shit in. Now, I can t say that things in my life went perfect after that first meeting with Kathy. There were still times when I would find myself in my room crying, wondering how I was going to make it another day. But Kathy was the person that kept me alive. It wasn t my mother, or my boyfriend, or even my daughter. I would call Kathy at my worst moments, my most desperate moments. And her voice, her words, her answers to my questions opened my eyes and my heart. And I realized, Who else gives me the right answers to all of my questions? Who else has shown me that life has meaning? And every single time I would be better. As if I were talking to God. That was the last time I wanted to kill myself. I still can t believe I was that close to ending it all, not only for me but for my son. To this day it still hurts when I look at him and think, How did I get to that point? How could I have done that to him? But I can also remember what I was going through at the time and how I couldn t handle it, not by myself. Now I have come to see how better off I am. Everything changed when I found out who I was, who I am and who I can be. We all need to find out who we are. The goodness of who we are. Sophia, I can feel the pain of your past but I also feel the peace of your present. To my readers: Whenever you find yourself in a place in your life where you feel that you have no way out, please turn to someone for help. This is always better than thinking that you do not belong in this world. God put us here together for a reason. We may not understand this during our desperate times of trauma and turmoil but take it from the Pachuco: God is the only one who should decide when it is time to get into your carucha (car) and drive to Heaven! En algún lugar fuera de mí, podía escuchar las palabras de mi madre calmando poco a poco mi mente. Miro hacia mi vientre. Qué está pasando aquí? Qué estoy haciendo? Estoy pensando, No ha cambiado nada. Todavía estoy aquí con siete meses de embarazo. Todavía estoy aquí, sin el padre de mi bebé en su vida. Todavía estoy aquí y no hay forma de cambiar mi situación. Yo todavía estoy aquí y mi hijo está aquí conmigo! Todo mi cuerpo de repente se sacude de vuelta a la realidad. Puedo sentir que me estoy perdiendo de nuevo. Yo le grito a mi mamá, Tienes que ayudarme! Tráeme a alguien! Tráeme a alguien!, AHORA! Ese mismo día mi madre hace una cita con una terapeuta, Kathy Julio. Lo loco es que, sinceramente, no puedo decir lo que yo le dije. Estoy segura de que le presenté mis problemas a ella. Y estoy bastante segura de que le hice saber que sólo un par de horas antes quería suicidarme. Y aunque no puedo estar segura de que fue exactamente lo que le dije a Kathy, te puedo decir que lloré con ella. Y eso era lo que necesitaba. Un lugar para sacar el insoportable dolor que estaba sintiendo. Un lugar para desahogarme de mi sentimiento de inutilidad. Una persona que me empujara fuera de mi lugar atascada en el que estaba atrapada, con el pensamiento de que la muerte era mi única respuesta. Mi vergüenza, mi culpa, mis fracasos - Ya no tenía que mantenerlos más en el interior. Yo podría dárselos a Kathy. Esa sesión con Kathy me ayudó a darme cuenta de que la única razón por la que estaba con este hombre era simplemente porque estaba asustada. Asustada de lo que mi madre pensaría de mí. Asustada de lo que la gente iba a decir de mí. Asustada de estar sola. Pero, en realidad, ya estaba sola. En realidad, yo estaba cuidando de las cosas por mí misma. Este hombre no me hacía feliz. En realidad, él era el que me traía más estrés. Cuando salí de la oficina de Kathy esa noche, yo estaba mejor. Y yo fui capaz de decirme a mí misma: Muy bien, el segundo día se acerca. Yo puedo tener un segundo día. Por qué? Porque encontré a una persona con la que podía llorar y decir, Esto y aquello pasó. Y a pesar de que mi vida aún estaba llena de grandes problemas, sabía que había encontrado un lugar en el que podía dejar la vieja mierda y hacer espacio para poner la nueva mierda dentro. Ahora, yo no puedo decir que las cosas en mi vida fueron perfectas después de ese primer encuentro con Kathy. Todavía había momentos en que me encontraba en mi habitación llorando, preguntándome cómo iba a hacerla otro día. Pero Kathy fue la persona que me mantuvo viva. No fue mi madre, ni mi novio, ni siquiera mi hija. Yo llamaba a Kathy en mis peores momentos, mis momentos más desesperados. Y su voz, sus palabras, sus respuestas a mis preguntas me abrieron los ojos y mi corazón. Y me di cuenta, Quién más me da las respuestas correctas a todas mis preguntas? Quién más me ha mostrado que la vida tiene sentido? Y cada vez yo estaba mejor. Como si estuviera hablando con Dios. Esa fue la última vez que quise suicidarme. Todavía no puedo creer que yo estuve tan cerca de acabar con todo, no sólo para mí sino para mi hijo. Hasta el día de hoy, todavía me duele cuando me miro y pienso, Cómo llegue a ese punto? Cómo le pude haber hecho eso a él? Pero también puedo recordar lo que estaba pasando en ese momento y la forma en que no podía manejarlo, no por mí misma. Ahora veo como he mejorado. Todo cambió cuando me enteré de quién era yo, quien soy y quien puedo ser. Todos tenemos que saber quiénes somos. La bondad de lo que somos. Sofía, puedo sentir el dolor de tu pasado pero también sentir la paz de tu presente. Para mis lectores: Cada vez que tú te encuentras en un lugar de tu vida donde sientes que no tienes salida, por favor, ve con alguien en busca de ayuda. Esto siempre es mejor que pensar que tú no perteneces a este mundo. Dios nos ha puesto aquí juntos por una razón. Es posible que no entendamos esto durante nuestros tiempos de desesperación de trauma y confusión, pero tómalo del Pachuco: Dios es el único que debe decidir Cuándo es hora de subirte en tu carucha y conducir al Cielo! 7 kchispanicnews.com I 6 de Marzo de 2014 Sporting KC Unveils New Look Sporting Kansas City unveiled the team s new secondary jersey for the 2014 and 2015 seasons on Tuesday during Sporting Takeoff at the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport as part of Major League Soccer s annual Jersey Week. Hundreds of Sporting KC s fans came to cheer for their favorite players. In our next issue, Hispanic News talked with the players and they say it s going to be an exciting year for both them and the fans. Nuestra Herencia Celebrates Milestone The Nuestra Herencia Advisory Council and the Kansas City Museum last fall brought together an exhibit celebrating the life and accomplishments of Lupe M. Gonzalez. It was the first effort undertaken under the museum s Nuestra Herencia initiative designed to record and present the area s Hispanic/Latino communities history and presence in the area. In recognition of that effort, the Gonzalez family awarded plaques to Christopher Leitch, former director of the Museum; Dr. Gene Chavez, curator; and Denise Morrison, interim director of the Museum. Over 1,000 persons visited The Lupe M. Gonzalez Orchestra exhibit, the second most attended exhibit at Corinthian Hall in the Old Northeast neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri. The exhibit Musica es Mi Primer Amor/Music Is My First Love included many artifacts, photos, original musical scores, original newspaper articles and recorded music.
