2 My Dear Parishioners, Holy Family Mission Blakely, Georgia (Early County) Glenmary Father John Brown, Pastor This weekend, we are having a second collection to support the Glenmary Mission. Something about our adopted mission: Holy Family Mission in Blakely, Georgia opened over 25 years ago. Glenmary Home Missioners and Father John Brown arrived in January of Father John previously served a parish in Swainsboro, Georgia, about 200 miles away. Father John also serves St. Luke mission in Randolph County as the sacramental minister. Susan Sweet is the pastoral coordinator of that Glenmary mission. Glenmary also serves nearby Miller and Clay counties, which have no Catholic churches Only 1 to 3 percent of the population in these areas is Catholic, and the poverty level is almost double the national average. (National average is about 15% of people living below the poverty level; in Early County, almost 30% of people live below the poverty level.) The main business in the area is agriculture - peanuts and cotton. When Father John arrived in Blakely, perhaps 20 people attended Mass. Today, about people attend the English language Mass, and about attend the Spanish language Mass. There were no religious education classes, no first Communion classes and little community presence before Glenmary s arrival. Father John immediately went about establishing religious education classes and, for the past two summers, a Vacation Bible School was organized, with many children and adults participating. Many parishioners had never experienced Holy Week services and were eager to learn more. Much education went into Lenten soup supper meetings so that parishioners could prepare for Holy Week. These suppers also served as community building events. Holy Family now has established RCIA classes as well. Father John has also been busy reaching out to the community, urging parishioners to participate in food and clothing pantries and a thrift shop. The church community is also being encouraged to evangelize and reach out to the larger community. Father John says that he cannot grow the church by himself! Father John has also reached out to neighboring churches, has written well received articles for the local newspaper, and is the Rotary Club chaplain. Part of Glenmary s charism is ministering to all residents of the counties we serve, not just our parishioners. Father John visits and supports the local migrant workers, assisting them with both spiritual and material needs. He challenges his parishioners to bring Christ to others as well. You will be divided into groups of six, to meet once a month, Sep, Oct and Nov. There are no requirements for the group, other than a desire to share good food and fellowship. In teams of two to three, EDGE Core members lead small group discussions and activities at THE EDGE. Core team members are integral to Life Teen. Core members are involved in many ways such as leading small group, setup of environments, session planning, and food set-up/serving. We cannot have the two programs without YOU!!! Please prayerfully discern how you can minister to our teens and lead them closer to Christ. PARENTS: Please note the change of time and day for students in grades All students who are in these grades are invited and encouraged to come experience EDGE and Life Teen. We are excited about this new program and think your kids will be too just give us a chance to show you what it s all about! For more information go to the web site and check it out. All catechists, and any interested in growing their faith, are invited to attend the Archdiocesan Faith Formation Day on Aug 15 at COKAS. Our keynote speaker is Patrice Spirou from the Religious Education Office for the Diocese. There are 3 workshop choices for the morning session and 3 choices for the afternoon session. Lunch will be served. The day will begin with Mass in celebration of the Feast of the Assumption at 9:00 am and will conclude at 3:00 p.m. Please note: this is our training day for all who wish to assist with Children s Liturgy of the Word. All participants must pre-register and will receive a certificate from each chosen workshop that will go toward catechist certification. 7 Holy Family Mission Blakely, Georgia (Early County) Padre Glenmary John Brown, Pastor Mis Queridos feligreses, Este fin de semana, estamos teniendo una segunda colecta para apoyar la Misión de los Glenmary. Algo sobre nuestra misión adoptada: La misión de Holy Family está en Blakely, Georgia abrió sus puertas hace más de 25 años. La persona tendra que estar dispuesta a completer un entrenamiento para los voluntarios de First Call Pregnancy Center.
