Perkins, Assistant Superintendent School Operations Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana, Ph.D. Chief Executive Officer All Administrators All Employees DATE: April 8, 2015 PURPOSE: MAJOR CHANGES: INSTRUCTIONS: The Los Angeles Unified School District recognizes Thursday, April 23, 2015 as the national day for schools and communities to work together to create meaningful interactions for students between the ages of eight through eighteen years. Designed to be more than a career day, the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day program goes beyond mere shadowing of an adult. By sharing how they spend their workdays, parents, guardians, and mentors can exemplify the value of education and a balanced work and family life, and inspire youth in setting their academic and career goals. Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day builds partnerships that educate and empower youth and adults toward personal and collective achievement. This Memorandum replaces MEM , Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, dated March 28, The requirements for approved absences related to participation in Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day have been clarified. 1. #MPOWER: Knowledge+Choice=Strength is the 2015 theme for Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. In 2015, Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Foundation reflects on its years of experience, education and empowering youth of America. Since 1993, the spirit of those first involved in the first seminal celebration of the Day have been with its organizers and participants alike in their tireless work to envision creative and groundbreaking ways to engage the youth of America in the realization of their hopes and dreams. Teachers and employees are encouraged to use the theme as a guide for the day and to consider aligning the theme to service learning projects and community service. When the commemoration of an event conflicts with scheduled school activities (such as during the testing period), schools may opt to honor the event on an alternate date. The theme is open to a broad array of interpretations that range from partnerships within a classroom, school, community, city, state, country and the world. By implementing this year s theme, youth can begin to think critically, engage in discussion and debate, and conduct academic research on the impact of past and future partnerships to educate and empower. 2 2. The Sample Parent/Guardian Cover Letter from Schools (Attachments A and B) is provided for your convenience. School staff are asked to permit students to participate in this event, provided it does not conflict with scheduled school activities (such as during testing period). In the event of a scheduling conflict, schools may select an alternate day to participate. In that case, the school should adjust the required School Notification of Participation and Parent Responsibility Form dates. 3. Parents who wish to have their child participate in Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day are required to notify the school of attendance by returning the School Notification of Participation and Parent Responsibility Form (Attachment C and D) by Friday, April 17, District employees who wish to bring their school-aged child to an LAUSD work site must secure permission from their site administrator (Attachment E, Request to Bring My Daughter or Son to Work) by Friday, April 17, Children must be appropriately supervised and may not pose a significant disruption to the work environment. Each department has discretion in whether to allow children on the work site on Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. Supervisors must consider safety and logistical factors such as the employee s job duties, the feasibility and appropriateness of the site to host children, and the number of children that can be accommodated. 5. The absence is to be reported as a principal-approved (code A-5) if the parent request is submitted by April 17. Students who participate in Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day are expected to make up any missed assignments. A student s absence due to preapproved participation in Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day should not adversely affect the student s eligibility for any attendance awards. If you are planning to participate in the event with your daughter, son or relative, please complete the School Notification and Parent Responsibility Letter (Attachment C or D) and return to your child s school by Friday, April 17, Please be aware that students are expected to make up missed assignments. Your child s participation will be recorded as an excused absence if a completed School Notification of Participation and Parent Responsibility Form is submitted to the school by April 17.
