2 Course Description: Within this course students will practice individual skills for composition in Spanish and review linguistic contents through the study of selected original literary texts. Students will improve their reading comprehension and writing skills, as well as develop advanced-level speaking abilities and practice all their acquired knowledge in previous lower level classes. A través de este curso los estudiantes practicarán sus habilidades individuales de composición en español y revisaran contenidos lingüísticos a través de la lectura de textos literarios originales. Los estudiantes mejoraran sus destrezas de comprensión lectora y expresión escrita, al mismo tiempo que desarrollaran capacidades de expresión oral de nivel avanzado y practicarán lo aprendido en los cursos anteriores. Requirements: Students are required to have completed the Spanish language courses up to Spa 231. Course Objectives: You will improve your linguistic competence in Spanish (grammar, vocabulary, orthography). You will improve your reading and writing skills, as well as your ability to interact orally with other people in Spanish in a variety of registers, types of text and genres. You will develop critical thinking abilities. Mejorarás tu competencia lingüística en español (gramática, vocabulario, ortografía). Mejorarás tus destrezas de lectura y escritura, así como tu habilidad de interactuar oralmente con otras personas en español en una variedad de registros, tipos y géneros textuales. Desarrollarás tu habilidad de pensamiento crítico. Student Learning Outcomes: You will demonstrate the ability to develop a well-organized essay in Spanish (500 to 800 words, divided in clearly-defined sections: introduction, body, and conclusion). Demostrarás la capacidad de producir un ensayo bien estructurado en español ( palabras, dividido en secciones: introducción, cuerpo y conclusión). Response papers /Ensayosrespuesta (30%) During the course you will be exposed to different literary texts in Spanish, and will have to write a response paper to each one of them. You will hand in to your instructor both the first draft and the final version. The first draft will be written in class with the possibility of referring to the course book and paper dictionaries. The instructor will then correct the first draft and give it back to you with editing codes to help you correct and improve your writing. The final version will be handed in to the instructor together with the first draft. Final version characteristics: Times New Roman 12, double-spaced, with an appropriate heading in the top left corner that includes your name, course number and section, instructor s name, date, and original literary work title. The essay title is to be centered on the page. The topic will be provided by the instructor. One of the

3 essays will be a comparison between two of the films showed in our Hispanic Film Showcase during the semester. Important:essays turned in after the specified date in the Programa de Clases will be discounted a 20%. A lo largo del curso leerás diferentes textos literarios en español y tendrás que escribir un ensayo respuesta para cada uno de ellos. Tendrás que entregar a tu profesor el borrador y la versión final de cada ensayo respuesta. El borrador se escribirá en clase, con la posibilidad de recurrir al libro de texto o a diccionarios impresos. Luego, el profesor corregirá el borrador y lo devolverá con unos códigos y comentarios que te ayudaran a corregir y mejorar tu trabajo. La versión final se entregará al profesor junto al borrador. Características de la versión final: fuente Times New Roman 12, doble espacio, con un encabezado en la esquina superior izquierda que incluya tu nombre, el nombre y código del curso, el nombre del profesor, la fecha y el nombre de la obra literaria original. El titulo tendrá que estar centrado. El tema para cada ensayo lo dará el profesor. Uno de los ensayos será una comparación de dos películas entre las propuestas por el Hispanic Film Showcase a lo largo del semestre. Importante: los ensayos que se entreguen después de la fecha especificada en el programa de clases se penalizarán con un -20%. Final paper / Ensayo final (20%) It should focus on two or more literary texts read through the semester, songs, poems, pictures, etc. that inspire you. It is an open topic composition where you may evaluate stories that share similar themes, story lines, characters, or you may compare characters personalities, or narrative structures. It should be between 500 and 800words, font Times New Roman 12, double-spaced. Make sure to discuss with the instructor the topic before and during the development of your work. Important: final essay turned in after the date specified in the Programa de Clases will receive a grade of zero. Debería centrarse en dos o más textos literarios leídos a lo largo del semestre, en canciones, poemas, cuadros u otros elementos artísticos que te inspiren. Es una composición libre, en la que puedes decidir valuar historias que comparten temas, personajes o tramas, o comparar la personalidad de los personajes o la estructura narrativa. Tiene que tener una extensión de entre 500 y 800 palabras, Times New Roman 12, doble espacio. Es importante que cada estudiante concuerde con el instructor el tema del ensayo antes de empezar, y consulte al profesor cualquier duda a lo largo del desarrollo del trabajo. Importante: los ensayos que se entreguen después de la fecha especificada en el programa de clases recibirán un cero. Quizzes / Test (20%) There will be a quiz on each reading. They are to be taken the next day you have been assigned the readings as indicated in the syllabus. There are no make-ups forquizzes. Hay un test para cadalectura. El test se ha de hacer el día siguiente a la lectura del texto, como estáespecificado en el programa del curso. Los test no se pueden repetir. Presentation / Presentación (10%) Each student will make a 10 minutes presentation on one reading. The presentation is not to be read. Its content will consist on an answer to the following questions: a) what is the story about; b) what happens in this story; c) who are the characters; d) interpretation and original ideas.

4 Cada estudiante llevará a cabo una presentación de 10 minutos acerca de un texto literario del curso. La presentación no se puede leer. El contenido de la presentación tendrá que incluir: a) de qué trata el texto; b) qué ocurre en la historia; c) quiénes son los personajes; d) interpretación e ideas originales. Tutor Interviews / Entrevistas con el tutor (10%) Two interviews are to be held with any of the departmental tutors during the semester. Students must visit the tutors intwo occasions: 1) to practice the class presentation with the tutor, and 2) to consult with the tutors the ideas and contents of the ensayo final. For the class presentation, the student will have it prepared in advance and just deliver it to the tutor. For the consultation, students should already have their outline prepared for the tutor to review. Tutors will have signup sheets for students to set up an appointment for each one of the interviews. Likewise, they are required to sign in to attend the meetings with the tutor. Tutors office is HL 119. Cada estudiante tendrá dos entrevistas con un tutor de español del departamento. Los estudiantes tienen que ir a ver al tutor en dos ocasiones: 1) para practicar la presentación oral, 2) para consultar con el tutor acerca de las ideas y contenidos del ensayo final. Para la presentación, el estudiante tendrá que tenerla ya preparada y simplemente la expondrá al tutor. Para el ensayo final, el estudiante tendrá un esquema y un primer borrador listos para que el tutor los pueda revisar. En la puerta del despacho del tutor (HL119) hay unas hojas a disposición del estudiante para concertar una cita. Además, cada estudiante tendrá que firmar un registro después de cada reunión con el tutor. Participation / Participación (10%) You will be responsible for: - attend classes on a regular basis and engage in all the activities. - reading the assigned materials and be ready to participate in the class and online discussions. - hand in ON TIME all the assignments (late works will only be accepted in case of real emergencies). - contribute to online discussions on a regular basis. COURSE AND UNIVERSITY PROCEDURES/POLICIES Course Specific Procedures: Academic Honesty Policy Texas A&M University-Commerce does not tolerate plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty. Conduct that violates generally-accepted standards of academic honesty is defined as academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, plagiarism (the appropriation or stealing of the ideas or words of another person and passing them off as one s own), cheating on exams or other course assignments, collusion (the unauthorized collaboration with others in preparing course assignments), and abuse (destruction, defacing, or removal) of resource material. Instructors uphold and support the highest academic standards, and students are expected to do likewise. Penalties for students guilty of academic dishonesty include disciplinary probation, suspension and expulsion (Texas A&M University-Commerce Code of Student Conduct 5.b[1, 2, 3]). Cheating, including plagiarizing papers in whole or part, will result in a grade of zero (0) on the assignment for the first offense and failure of the course for any subsequent offenses. More details regarding academic honesty: Any student who commits plagiarism or violates any other tenet of academic honesty will receive a grade of zero for the first offense; a second violation will result in automatic failure of the course. Upon any infraction of academic honesty, I will provide the student with written notice of the infraction, will require a face-to-face meeting in my office to discuss the matter, and I will also notify the dean of the student s college. Attendance Policy Because your active participation in discussions is expected, attendance is vital for success in this course. Attendance requires more than simply logging on to the course site, and you should begin engaging in discussions each week. Your presence in class is imperative. In order to be able to participate in class, you must be present! Roll will be taken every day, and attendance is mandatory. If you are absent more than two times, for each absence beyond the two allowed your final grade will be lowered by 1% up to a maximum of 10%. After the sixth absence, you may be dropped from the course. Absences due to illness or unexpected situations count as absences. The only absences that do not count beyond the two allowed are those resulting from required participation in university events, hospitalization, or family emergencies of which your instructor has been notified by university officials. A tardy or leaving class early equals 1/3 of an absence. E-Culture Policy: When dealing with faculty over , it is important that students keep the following in mind:

6 1. Always use the Tamu-c account to communicate with your instructor. Messages from any other accounts will not be considered. 2. Always use salutations and signatures. Be courteous. 3. For serious matters use s to facilitate a mutually agreeable time to meet. should not be used to avoid personal interaction. 4. Never use to vent or to respond immediately to an emotional situation. Assignment Policy I will provide specific details during class meetings and possibly by .students must stay current with all readings, including the course lectures and discussions. Students must complete and submit all assignments by their respective due dates. Late Work I will not accept any assignment after its due date. Assignments submitted after the due date may receive a score of zero (0). Drop a Course A student may drop a course by logging into his/her myleo account and clicking on the hyperlink labeled Drop a class from among the choices found under the myleo section of the Web page. Incompletes Incompletes (grade of X ) are granted only under rare and extraordinary circumstances. Administrative Withdrawal I reserve the right to drop a student from the course administratively for excessive absences or violations of student conduct codes. 7 Class-Specific Notes on Student Conduct: I expect all students to treat all members of the class community with respect, including respect to differences of opinion, cultural background, and other matters. Although I encourage students to debate issues, it is important to note that there are effective and logical ways of conducting such debates. Tutoring and Advising: Your Professor: I am your first resource and want to make your experience as positive as possible. Please talk to me if you are having any problems in the course and I will do my best to assist you. Tutor: Tutoring is available in the Tutor s office. Tutorials are free of charge and are offered daily. Sign up and hours is on the door. Mach III: If you are a 1st generation college student; or if you are in the federal category qualified as low-income; or if you have any type of disability, you may qualify for free tutoring at Mach III. Notice to those seeking Teacher Certification: Students who plan to teach English, Spanish, or English as a Second Language in Texas public schools must pass the appropriate state certification tests. Placement Exam: If you have taken any Spanish in the past, or if you speak Spanish, you should take the Spanish placement exam. It is offered by the Office of Student Assessment & Evaluation at The One Stop Shop on 2200 Campbell St., Commerce, TX You may call at to schedule an appointment or get more information. You may possibly place out of lower-division classes and receive up to 6 hours of credit! This exam is to help you finish your language requirement sooner, or get you into upper-level classes without repeating work you have already done in the past. Study Abroad: We encourage students to pursue an immersion experience in Spanish by participating in our study abroad programs. Anytime you receive credit for courses taken abroad, you must have them approved by the Spanish faculty and advisor BEFORE you leave. Please speak to your professor if you are interested in taking Spanish in Spain or Mexico. As a bilingual student, you can benefit enormously from a study-abroad experience. Financial aid will apply to most destinations and the Office of International Studies offers travel stipends for almost all interested students to travel to a variety of countries.
