2 Minimum qualifications for acceptance A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 85 (grades are not rounded off) during the previous two years in English, math, science and social studies. Must meet minimum requirements on the seventh grade State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR). If a student has not been in a Texas public school, students must score above the 50 percentile in each of the following subjects: writing, reading, and math on a 7th grade standardized test. If the applicant is not required to take the STAAR test, or does not have one of the above mentioned tests, it is the student s responsibility to contact the El Paso ISD Testing Center to make testing arrangements. Student must be in compliance with the state attendance policy. Student must reside within the El Paso ISD attendance zone. Transportation will be provided for students attending a magnet school outside their attendance zone. Applications will be accepted from January 20 through 31, If 7th grade assessment scores and grades for the 7th grade and fall 8th grade meet the minimum standards, students will receive a conditional acceptance pending the final 8th grade grades. Students in an EPISD middle school will not need to submit their final 8th grade report card. All other conditionally accepted students must submit final 8th grade report card no later than June 10, Please note: It is the student s responsibility to obtain and submit the documentation required. Students who do not submit their paperwork on time will lose their slot. If more than 120 students meet the requirements for acceptance, students will be ranked by their overall 7th/8th grade cumulative GPA in English, math, science and social studies. Based on GPA, each student will be ranked from the highest to the lowest and the top 120 students will be accepted. All other applicants will be placed on a waiting list (in rank order). Due to course prerequisites, only students entering the 9th or 10th grade can apply to the program. 3 Student and Parent Commitment We understand that students apply to the Pre-Engineering Magnet Program at Chapin High School as an optional program because of the unique focus of the program. We recognize that acceptance to the Magnet Program is a privilege and not a right. We recognize that standards in the Magnet Program may be higher than those required by other schools in the District. We recognize that compliance with those standards is a requisite of continued enrollment in the Magnet Program. We understand that acceptable conduct, academic progress, and regular attendance are mandatory for continued enrollment in the Chapin Pre-Engineering Magnet Program. We agree to abide by all El Paso ISD policies, including discipline, attendance, and grade policies. Students who do not maintain academic standards will be subject to a probationary period before being exited from the Magnet Program and returned to their home campuses. A student who fails any math, science or engineering course for the semester will be placed on probation. Should the student on probation fail any math, science or engineering course the following semester he/she will be exited from the program and will return to his/her home campus. We understand that admission to the Magnet Program is competitive and limited. Students are admitted to the Magnet Program without regard to race, color, national origin, gender or handicap. Rules of the University Interscholastic League as Pertaining to Sports As outlined in Section 440(B) (2) (B) of the University of Interscholastic League Constitution and Contest Rules: Students are eligible in athletics the first year they have the opportunity to transfer to a Magnet School. If a student leaves the Magnet School and returns to the school of his/her parent s residence, the student is not eligible for varsity athletic competitions for at least one year from the date of enrollment in the home school. In order to receive college credit from RIT, a student must qualify for the credit and pay the tuition for each qualifying course. The college credit can be used for a DAP measure only if the student qualifies and pays the tuition. Students will choose one of five pathways. Pathways are 1) Bio Medical/ Bio Technical Engineering, 2) Civil Engineering & Architecture, 3) Computer Science & Engineering, 4) Electrical Engineering & Electronics and 5) Mechanical & Industrial Engineering. Request a PTR from the school that you want your child to attend. Fill out the PTR completely and return to the Principal for review. Please review the procedures outlined on this form.
