6 THE HOUSING AUTHORITY OF THE COUNTY OF KERN 2015 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Purpose & General Eligibility The purpose of the Housing Authority of the County of Kern s Scholarship Awards Program is to motivate Housing Authority residents and Section 8 participants to continue their education & to provide assistance for the cost of books, supplies, & tuition. At least $5,000 in scholarships will be awarded ranging from $250 to $1,000. Housing Authority residents and Section 8 participants of any age may apply. Applicants do not have to be U.S. citizens. To qualify for a scholarship, individuals must: Funding Reside in a development managed by the Housing Authority of the County of Kern or be a participant of the Section 8 program Be accepted for attendance at a college, technical/trade school or already be attending college, technical/trade school Submit a written application, with 2 letters of recommendation & transcripts to Maria Mendoza by Thursday, April 2, 2015, (Housing Authority of the County of Kern, th St., Bakersfield, CA 93301) or Fax to: The Scholarship Awards Program is funded by discretionary monies of the Housing Authority of the County of Kern and a portion is funded by the non-profit organization Housing & Opportunity Foundation of Kern. Donations from community members are also accepted. Selection Criteria Selection of Scholarship Program winners will be based on the quality of written applications, 2 letters of recommendation, and high school and/or official college, technical/trade school transcripts. In rating the applications, the following criteria will be considered for each student: Commitment and career goal of the applicant Community service (particularly service towards improving housing needs in their community) Scholastic record Extra-curricular activities Financial need A point system will be used to rate applications.

7 Housing Authority 2015 Scholarship Procedures 1. Information about Housing Authority scholarships will be made available to Housing Authority residents and Section 8 participants in January of each year. There is up to $5,000 in scholarship awards ranging from $250- $1,000. Residents of any age can apply. 2. Applications and required supporting documentation (letters of recommendation and transcripts) must be postmarked no later than Thursday, April 2, 2015 to: Maria Mendoza, Administrative Secretary Housing Authority of County of Kern th Street Bakersfield, CA mmendoza@kernah.org FAX: (661) The scholarship award winners will be notified in May 2015 and later presented with award certificates at a Housing Authority Board Meeting in June Please note: Scholarship winners will be required to submit proof of summer or fall enrollment (class schedule may be faxed to: ) in a college or trade/technical school in order to receive an award check. 5. Housing Authority scholarships applicants & winners may re-apply for scholarships in subsequent years.

8 NOTICE TO HOUSING AUTHORITY TENANTS/ SECTION 8 PARTICIPANTS 17 th Annual Housing Authority 2015 Scholarship Awards Program The Housing Authority of the County of Kern will be awarding up to $5,000 in scholarship awards ranging from $250 -$1,000 to worthy students of any age that are Housing Authority residents or Section 8 participants. These scholarships may be used, at the discretion of the award winners, for college, technical/trade school expenses for books, tuition fees, transportation, etc. To be eligible to receive scholarship funding, students must show proof of acceptance from a college, technical/trade school or be currently enrolled in a college, technical/trade school and must obtain a Housing Authority scholarship application. Once the application is completed, it must be submitted to the Housing Authority by Thursday, April 2, 2015, by either mail, fax ( ), or via mmendoza@kernha.org. 9 AVISO A LOS RESIDENTES/PARTICIPANTES DEL PROGRAMA SECCION 8 17º Programa Anual de Becas 2015 De La Autoridad de Vivienda La Autoridad de Vivienda del Condado de Kern estará otorgando hasta $5,000 en becas escolares comenzando de $250 a $1,000 a estudiantes dignos que viven en viviendas manejadas por la Autoridad de vivienda o a participantes del Programa Sección 8. Estas becas se pueden utilizar, según el criterio de los ganadores de los premios, para gastos de colegio/ escuela vocacional, para libros, gastos de matrícula, transportación, etc. Para ser elegible y recibir una beca los estudiantes deben mostrar prueba de aceptación de un colegio/escuela vocacional o estar actualmente inscrito en el colegio/escuela vocacional y deben obtener una aplicación de su gerente de viviendas.
