1 RICHMOND TODAY MAY 2014 A CHEVRON RICHMOND PUBLICATION Chevron Invests $6.5 Million in Richmond BY ANDREA BAILEY Chevron Richmond is committed to investing in Richmond and West County and partnering with this community to support the local organizations and nonprofits that work tirelessly to make our community a better place to live and work. Since 2009, Chevron Richmond has invested more than $580 million locally creating jobs, helping local businesses and nonprofits and paying taxes that fund essential services such as schools and public safety. In 2013, Chevron Richmond contributed more than $6.5 million to improve our schools, create jobs and provide opportunities for youth. These contributions directly impacted more than 1,600 students in Richmond schools, including 80% from low-income families. We also provided more than $215,000 to grow small, women-owned businesses. I m proud of the community partners we supported in 2013, and I look forward to continue working with the organizations that are making a difference. 3 Community Giving Spotlight THE EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM BY KAREEM WEAVER New Leader s Emerging Leaders Program helps train teachers to become effective leaders and create great schools. Chevron Richmond s support last year helped us provide leadership training for 16 teachers in the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD), where teachers learned to manage teams and lead data-driven meetings with student achievement in mind. This training made a measurable difference for the 1,600 Richmond students who benefited. Proficiency in participating math and science classrooms increased by more than 11% while an average of 13% of students who once tested as below proficient are now excelling. We re excited to continue partnering with Chevron and helping WCCUSD students succeed. Kareem Weaver is the executive director of New Leaders. EL PROGRAMA DE LÍDERES EMERGENTES POR KAREEM WEAVER El Programa de líderes emergentes New Leaders ayuda a capacitar a los maestros para ser líderes efectivos y crear excelentes escuelas. El apoyo de Chevron Richmond del pasado año nos ayudó a ofrecer capacitación de liderazgo a 16 maestros del Distrito Escolar Unificado de West Contra Costa (WCCUSD), a través de la cual los maestros aprendieron a administrar equipos y dirigir reuniones para generar datos teniendo en mente el desempeño de los estudiantes. Con esta capacitación se logró un gran cambio para los 1,600 estudiantes de Richmond que se beneficiaron. De ellos, sus habilidades en matemáticas y ciencias aumentaron más del 11%, mientras que un promedio de 13% de los estudiantes superaron el nivel por debajo de las habilidades requeridas. Nos entusiasma continuar colaborando con Chevron y ayudar a que los estudiantes de WCCUSD triunfen. GOMPERS HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH DEVELOPMENT COLLABORATION BY CRYSTAL A. JOHNSON, PH.D. Many young people in Richmond face challenging life circumstances that make it difficult to perform well in school. Chevron Richmond s generous support last year made it possible for the Gompers High School Youth Development Collaboration to provide young people with the support they need to overcome the traumatic impact of community violence, and the skills to make positive life decisions for brighter futures. A joint program of the Wright Institute and Bay Area Peacekeepers, the Collaboration combines mental health services, life skills training, conflict mediation and teacher support, resulting in a measurably safer and more positive learning environment in one of Richmond s most challenged schools. 4 RICHMOND S CINCO DE MAYO FESTIVAL BY ROSA LARA Every year, more than 100,000 people gather in Richmond to celebrate the Cinco de Mayo Festival. This family-friendly event, organized by the 23rd Street Merchants Association, has become one of the biggest Cinco de Mayo events in Northern California thanks to support from sponsors like Chevron Richmond. The festival includes three stages of internationally and locally recognized live music and performance groups, great food, a horse rodeo, a classic car showcase, public safety demonstrations, activities for kids, and many community organizations engaging with community members on important topics, including voter registration, job training and more. It s a great opportunity for the entire community to celebrate and enjoy Mexico s rich heritage, history, culture and of course, tasty food. FESTIVAL DEL CINCO DE MAYO DE RICHMOND POR ROSA LARA Cada año más de 100,000 personas se reúnen en Richmond para disfrutar del festival del Cinco de Mayo. Este evento familiar, organizado por la Asociación de Comerciantes de la Calle 23, se ha convertido en uno de los más grandes eventos del Cinco de Mayo en el norte de California gracias al apoyo de patrocinadores como Chevron Richmond. WOMEN S INITIATIVE FOR SELF-EMPLOYMENT BY DANIELLE FRANKLIN Chevron Richmond once again stepped up to play an important role in our work to fight poverty in Richmond. The Women s Initiative for Self-Employment improves the lives of lowincome women in the East Bay by providing micro loans and small business training to create small businesses and local jobs. Chevron Richmond s 2013 investment enabled us to provide entrepreneurial readiness workshops, business training, networking events and more to almost 40 budding female entrepreneurs in Richmond. More than 70% of our program s graduates become successfully self-employed within three years, and many of last year s graduates have already started applying the new skills they learned from the program to their new businesses. The program s $5 million local investment has made a huge impact in the community. Last year, the program funded a groundbreaking project in North Richmond called the Family Sustainability Project, which includes the Breathmobile and works in local schools to help children address and treat respiratory illness. The roving Breathmobile provides proper medical care and partners with the Community Energy Services Corporation to work with families to eliminate asthma triggers at home such as dust and mold. Studies show that similar programs have reduced hospitalizations for children by as much as 80%, making it possible to perform better in school. We are proud of our commitment to invest in programs like the Breathmobile and to improve the quality of life in Richmond and West County by supporting opportunities for youth, education and economic development. INGREDIENTS 4 cups corn 1 diced red pepper 1 diced tomato 1 diced avocado 1 bunch chopped cilantro 1 finely chopped serrano chili 2-3 cloves garlic, chopped 2 Tbsp fresh lime juice 1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 1 tsp salt, more to taste Cracked black pepper to taste INSTRUCTIONS Soak the raw corn in some hot water for a few minutes and then drain.
